We've got guys in here saying he was the GOAT and THAT's the best highlight we can come up with? A layup against a bunch of 40 yr old short white guys name George and Fred? Not impressed. Bill Russell would have a very difficult time making a roster in today's game. He just wasn't that good, as Wilt proved.
You can leave the thread now. Seriously, get real

cmon... I am sure you have watched NBA Classics. The dude was so ahead of his time athletically it was absurd. He could defend todays centers no problem.. He would make Dwight Howard look silly.

He could jump outta the gym and had lightning quick feet. At his size he was incredibly good rebounder and could score when the C's needed him too.

Against short old white guys named Fred and George. When he played Wilt he got exposed. He wouldn't start for a single team in the NBA, not even the Charlotte Hornets.

Hakeem > Kobe

In fact, Kobe wouldn't even be the player he is today if it wasn't for Hakeem and his tutelage.

You guys should have seen the cries of outrage in the CBS daily thread when I said that The Mailman would mop the floor with Russell. Pure sacrilege to a proud Bostonian.

I would say Russell would be the almost identical player Dwight Howard is...Great rebounder and shot blocker, but zero offensive skill. Russell however, believe it or not was a worse ft shooter than Howard....I guess Russell in todays game wouldn't even be on the court in close games since teams would do the Hacka-russell.

What you're saying is very unpopular amongst the Russellites here.

You know how we say the players in the 60s could never be elite today -- but what if someone like George Mikan had access to the technology and strength & conditioning of today's athletes? Who's to say they wouldn't be great now?

Who's to say they would?

That is why these debates are kind of pointless. They are fun yes, but at the end of the day is is pure speculation.

Would George Mikan also have access to technology that made him go from a white player to a black player?

Just curious?

Its hard to look at Russell highlights and not notice that he is blocking people while barely leaving the ground and getting blocks when not at the apex of his jump. He is basically on the list because of his intangibles.

So can somebody explain to me why Magic is top 2 in half of your polls but Stockton is barely ranked? Stockton's top 12 years are virtually identical to Magic, if not slightly superior. He was a better shooter than Magic, better at stealing the ball, and more effective at passing statistically. I gave Magic the benefit of the doubt because of versatility (6'8 > 6'1), but I can't see any possible argument for Magic being that much better than Stockton.

I guess if Hammer shouts "Magic is the best" enough, it will seep into your subconscious.
