Keim 1/29/24

Biggest question Keim has heard about Johnson is "how will he handle the room?"

No one is saying he can't, but that is the consistent question Keim has heard about Ben.

Keim brought it up because the number one trait they are looking for is leadership.

All signs still point to Ben, but if it doesn't happen, that might be why. Said nothing is done until it's done.

Magic will be used to ask questions and probe how each coach would react in certain situations.

IF NOT BEN, THEN WHO?

Eric Bienemy
Does not see Bienemy getting the job.

Bobby Slowik
Has not heard Slowik's name a ton.

Mike MacDonald
Mike MacDonald is viewed as "very analytical."
He's considered a strong teacher and a strong communicator. Said MacDonald is willing to admit when he doesn't know something. Compared him to Gibbs.

Said Gibbs knew exactly who he was and was not. That was why he was able to surround himself with such a good staff. (paraphrasing)
Considered that a major plus.

One of the most attractive aspects of the Skins job is Harris showing a willingness to be patient. This was one of the things that separated the Skins from the other jobs, especially amongst the young coaches in this cycle.

Dan Quinn
Dan Quinn is considered to have the most leadership skills. Said that is relevant because leadership is the number one trait they are looking for.

With Quinn the question is what is his plan for offense? Same with MacDonald, but even more so for Quinn because of what happened in Atlanta. Additionally, they would want him to be more involved in the defense than he was in Atlanta. They don't want a situation like Rivera, where he was hands off.

The Skins did not go into this process saying "we are just going to hire Ben Johnson and waste everyone's time." Still might be Ben, but that was not the process.

Quinn would have to get off to a fast start because of how things ended in Atalnta.

Who these coaches plan to hire as their coordinators could be the difference.

Anthony Weaver
Ravens run defense has slipped. Keim ran his name by someone he knows and that person was a little surprised that his name was still in the mix. (paraphrasing)

Aaron Glenn
Rare to see a former cornerback elevate the way he has. Corner is not a leadership position on the field. You're mostly on an island. That speaks to the type of leader he is. To be where he is now.

One person Keim talked to said you would not have a schematic advantage with him, but he was a good leader. Very disciplined and handles the room well. Hard worker and very competitive. Not an ego maniac. Always studying and can see the big picture.

Speilman's brother would have insight on Johnson and Glenn.

"The expectation remains Ben Johnson."

"Don't be shocked if they go in a different direction." "It's the NFL."

Finished by saying, he knows a lot of people who think it will be Ben Johnson.

I'm gonna trust Peters until he gives me a reason not to, but if it's Johnson or MacDonald, I'll be pumped.

It is going to be Johnson. Mark it down. He is a former UNC QB and he is going to be coaching a former UNC QB either in Howell or Drake Maye or both.

To clarify, because he went to UNC, our current qb in Howell went to UNC, and maye went to UNC and might be our 2nd round pick Johnson should be the hire?

I am not sure all 3 going to UNC has anything to do with Johnson as a candidate at all.
Johnson would be a fine hire, but giving him the job based off of UNC coincidences would not be smart. Johnsons UNC connections should not hurt or help him get the head coaching job at all.

The board will have a meltdown if Johnson isn't hired...lol

I dont care where Johnson was a qb at. He is a great offensive coordinator.

Howell is a back up NFL qb, and I could not care less that he went to UNC.

I dont care if maye went to UNC either.

So is it that he just isnt that great at drawing up schemes?

Is he just awesome at leading people over a cliff?
I posted about this in the Slowik thread.

Seems like we are being prepped for Quinn.

Comments about his leadership, respect, and whatnot are fine.

The problem is, if that is all true, why isn't every team banging down the door to hire him?

Quinn to me represents the fact that peters couldn't get his guy so he went with plan c.

To your point, yes, he would be better than Rivera and his Carolina circus.

Keim apparently said that Chen and Macdonald are close.

I think Chen was in Baltimore for a time?

Keim 1/30/24

Skins got a text message mid-flight saying he was going to stay in Detroit.

Skins weren't scared of the money.
Keim heard last night that his family likes Detroit.
Skins did not tell Ben he wasn't getting the job.
Keim said only Ben knows the real reasons.

Slowik wasn't getting this job.

Down to MacDonald, Quinn, Weaver and Glenn.

Keim doesn't have an order, but feels stronger about MacDonald and Quinn.

Keim has said all along that he heard Peters was a lock and he never heard that about Ben. It was never Ben Johnson or bust. He was the preferred candidate though. They wanted an offensive coach.

They talked to MacDonald on Monday and Quinn on Tuesday.

MacDonald is very adaptive and has a connection with Shen. They shared an office. Is that enough to get him the job, no, but it certainly helps to have someone in the building that knows him. Will not be Shen's call. He's not part of the process.

Keim tried to stop himself from saying it's MacDonald and then Quinn, but it slipped out.

Seattle is very high on MacDonald.

Keim has heard the most positive things about Quinn. Keim knows alot of fans don't want Quinn.

Glenn is a leader and Keim went on to pretty much say he doesn't see Weaver getting it. (paraphrasing)

Timetable doesn't change. No new interviews. Keim would be shocked if they opened things back up and and mentioned Vrabel when saying that. Thursday and Friday are ideal for the Skins to announce.

Keim heard last night not to be surprised if Ben goes back. It wasn't presented to him as hard news though. Mentioned how Ben did it last year.

Everyone who has worked with him, for him, or played for Quinn, absolutely loves him.

Sheehan asked Keim if he thought Quinn would get the job. Keim said he didn't know. Keim said his gut wants to say Quinn because he fits the description of what they are looking for but then brought up Shen and wondered if the Skins think that MacDonald is a better version of Quinn.

Who they hire as their staff is very important.

Keim has never heard Vrabel's name attached to Skins. Said could be a power thing.

Quinn is a serious candidate but doesn't know if he will end up with the job.

Excellent summary.

It appears Quinn or macdonald.
