except there has ever been any sort of guarantee that players receive full value on current deals.

I agree that just rolling back salaries shouldn't be done but I'd also like to know more about all this "make whole" talk that has been discussed recently.

Scratch that... just wake me when it's over.

Screw Bettman and the owners. They're something in business known as 'negotiating in good faith'. And when those owners signed contracts with players, it's not in good faith to ask for a rollback next summer. That's the ONLY thing (well, biggest thing) preventing a deal right now. Players have agreed to 50/50, but they want some sort of guarantee on their current deals.

If the NHL rams through this deal without any sort of 'make whole' clause, can players opt out of all those decade-long deals? Pretty fucking slimy to sign a player long term at a discount, only to lock them out if they don't accept a 14% rollback within a year. Really can't understand how anyone backs the owners on this one.

I don't think you can paint the owners as one bargaining unit anymore.

The owners are being grouped into one cohesive unit opposite the PA - that is obviously not the case. Some owners want revenue sharing, tighter salary controls, etc. while others just want salary rollbacks and others who the hell knows what they want (well other than lots of concession sales like beer and pretzels).

Having Craig Leipold on the owner's negotiating comittee is crazy - he knew this was coming and he figured he'd lock up the two free agent prizes and then let the chips fall where they may - once hockey does come back in whatever form of a new CBA, those guys are on his team. Forcing a team's hand with an offer sheet is one thing; what he did is force the entire league into that situation. Those two contracts he dished out not only partially led to this, it also screwed up the entire basis of the player's escrow payment system, and without that system, there is no way to tie salaries to revenue. That is no way to run a team. I thought contracts had to be negotiated in good faith - seems hard to believe from this dolt.

Gary Bettman gets most of the blame directed at him, but for me, most of it falls on the shoulders of Craig Leipold. Fuck you Mr. Leipold, fuck you. You never intented to pay that salary and you know it, and your stupidity has brought the league to this...

I really think that Fehr believes that the owners/Bettman won't cancel a second season and he's holding out for as long as it takes to get the best deal for the players. For all the supposed negotiation that's been reported, it's still a game of chicken between the NHL and NHLPA.

At what point are they going to HIT each other so someone has tow swerve?

This is a great post. I've looked at Jacobs & Leopold as bad guys here from the start because of the contracts they've offered pre-cba ending. I can't figure out how they're allowed on the negotiating committee & yet Snider(who some feel was the driving force behind this isn't allowed to be on it). Seems strange.

Bill Daly told CSN that the NHLPA's latest offer would have the players making 65% of the HRR in Year 1 of the deal. #HireMediator

the thing is that I dont believe fully what Daly is saying. he is probably quoting the NHLs interpretation of it to make it more negative. I really dont believe tha the 2 sides can negotiate with each other fairly. :drink:

This. Biggest obstacle to an agreement

Cancel the season already.

Bettman cares about his legacy (what a joke) too much to cancel. He wants it to appear that he did all that was humanly possible to save NHL hockey this season.

Methinks if Paul Kelly was still leading the NHLPA, we would have had an agreement in place...

Have you guys seen the latest prescription from Dr. Recchi?!?

All in all, said Recchi, he believes it’s time for the players “to think like businessmen.’’
“They have to think, what is best?’’ he said, reflecting again on the players’ ongoing objection to the possibility that not all contracts will be made whole. “Are they better to get 90 percent of what they’re due, or are they better to get zero?’’

Recchi’s advice to NHLers: Sign CBA, get back to work - Hockey - Boston.com

good read as always 30 Thoughts: Holding the line on contracts | Hockey | CBC Sports

We know the NHL and NHL Players' Association are close on revenue sharing. We know they are less than $400 million apart on the make-whole provision. They are still arguing over who is going to bear the financial burden of lost revenue from this season.

But now a line in the sand on contract issues?

At Monday's PrimeTime Sports Management Conference in Toronto, NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr said, "It's kind of hard to believe anyone's going to drive the industry bus off a cliff over things like that, but I've seen things before that surprise me."

3. Bettman hasn't exactly shown distinguished leadership, but there are a lot of people concerned about the toll this is taking on his health.
fuck him.

Tough shit. If Bettman can't handle the job because of health issues it would be GREAT for the league. Get somebody else who can actually get the job done. Gary Bettman has been an utter failure as Commisioner of the NHL. Everytime the CBA has ended under his so called leadership the owners have locked out the players. Hey Gary, FUCK YOU!!:mad2:
