I'm really not sure what will happen, I guess the best case Manning is starting for the Niners and worst case Kaepernick is starting for the Niners.

I still believe we MUST draft the following:

DE, RG, RB, C, WR, FS

The drafting of the RB, DE, C, and FS is as heir apparents to Goodson, gore, Justin, and Badwin respectively. The drafting of a RG is a MUST within the first three rounds if we don't pick one up in FA. WR I envision we would draft to groom into Moss' role.

no argument we need to look ahead, but we're now slotted 30th. hope you're not expecting the 30th pick of round 5 and 6 to eventually be "an heir apparents"? i'd even question the 30th pick of round 4?

odds are against these picks becoming good players like Gore, Justin, and Goodwin. am i reading your expectations incorrectly?

Funny line from a commenter on PFT article:

If he goes Tenn. he will be more powerful than the governor.Contract for life

This is what I was saying to someone the other day.....don't underestimate this as an opportunity for Peyton to establish his roots. I suppose that is why Tenn is even one of the options in the first place. After he retires he could have any job he wants there.....maybe even buying the team.

if we got manning, time to go for broke the next 3 years.

bring in burress and donnie avery
resign ginn to return kicks if possible
sign gallery
bring in another running back like tolbert or cadilac
bring back franklin and sign wimbley to be situational guys
resign smith to be our waterboy

trade up with a 3rd, maybe next years 3rd too to get ahead of houston
hopefully walk away with konz and dwayne allen in the 2nd. if allen is gone bentley should be there for depth at corner

staley, iupati, konz, gallery, davis should be able to protect our investment. tolbert (hope he didn't sign anywhere yet), would be huge in short yardage. we'd have a good mix of downfield threats and red zone targets. i think donnie avery would beat out crabtree in camp and he's a speedy/shifty guy that seems to do well with manning.

If we get Manning it is highly likely the only money we have left under the cap is for signing the draft picks. Remember unlike Madden you can't turn the Salary Cap option off.

but players rarely restructure unless you give them more future money.

off hand, i can only thing of elite QB's with HUGE contracts, restructuring for same or less?

Sopoaga was a 5th round pick from Hawaii who had the measurables but really didn't know how to play. Kilgore was a 5th rounder who the FO seems very fond of. Blount from TB was undrafted. Typically players in rounds 5 on have warts of some kind, albeit either lack of measurables or lack of experience, but if drafted and coached up, can be contributing members to a team and sometimes great players for you. I figured you, the champion of stressing value, of all people would see that. I guess I was wrong.

Here's something I found on the ************ forums for you latest on Manning:

Byisgod just watched Lombardi on NFL Network and summarized

Lombardi stated the following:
- Anyone who claims to know anything about Manning's decision is full of s**t. He said that Manning has completely closed off his circle of friends, and therefore, no one knows where he will sign.
-Alex Smith is is serious danger right now. Lombardi doesn't feel that any other NFL team will even offer him the 3yr 24mil that the 49ers did. Also stated that the Phins will be bringing in David Garrard for a visit.
- He is hopeful that Manning will come to a decision in "a day or two."
- Denver, Tenn and SF are ALL less than optimistic about their chances. Translation: No one knows a f**king thing!

Yep. 1. Manning, Smith, Kaep 2. Manning, Kaep, Tolzien 3. Manning, Kaep 4. Smith, Kaep (honest competition), Tolzien 5. Kaep, Vet FA, Tolzien (competition) 6. Kaep, Tolzien, low draft pick.

I saw this coming. Though I don't believe Manning will actually sign ,I give the 49ers credit for going out and making the pitch to him under the radar. It shows that the front office knows what it is doing. They've done their job and displayed their interest. If Manning doesn't sign here, fuck him. The intersting thing will be to find out what they had to do to Harbaugh to get him to accept this.

I think Harbaugh definitely accepted this, but I can also guarantee that he didn't like it 100%. Singletary/Nolan would like it more. Harbaugh was replaced by Manning in Indy and he might have felt that he still had something left to prove. He has been said to understand Alex's plight in the first six years, the reason why he kept him in 2011. Now, he's making the business decision on Alex (conveniently a football decision, too). But I think he's overall ok with it and will be happy if it works out and happy for Smith if he succeeds elsewhere.

As for accepting Manning when Manning controlled the offense in Indy, I think winning will fix that but he'll have a long leash (but leash nonetheless) if we start losing with Manning games that we should. Manning will have plenty audible power, as Harbaugh's famous audible started a Bears collapse that had Ditka fuming afterwards. He didn't back down then so I don't think he'd expect Manning to do so and Manning was the better QB.

Players restructure contracts all the time. All teams have to do is adjust the signing bonus so it doesn't affect the cap.

Even if we weren't the favorites, there wouldn't be much reason for Alex not to look elsewhere, not knowing what's going to happen. He can't wait until after it happens and if Manning doesn't come, I bet he signs here.

I don't even know if Condon has an idea where Manning is going. I believe the parameters of a contract is done with all 3 teams and it's just up to Manning to choose where he wants to go.

Smith is just doing the smart thing and taking care of himself and working getting the leg work started just in case we do sign Manning.

I don't take Smith looking around as an indication we're going to land Manning or that we're favorites too.
