Is it necessarily a mistake to draft QB 1st?

I think that most people draft a RB or a WR first. I've played the past two years and drafted Aaron Rodgers with my first pick and my teams have both been around .500. So, is it necessarily a mistake to go QB in the first round?

If 500 got you to the playoffs, than no. If not, than yes. Besides..makes more of a difference with how you built everything else than it does whether you took Rodgers 1st or not

Last year yes!!! 2 years ago no!!! But real answer is that it depends on the league. In a 2 QB league u should always pick a qb first unless u can get top 2 RB late in the first round. And in very shallow leagues, if a td is 6 points you may want to pick a qb in the first round. But in a normal 12 + team league I would not do it with the first 8-10 picks.

Last year I picked Aaron Rodgers 1st (4th overall). It was the first time I picked a QB first since Kurt Warner way back with the Rams. I made it to the semis, but lost (as many know I benched Decker @ Baltimore for Roddy White vs the Giants, when Roddy didn't practice all week). Anyway, I had the most points, and "would" have beaten anyone the following week (championship). So is it a mistake? It depends, but I would lean toward yes almost always, just because of the depth at QB.... but there's always a point of value in regards to selecting one, and it's always different from owner to owner.

drafting Peterson in the 2nd and "hand-cuffing" Fred Jackson with Spiller in the 7th kind of helped my team too! :)

This year I say yes, QB very very deep, RB very shallow so I'm going RB and then RB/WR depending on draft position, I can still get a very good QB (Ryan, Brady, RGIII, Luck, Wilson, etc) in the 4th and 5th round where I won't be able to pick up a decent RB

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders.

I don't think there is completely a wrong way or right way to draft. Everyone has their own strategy. Sometimes it is good to follow the consensus of the cheat sheets and adjust for your personal preferences. Sometimes the draft itself dictates a change in strategy.

As Milk pointed out, depends on the league. (Or the scoring.)

Of course, now that I say that, there are things I rarely do - and one of those rare things is drafting a QB in the first round.

Taking a top notch QB first is often a "safe" way to go, but it can also limit the overall upside to your team because you can still get a really good QB in round 5 in most formats. If your goal is to finish .500, then drafting Rogers or Brees in the first round may help you do just that.

As a disclaimer though, you don't want to wait too long. I made that mistake in my first draft today. I picked 12th out of 12. When the 5th round selection got to me, Russell Wilson was still on the board and all 11 other teams had QBs already. I gambled and decided to wait to draft him until rounds 7&8. Naturally, he was selected 1 pick before me in round 7, so I waited some more. Now my roster looks pretty good aside from QB, but Vick looks like my week 1 starter. :gaah:
