Yeah, we've seen this movie before. Actually every year.

They have spells where they look like they can't beat anyone and just overall play terrible baseball.

They have spells where they get hot and maybe a bit lucky and go on win streaks that can remind you of 2001. Only they don't last the whole season like it did that year.

I will always be happy about these streaks and winning spells, but I'm never going to take them for more than that. It's just one of those small windows in the season where watching them doesn't totally suck.

As much as I will NEVER understand the Foolio contract, the Cal contract is amazing. Some on twitter bitched that you should not give a catcher at his age that long term of a deal. I say I don't give a shit. He deserves every penny. And I don't care if he is a lifetime .218 hitter or whatever he is. He is the heart and soul of this team. It goes way beyond batting average.
Batting average focus is soooo 1990s. LOL. On Base Percentage is where it is at. That's why I have some tolerance for the anemic batting averages of ARoz and JP. They are still getting on base. Of course, I would rather see their OBP being driven by hits. But, you know, it's the Mariners. Beggars can't be choosers.

Yes. I forgot about that, but it is true.
I wish they would bring Ford, Young, and Santos all up. Stick Young at 2nd. Put Moore in RF, Ford at 1B/C/DH (with Cal's extension, Ford has no future as a catcher with the Mariners), waive Tellez and Garver, and option Canzone back to Tacoma. Santos should be with the club, not with the Rainiers, working out his control issues in non-critical situations. And why they won't cut ties with Canzone is another Dipoto head scratcher. The guy is almost 28-years-old. If he is ever going to be a useful MLB player, it seems like he would have proven it by now.

Agree though I am 50/50 on Santos coming back up. I never watched him with the Sox but when we got him writers went nuts on the deal. While watching him with us, I have not seen one dominant inning. His fast ball is mediocre with nothing to it and his off speed stuff doesn't really move to the point of throwing hitters off. I hope I am wrong.

Canzone is what you said. I don't get it. I have never gotten it with him. Raw power? Absolutely. But nothing else.

I have no problem using Ford as backup catcher while being a utility guy as well. I think that could be so valuable if his bat contributes. The only problem I have with Ford is that every time I see it written I immediately think Mike Ford every time. My old brain reverts back in time over here and now.

I have mixed feelings on OBP. I 100% get your point on it, but I also thinks it depends on player type and situation. If your best RBI guy takes a couple strikes but walks with RISP, his OBP goes up but that wouldn't really be a win. I want that guy hitting. Same with a guy like Tellez. He walking is just putting a roadblock on the bases. Has way less value than a guy like Moore walking. I could be 100% wrong with my mindset on it. I know guys on leads to runs for most teams but just see it different with different players.

No, you aren't wrong, in my opinion. Valuing OBP over BA is not generic. It fully depends on the hitter. A walk to speedsters like ARoz, JP, and Moore has value (as long as second base is open). For Tellez, not so much.

The main gripe I have with Moneyball is it pretends OBP is the most important stat in the game. You are 100% it is good stat for guys who are going to steal 40 plus bags or has a run producer behind him.

A RBI will always be a more important stat than OBP IMO because the entire point of the game is to score more runs than the other team, you don’t win a game cause you have more LOB than the other team.

Lawrence back up, Taylor back down. Pretty odd management style so far.

Cal got a little hosed. First 5 pitches were all balls, but somehow he had a full-count without swinging.
