sid's insurance is going to be astronomical.. with his contract and his propensity for head injuries, it's going to be nearly impossible for european teams to insure him i think.. especially this late in the game where most teams that could've afforded him, have already signed a couple NHL'ers

I believe players have been forced to insure themselves while playing oversees.

i think most are just playing for basically room/board while their 'salary' just goes to insurance.. at least, that's how most of the flyers are playing

but i know grossmann has had trouble getting a team to even do that (recent knee surgery).. he signed a 4 game contract with SSK because they couldn't afford him for a longer duration

If the full season gets the axe I think you'll see some more of the big money teams overseas starting a second signing spree. Right now they don't want to be paying big money for a guy who's going to bolt at a moment's notice if the NHL resumes.

Mediation is off to a rip-roaring start :L

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen has issued a follow-up statement today regarding a mediator assigned to the ongoing labor negotiations between the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association:

“Within one hour after I issued a press release announcing that further negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA would be conducted under the auspices of the FMCS, it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota, one of the mediators I assigned. Accordingly, in order to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations, I have determined to take immediate action, namely to remove Commissioner Serota from this assignment.”

what did the guy say that made him say his twitter get hacked?

I guess as long as Bettman keeps lining the owners pockets, it doesn't really matter what kind of characters he associates the NHL with. I mean, has any other league had more former owners indicted than the NHL?

Brad Richards chimes in:

"A mediator's not an arbitrator. There has to be a negotiation. There hasn't been. Them saying they came from 43 percent (in the league's initial offer) up to 50 is the biggest crock I've ever heard. We were never at 43 percent. No one's ever played at 43 percent. If you go on any benchmark of what negotiation should be, we were at 57 (percent of hockey-related revenue) and we agreed to go down.

"I still don't know what they think negotiation is, and none of us really do."

The last time Gary Bettman turned the keys and locked out the National Hockey League's players, it marked the last time Mark Messier, Scott Stevens, Al MacInnis, Adam Oates and Ron Francis played professionally.

In the current work stoppage, there's similar concern that a wiped-out season means a forced finale for elite players like Daniel Alfredsson and Teemu Selanne (noooooo!) and role players like Thornton and Matt Cullen.

But is the mass exodus of players from the NHL because of a work stoppage actually a myth, compared the typical rate of attrition?

Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal had a fantastic post on Cult of Hockey that examined the actual attrition rate for NHL players during a decade — including the 2004-05 lockout that basically ended a few Hall of Fame classes' careers.

Marty is probably done too, even though the only reason he wanted a 2nd year was incase of the lockout
