I believe he is worried about the time table he has left to chase that 6th ring, which he wont have a chance to get anyway with this roster/coaching staff. It would be wise to amnesty him for next year.
I always think of the franchise players in football who willingly restructure contracts to bring in more talent for the sake of winning another championship. Kobe needs to take a page out of their books...

I'm pretty sure the new NBA CBA does not allow players to restructure like the NFL. That's why I didnt suggest it. I think amnesty is the only way.

Nope. All contracts in the NBA are guaranteed, which is why they granted each team one amnesty clause after the new CBA agreement. As much as I dislike Kobe, bagging on him for not restructing is something I can't blame him for. Because it's not possible in the NBA. I'm sure if he knew there would be a cap the way it is now, he would've thought long and hard about wanting to make $30 mil in one season which is more than half of your team's cap.

The only way that I can see Kobe being amnestied or even making that suggestion to the Lakers would be if something happens with his recovery that would result in him missing the entire season anyway.

Outside of that, he will show up and despite all evidence to the contrary, believe that he can lead the Lakers to the title!! Gotta admire the confidence, if not the common sense!!

I think amnesty has to be used by end of FA period. That is the potential problem.
If the setback occurs after that, then they are just screwed.
That's why my opinion was that both sides should just agree to it beforehand (although I know it isn't happening).

Why amnesty Kobe? The Lakers aren't winning a ship with or without him, might as well keep him since he is the face of that franchise and maybe half of Lakers fans not in Cali are mostly Kobe fans.

That really wasnt the point. The point was, franchise players in the NFL will put themselves in position to help the franchise. Kobe can take a page from their book by helping the franchise by sitting out a year and fully recover from this injury being amnestied. If he fully recovers and can play at an all star level by the date he has set for himself, I will be the first to stand corrected.

The point behind amnestying Kobe would be to amnesty him for this season (which is the final season of his current contract) and use the resultant cap relief to go after a free agent in this current market. Then re-sign him at a lower rate next summer.

Getting a quality free agent now and re-signing Kobe at a lower 2 year contract next summer would leave the Lakers cap space to bring in another top free agent next summer.

It would also have the added benefit of allowing Kobe a full year to re-hab his achilles and give his body a full year to rest from all of the mileage that he has put on it over the course of his career.

Extremely unlikely that it would happen, but not a bad thought!!

In other news: they just announced on the radio that Mitch Kupchak said that "there have been no complaints about the offense or coach from Howard or his people"!!

Before the rest of you say it: I know, I know!! "What else is he supposed to say?" On the other hand, what is Chris Broussard supposed to say when he works for ESPN and they are known to make crap up to get a headline?

Broussard is horrible. I don't take anything he says seriously even if he gets some stuff right sometimes (rare). I like Stein better, Woj the best. Broussard is just a dumbass who makes up shit.

Yeah, I typically don't believe much in the way of NBA rumors until Woj says it's true!!

Oh, trust me, I live here and know all about California's ridiculous taxes!! Not sure I'd want to play here either if I were a professional athlete.

I just think it's laughable that some were saying Dwight would sign with a Texas team because of the lack of income tax, but then talk about how the Heat's big 3 "sacrificed" to play together!!

They didn't sacrifice, the difference between what they signed for in Miami and what they would have gotten on a max deal in another state, isn't that great either.

Besides, the idea that a player is "sacrificing" by signing for a few million less when they're making 10's of millions is pretty funny!!

Or when they are raking in close to 100 mil in endorsements.

If it is not a sacrifice then why do so few do it?

I think it's about the ego feed of being paid that kind of money!! Being able to say that they are so good that they are being paid the absolute maximum amount possible.

Regardless of how some may feel about the Heat's big 3, what they did was unique in the sense that most players don't start signing for less until they are on the downside of their career and are signing with contenders trying to get the championship that they didn't get as max contract players.

As much as they have been hated on, if other top players are willing to do what the big 3 did, the league would be better for it.

Why not concentrating on getting phil j to coach or even be GM. If the Lakers are so desperate in obtaining dwight then do what would coerce him to stay. No amount of banners and building ornamentation would.

You'd have to ask Short Buss!! Laker fans would be ecstatic if they brought Phil back in ANY capacity that involved him basketball decisions!!

It's the sign of the times man. Jerry passed, and a new regime has taken over. These posters are something I'm not even mad at anymore because I had to realize who was in charge now. Jerry Buss would've never done this. Didn't even consider doing this for KOBE in 04. This is the Lakers. You are supposed to make your pitch, BY MAKING YOUR PITCH....not with some stupid billboards. It basically comes down to this, you either keep D'antoni or Dwight. The Lakers have set a precendent of choosing the player everytime and I'd say it's worked out pretty well so far. Dump Dantoni or watch Dwight walk out high and dry.
