Wilbon said something about the Bucks might move there?

Just pure speculation. Simmons threw it out yesterday during Countdown. There's no validity to it whatsoever. It's just the Bucks are for sale and have been struggling for awhile. So Simmons said "Hey! What if the Seattle group buys them!"

Funny how when Bennett wanted to move the Sonics back in 2008 that whole process was streamlined, but now when Hansen tries to move the Kings to Seattle, the whole mess gets bogged down and there's delays and delays, just long enough to get a deal done, which frankly, still doesn't even compare to the deal Seattle has had in place for months now.

I'm glad for the fans of the Kings I really am. I lived in Seattle when the Sonics were stolen, so although I don't watch the NBA, I saw how devastated some of the die hards were. But Bennett and Stern can go fuck off.

Stolen

The city tried to sue, but settled out of court. Money talks and money was one thing he supersonics were not making.

After year one in OKC Forbes magazine estimated a 12% net worth increase from $268 to $300 million (Money talks). In addition to that percentage of available ticket sales went from 78% in Seattle, to 100% in OKC (money talks).

Seattle didn't want to support their team and lost them as a result. The team wasn't stolen, it was a loser and sought greener pastures. Money talks and Seattle didn't want to shell it out. You want to blame Bennett and Stern but the reality is you need only blame the people of Seattle for not supporting there supposed "beloved" team and blame your city government for caving to a money settlement offer.

Sacramento was able to mobilize a lot faster and stronger than Seattle was able to do, thanks in large part to seeing what happened in Seattle five years ago.

Right, thanks to David Stern moving the process along.

Stolen

Yes money talks. So why did they vote to keep the team in Sacramento? I'm seeing an ownership group consisting of 4 billionaires and a $500M arena just waiting to go in Seattle.

I'm very aware of the Sonics relocation situation in 2008. Seattle did sell out on the Sonics. That's not my point and I don't care about that. Stern was actively recruiting investors that would keep the Kings in Sacramento and was very against relocation. Where was that support for the Sonics when Bennett was trying to move them in 2008? Stern was more than happy to push that through.

I love revisionist history. No, I really do.

Seattle supported the team just fine. Did you see the sellouts for the decade before your owner lied and stole the team? You know, the team was fine until the idiot owner entered into a deal with an arena that at the time Stern had praise for and just a couple of years later when the arena expansion wars started it was said Key didn't have enough suites and luxury accommodations for the corporate money they NEEDED to stay alive. They obviously didn't 'need' that just a few years earlier when they signed a long term lease. He demanded to be let out of that lease and threatened to sell the team to force it. Bennett swooped in like the pied piper and took advantage of the situation.

Schultz is a total piece of shit, Bennett has no honor AT ALL and is just a scum sucking bottom feeder, and Stern is a little hitler. Lots of villains to go around.

But to suggest the fans didn't support the team is laughable. Were the politicians also to blame? Sure, they had a role in it as well, but what is a contract good for? They were in the right in dealing with Schultz.

I don't think most Seattle fans hate OKC's fans, confused about the facts as they may be, but mince no words that their owner is the second most hated man in this region.

How fair is it for a committee made up of 7 owners to be headed up by the very man who already screwed the city standing before it? Obvious conflict of interest. Of course Bennett was still trying to stick it to this town.

You want to talk about supporting a team. Let's see how packed your facility is when that team goes on a down cycle and don't be naive, every team goes through one. It is only a matter of time.

Seattle fan is the most spoiled fan in all of sports when speaking of arenas. I havent been to new Yankee stadium but to many other baseball parks while on business travel. Safeco is the best of the best. And then Qwest or whatever they call where the Seagulls play... Now with Husky stadium renovation.. Spoiled!

And they want a new state of the art Basketball arena? Please. This city is so freaking spoiled they are blinded by it.

HAHA! The hippies wave this flag at Portland Timbers MLS matches. This was the flag Oregon voted on to replace current flag. The current Oregon state flag was voted the ugliest of all 50 state flags. And this is what they come up with as a reeplacement... OH PORTLAND.....:burt:

Wasn't the fans asking for a new arena. I liked/like the Key. It was that fucking stupid ass idiot owner who demanded it and the slimeball he sold the team to. Now Stern says the Key isn't good enough for them either. It was good enough in the early 2k's, but now it's garbage to them.

Actually I'm tired of all the great places to watch shitty teams play sports. I'd rather slum it and watch a winner. Maybe I should become a duck fan?

Mamba, you are leaving out a huge part of those great stadiums, the team put money into it. Schultz and Olympia were having talks but the guy truly is a coward and brought Stern in and Stern demanding a fully publically funded arena. Key Arena needed a renovation to allow for more luxury boxes and suites, they did not need a brand new arena. The Key Arena was a state of the art arena 6 years before Stern got told to come back when you act like a grown up by Olympia officials, the Seahawks and Mariners had the fricking Kingdome that literally was falling apart.

Also loved the quote earlier of the Thunder's value jumping up to $300 million. Wow a franchise is worth $50 million less than what it was bought for, is that really money making? You're an idiot if you think the team's value is not worth more in Seattle than OKC. Had they allowed what the city wanted an a renovation of Key Arena and it's value would've spiked as well.

Hansen/Ballmer group has voluntarily increased their bid to $625 million, how do the owners say 'no' to the sale?

The Latest on Bringing the NBA Back to Seattle

hansen-mic5_180_180.jpeg
Chris Hansen

In an effort to further demonstrate the extent of our commitment to bring basketball back to Seattle, we have elected to voluntarily increase our proposed purchase price for the Sacramento Kings NBA Franchise by $75 million — from an enterprise value of $550 million to $625 million. In conjunction with our revised offer, we have also guaranteed to the NBA that the Franchise would be a revenue sharing payer in all years in Seattle.
We would also like to take the opportunity to again point out just how far ahead our Arena project is:

  • The ownership group has acquired 100% of the property necessary to construct the Arena.
  • We have 100% of our private financing for the Arena committed and in place.
  • After being approved by the City and County Councils the Arena MOU/legislation was signed into law by the Seattle Mayor and King County Executive on October 16, 2012. The referendum period expired 30 days later.
  • We engaged our Arena architects two years ago and have completed our detailed design schematics and costing.
  • We have filed for our Master Use Permit and are well underway with the Environmental Review Process, which we expect to conclude late this year.
While we appreciate that this is a very difficult decision for the league and owners, we hope it is understood that we really believe the time is now to bring the NBA back to Seattle, and that it is paramount that we do everything we can to put Seattle’s best foot forward in this process.

Read something recently about this. The Sac deal is the worse deal (I knew that going in) but what I didn't know is they agreed to NOT accept revenue sharing for a couple years. No wonder the owners approved it. The NBA gets a publicly financed arena and they don't have to split the revenue pot with them. That's bullshit. Especially considering during the lockout, one of the primary reasons given for it was the league needed more revenue sharing to be competitive IN MARKETS LIKE SACRAMENTO. So it just confirmed what I already believed. The Lockout was shady bullshit and this has a similar smell

It is shady and has Sterns greasy paws all over it. I understand they don't want another team to move and that the unanimous BOG vote was not a Sac vs. Seattle vote, but more of 'has Sac done everything asked by the NBA to keep the team" and the answer to that is yes. But, the deal is worse for the NBA in the long run which should make the sale of the team vote very interesting. Just wait until the taxpayers see how many millions Johnson is going to get them for and the shit will hit the fan in Sac town.:pop2:

I remember back on CBS when I had some spirited debates with people regarding the lockout. It was amazing how many people chose to see the issue as if they were the owners. It was also pretty sad how many of them believed the BS the owners claimed.

Saw this posted as a comment on the Phil Jackson article I linked on the other thread. Thought it was interesting.

Number one, the finance committee did not participate in that relocation vote....seven members of the committee voted, and sources indicate the vote was actually 4-3 against relocation, so Stern wanted unanimity and presented it as 7-0. This was before the offer by HBNW of an additional 75 million dollars. Number two, the league called for the meeting because according to the by-laws, the offer of a sale must be voted on within 120 days or the sale is validated, and May 21st will be 120 days since the PSA was signed by the Maloofs.

Don't know how I've been overlooking this thread. Great conversation here, too many to respond to this morning, but Mont I was at ESPN at the time and I also thought it was freaking crazy how many fans sided with the owners.

Oftentimes, I think, people forget that (1) a good accountant can make any company look like their taking a hit every year, and (2) most owners really make their money when they sell, so looking at YoY is absurd to begin with.
