I have been wanting to try Gelato. I like frozen treats someone told me that Talenti is really good and I assume it's a tad healthier than Ben and Jerrys
Talenti is very good.

I have not compared labels between them and any other frozen dairy desert though.

Is it generally a healthier option to Ice Cream?
My 2 cents, like most foods - the quality of the ingredients matter most. If using grass fed dairy, ice cream is probably healthier since the fat in grass fed dairy is the healthiest part. Beyond that, it depends on what fillers are in there and authentic gelato is likely to win there, but a good quality ice cream might be close.

Higher fat isn't usually a determining factor of healthful unless added or from frying.

That's not the problem, it's the result, too many greedy people selling to too many dumb people. We need better labels because there's too many ingredients in most things that nobody can read between any lines.

We have "gluten free" oatmeal when oatmeal has always been gluton free. Fat free products with double the salt and sugar, the stuff that converts to fat once you eat them....

Separate problems, but both are problems.

It's a problem that the stuff is in there and it's a problem that people think that the FDA and USDA wouldn't allow it if it were a problem.
Greed and corruption that cause that problem is a totally separate problem.

Here's why I tie them together:

  1. If people were smart enough to demand healthy food and smart enough to realize it costs more, and pay for it - then the greedy wouldn't be making food as cheaply as possible
  2. If the food was actually healthy there would be less need for misleading labels
  3. There's a perception that eating healthy costs a lot, but buying more healthy ingredients and less processed junk can reduce that burden substantially.

Linguica?
Among many other things. Very similar to Spanish food, but with different names and slight variations. Immense variety of seafood (mostly fish), appetizers, rices dishes, meats, salads, etc.

I don't know if I totally agree with that, not that the merit isn't obvious.

Fast food is dominated by tastiness that hides absolute crap. It's loaded with fats, sugars, salt and loaded with fakeness similar what @Yankee Traveler posted about ice cream - just so chicken scraps can feel like a chunk of chicken. All of it is very cheap, lacks almost any nutritional benefit and is very addictive. I'd argue these are predominantly food like products.

Healthy food costs more and, from an unrefined palette perspective, doesn't taste as good. Add in fast food is generally prepared by minimum wage workers and healthier foods by standard restaurant staff who can live on their wages. Add in that a healthy meal is a complete meal and not just bread, meat and fried potato.

Go to a good restaurant and compare the salmon to the steak.

One last thing - even what we think as decent restaurants are in on the junk treatment. How can they have all that variety? Simple, it's all frozen in bags as pimply "chefs" heat the bags in water (called sous vil) , then bring them to life with a moment under broilers. That perfect char- grilled burger with grill marks? The grill marks are there before the final cooking, complete with fake charcoal seasoning.

Fresh healthy food demands that it be prepared properly. Most people are inherently just plain lazy. "I worked a long day and I'm too tired to peel and cut and cook. I'll go to Chipotle's and get a bowl. $7.99 for grass fed burger? I'll buy the cheap stuff and get three pounds for $3.99 a pound. I don't give a shit that it's four day over code sirloin that was $13.99 lb and no one bought it.

Back in NH, Market Basket used to freeze meats a day before the code ran out and sell it for half price. Didn't matter if it was $3.99 burger or $18.99 filet. If you wanted good stuff frozen, the freezer case was the place to buy Choice.

This is the trick.

1. Don't go to McDonalds, BK, Wendy's expecting a healthy choice you will not get one. You go to these places for convivence but a salad option here is $9.00 and the fried food options $8.00 so in this sense that salad is super expensive. Now go to your grocery store purchase $20.00 worth of salad makings for lunch at work and you will get five meals so in this sense you save and eat healthier.

2. Correct fast food are flavor bombs but when you learn to cook and cook well, proper herbs and spices you can make an other wise bland chicken breast and amazing meal. Time and effort make the difference.

Very familiar with Portuguese food. Lots of them in my hometown.
I remember fishing on the pier in Morro Bay with an old Portuguese fishing a100' away.
I was catching a lot of fish and he was catching nothing. He walked down to see what I was doing differently.
He looked at the water and saw a school of fish swarming my fishing spot.
He was shocked and although we didn't speak the same language, I motioned to a burlap bag sitting on the pier a few feet away.
He looked inside to see rotten fish, swarming with maggots.
As the bag cooled the maggots wriggled out and fell in the water, attracting thre school of fish!
He smiled and walked back to his spot and grabbed his gear.
He came back and cast his line and pulled out a bottle of homemade seaweed whiskey.
It turned out to be a very pleasant evening!

Here's the flaw - you lay out a smart approach, but the world is full of dummies. In the dummy world, the healthy food is for tomorrow. But tomorrow isn't an actual date, it's always a relative date that never arrives.

Not everyone of course. Dumb doesn't mean stupid, it means lacking thought... and often controlled by addiction. Eating salt and sugar and simple fat is an addiction, and those selling it know it.

I was at Publix deli bar getting my wife a sandwich yesterday. Their was a crowd of fat black women buying precooked food for their famlly. I just had a conversation with my wife about how poor black folks are going out for their food a lot. How can they afford it?

They can't. They are spending money they really don't have. But they've been trained that they are entitled to treat themselves and trained that's the way to do it.

I'm referring to people lacking financial resources as a whole and not specifically a size, race or gender.
