I agree that Kai is better than his 60% but he has to get healthy, we have to get better, and Sav needs to go.

Agreed GK, Sav needs to go. I would continue on with Kai for now as well. Shanahan has shown he can and would show a kicker the door but he is much to loyal to other veterans who are not earning their pay check. Our ST has been very poor and I cannot understand how a unit as a whole who plays so poorly can keep their coach who appears to be WAY in over his head.

Our STs is a joke and will be an anchor dragging us down for the rest of the season, and huge reason is coaching. How the hell do you kick to Hester?

also, how can we not have anyone that can return a kickoff or a punt? We would be better off, by far, just downing every kickoff and taking the ball on the 20. Of course, our opponents would be fools to kick the ball into the end zone on kick offs. We need some serious help in both kick coverage and kick returning. At least we didn't have any stupid penalties on STs this game (that I can remember).

Kai is a great kicker. our ST's sucks tho.

I agree on FGs but not so sure on kickoffs. I didn't pay attn - was it windy yesterday & that was why he could not kick it out of endzone? If not - they should see if the next punter can perform double duty or even have an extra guy for kickoffs (realize it eats up a spot). Towards the end they were getting cute with squib kicks, etc - kind of ridiculous (unless again wind was a factor).

Somebody needs to figure this out quickly (even if it involves drastic measures). It is one thing for special teams to not perform. However - it is unacceptable to allow the special teams to actually lose a game which is currently either happening or coming close to occurring way too often.

The problem is not Rocca it is the coverage. The punt to Hester was to the sideline where you want it to be and our coverage let him get to the other side. His net punt average is low because of this. He is good at putting it inside the 20 and not giving up TB. We just need to have better coverage and he will be fine.

Our return game on the other hand needs some work. We just need to Down the kick offs and Let Moss and Morgan return the punts. They are not a big go to on the offense now so we could use their skills and knowledge to help get better field position.

The problem is both. Rocca has lost leg strength. He also has not be very good at directional kicking this year. He has shanked more punts than I have ever seen him do. I will give you that the punt Hester returned for a TD was a good punt. He was trapped against the far sideline and came back across the field where they had a perfect line set up. It was actually a beautiful think to watch from the stands, unfortunately as a Skins fan, it was also painful.....again.

Rocca is definitely part of the problem. Go back to my original post. He is ranked 33rd in average punt distance...that means a backup kicks the ball further typically and every starter in the league.

As for Kai's kickoffs, I'd rather him kick the ball around the 20 and tackle the upguy at the 25 than give the other team any chance for a return against our coverage units.

Anyone miss Graham Gano?

10/10 field goals with 3 over 50+ yards, and 20/20 pats...

I think somebody always supported Gano. It was me. I also stated that our OL was a part of the problem.

I also think we need to continue giving Forbath our support. He is very good but was injured...don't repeat mistakes of the past.

the bears didnt recover a legal onside kick

however our teams have botched every play you can have on special teams

also didnt i hear once or twice how kick returning didnt matter ? that was the argument against keeping banks .
we certainly need youth at the punter position and we need a difference maker for PR

Gano was perfect again today with 2 field goals one at 55 yards, and 4/4 extra points...Are we snake bit by letting kickers go early in their careers or what?

Yes we are. Kickers that we have let go follow:

David Akers
Nick Novak
Shaun Suisam
Graham Gano

It s because we don't recognize that kickers need to mature. Rarely does a young kicker succeed. Many of the best kickers in the game bounced around the league a few times until they perfected their craft. We need patience on kickers. If they show promise, we need to let them work thru the growing pains. IMO, Forbath has shown some promise. He is the least of our problems on STs right now.

I was a Gano fan, and wished the organization would have shown patience, like other positions on this team. Sometimes it takes a little while, but this kid has talent...He was also a great punter in college, and maybe with Rocca's struggles we could have used him in both, and had an extra spot on the roster.

Not really. These are things that can be fixed with the right ST coach, with the right eye for evaluating talent. Skins, ST's rankings over the last 5 seasons...

Not good. Time to take a long look at doing whatever it takes to get the right ST coach for the job!

Danny Smith has a very good name around the league. I say it's the players and will eventually straighten itself out if we keep going young.

I was a Gano fan as well and showed many times where the blocks were 3 and 4 yards in our backfield. Then again, I'm a Forbath fan as well. I'd say patience.
