That response was in reference to cdummy , who was laying out some serious homer delusions of the doncos. They weren't extreme by homer standards, just we here not being donco fans, can see it for what it is not.
My bad, I thought it was more directed at the comments of...well shit, that might not even be this thread...

Hey
… speaking of what makes great quarterbacks, I finished watching Vick’s ‘Evolution of the Black Quarterback’ on prime. It has a good examination of how the position is changing to more athletic types rather than the old school pocket passer … and it hits me how folks in general do not realize that Brady’s greatness was his ability to stay in the pocket … understanding the field, the individual pass patterns, the defenses, the receiver’s abilities, etc etc … it wasn’t just a set of balls that allowed him to stay there but knowing WTH was happening on the entire field and predicting the moving parts.

We always had good athletes like Graham and Tarkenton and Montana and Favre and Rogers who could jump out of the pocket and single-handedly create the play … but in the long run and in the playbook, those are ‘broken plays’ and as exciting as they are, their shelflife would always be limited … not in just career longevity, but throughout each game

Manning was about as close to Brady as all the greats but Brady still is the champ from what I ever saw on the field for holding his position …

Vick’s abilities and the new group of QBs will always be great weapons fer sure, but to really understand the reason for Brady’s greatness is to understand how different his style is to the ‘new way’ …

jes sayin’

Not to mention a great O Line that was superbly coached.

And longevity, was to never expose himself to unnecessary beatings. His only serious injury was a cheap low shot directly to his knee.

I don't believe that Mahomes is going to make it 15 years because he's still not sliding early. Almost, as if he wants the hit for the added penalty.
Tua should be the prime example of what can happen when a QB exposes himself too often.

I played tackle in HS (both ways, not cuz I was good, it was a tiny New England regional high school) … and it doesn’t take much projection to understand pass blocking is much better when you know what’s behind ya … another item not discussed much, but I can imagine anyone, from Light to Solder would admit it was easier knowing where Brady was

Bernie Pollard almost single-handedly changed the fortunes of Patriots teams and players careers......

Mahomes looks frail because he walks like a woman … but all these guys are tougher than they look. Brady got blasted many times and popped back up … it’s in their blood I think
… but Unitas always hit me as the toughest through and through … he was my favorite before Brady as goat … in the ‘field general’ category anyway

“That one didn’t hurt … that one didn’t hurt … that one hurt.”
lol … baby face, tough as sh*t …

but I remember Jim Brown getting up slow just to eff up the tacklers heads, not knowing if they hurt him or not … for seconds before the next play … btw Jim never ran out of bounds

Ray Lewis, Jason Taylor and Brian Urlacher all said he was the toughest QB they ever hit.

I love his attitude. Nah, that's just good clean football, I gotta slide or get rid of the ball.

Yeah, and saying how he felt protected in the pocket says a lot of what we were talking about … he knew the game

It's ok. Better late than never.

Wow didn't realize I typed that fast and added all that extra. I started off hating Brady but grew towards the end of his time with the Pats to respect him. I like him because in this interview he understands exactly what he signed up for when playing the game of football. You see players today making business decisions on the field hurting their team but maybe saving themselves. Part of me doesn't fully fault them as they do have to protect themselves to a degree since one hit can ruin their entire career, but yet you signed up making millions knowing part of the game is getting hit and hitting others.
I appreciate that Brady here understands the job on the other side of the ball. Now I will say when he was playing he definitely had his plenty of times arguing with officials about calls (Manning did too). So I don't think he is completely innocent in this situation, but appreciate what he said here.

Can Newton not diving on the ball comes to mind...

I get that too. On the flip side arguing with the officials and trying to get the call to go your way is part of the QB job. Then admit what you thought years later.

Oh agreed. And that is why I included Manning on that list. They are looking for every advantage they can get to help them win a game. I can't blame them for that. I do hate watching guys like Lebron flopping in the NBA to get a call though making it look like someone just tried to murder him. To me that is going to the extreme and hurting the actual product on the field/court.

The NFL equivalent today to me is QB's waiting until the last second to put a defensive player in a bind about their slide or what Mahomes does acting like he is running out of bounds to then cut it back leaving a defensive player in a difficult spot to either get penalized for hitting him at the sideline or allowing Mahomes to escape for a big play down the sideline. I get that it is an advantage that the league has allowed, but to me it hurts the actual product we are watching.
