heres the thing like rp said DONT PANIC and go out and just sign names to sign names that will put this team in a bigger hole. to save from having even more egg on their faces the devils CANT miss the playoffs next season to do so would be devastating to the everyone.

as for why now?

well lou even stated in his comments about this that hes been talking to kovy about this since the lockout ended.

MY THINKING is that he did this now and not before the the draft or ufa.
#1 UFAs wouldnt want to come here
#2 it would give the devils less leverage to lure UFAs here
#3 and the biggest like tg stated before all this went down. the devils were at a 90% renewal for season tickets. you think if they broke this story at the start of the summer that would still be at 90%? i would've laughed them off the phone if they tried to pitch me tickets after kovy left.

i really wished he would've just stuck it out for one more year so we could've got away from the draft pick penalty but that is on lou he should've gave up that #29 when he had the chance

unless they bring in someone legit there is noway this current roster makes the playoffs or even sniffs it.

we all saw what the offense did with no kovalchuk last year 10 game losing streak! what do you think would happen now? thought shootouts were bad last year? i doubt we win more then 3 this year!

Wow, I really cant believe this, so much running through my head

Kovy is GONE. This franchise has never made a move in trading for a top ten player when they did years ago and then signing him to that massive contract. He became the foundation of this entire organization after that. This was his team and he was the player management would always build around. You left Parise hanging for this guy and he FUCKING RETIRES IN HIS PRIME

Stunned is an understatement. This sets the whole organization backwards big time.

The only positive that comes from this is the amount of cap space we now have going forward.

However, if we cant re-coup that first round draft pick penalty and also sign a few big free agents next year with the extra money, this organization will find itself in a big hole that will take years to climb out of.

I really hope management does not panic and goes out and wastes this money. I'm dreading that.

Best case scenario is to sit tight right now in my opinion and let this whole fiasco run its course

Problem with waiting is that a lot of the free agents that would've been available next offseason , there teams will be looking to extend them before they hit the market.

Pavelski , Kessel , the Sedins , Bergeron and Im sure a few others will all most likely see extensions.

I think Vanek is going to test the market.

Something that we shouldve been doing to our star players

Fuck you lou and your contract ways.

Fuck you lou for not giving up that #29 pick

$20M per from Russian league. I can't believe we lost Zach for this guy. This is just atrocious.

Who ever said it we wont take a cap hit is wrong... here is the quote from ESPN today

As a result of the 30-year-old's retirement, the Devils will have to pay a cap restructure penalty of around $300,000 until 2024-25 -- when the contract was set to expire -- NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said on TSN Radio. That is because the cap advantage on Kovalchuk's contract was approximately $4 million over the first three seasons of his 15-year, $100 million deal, which was signed in 2010, according to Daly.

I just cant believe it... and you all thought our PP was bad before.. now imagine Kovy not on it at all.... I think he had 80% of our very limited PP goals as it was..... This is beyond bad.

I think it hit Lou by surprise.... he would have made a bigger splash in UFA this year if he knew this was coming... hell, the moves he made where based around Kovy on this team... not Kovy being gone.

Well, F U Kovy, you really fucked us....

i have to add sutter and clarkson to that list

how is it that the devils are the only team to get players that are homesick?

Because it's the only team you pay attention to? Plenty of players test the free agent market and leave their teams.

leave their teams for more money yes

they dont leave their teams cause they are homesick. maybe 1 or 2 players here or there do but im sorry to have 2 coaches 1 hall of fame d man another bound for the hall the 3rd would've certainly been in the hall of fame. sorry but you dont just see that. keep in mind we are talking during a 6 year span here people this isnt like its over the course of 30 + years.

sutter homesick gone
robinson family gone
parise homesick/family gone
neids family gone
kovy homesick/gone
clarkson? who cares about him but he did take a discount to go to the leafs.

bigger question here.

if you think this looks bad as fans how does this look to UFA's down the road?

By the way, TG needs to get his site on new servers. I understand this probably one of the biggest news headlines in Devils history, but even when they signed Clowe or Ryder, that site was down.

so reading tg it seems the devils could've "tolled" the contract? meaning that they suspend him cap hit comes off the book and they dont owe him anything? thus keeping him from being able to play any other type of pro hockey?

wonder if the khl gave beek some side cash to keep that from happening?
