With the Falcons signing of Thomas DeCoud and the Franchising of Tyvon Branch, Dashon Goldson and Michael Griffin the Free Agent Safety market has all but dried up which means some team will likely outspend the Bengals from Nelson's services next season. I think they made a huge mistake by not placing the Franchise tag on him as he will likely follow Jonathan Joesphs lead and jump ship leaving the Bengals to scramble to add a CB and Safety this off season. Mike Brown needs to stop being the Farm system for other teams by letting the Teams star players (Takeo Spikes, Eric Steinbach, Justin Smith, Jonathan Joseph) get away!

Losing Joseph was tough and it was stupid. I don't feel the same way about Nelson. I think he is overrated and overvalued by our fans. His play in the last two games was horrendous.

But he's light years ahead of fucking Taylor Mays. I'd overpay Nelson in a heartbeat if it meant avoiding starting Mays or one of the other shitheaps on the team. And we're not going to sign anybody better. You can guarantee that. Our safety play is going to be awful this year.

Robert Sands is one of the most impressive safeties to ever catch footballs from a Juggs machine.

So, do we need to draft 1 safety, or 2?

Do we look to free agency to fill other needs and focus on drafting hard to fill areas?

one thing is for sure, the Bengals are not going to spend this year, since they have to spend next year, they don't want to get in a crunch.

I just hope that some of our good players don't decide to hold out for more money due to the nonsense and likelihood that we're going to struggle overall.

The problem is, aside from Barron, who I'm not sold on, there aren't really any good safeties. I'd move Clements there if it were me and sign a CB and draft another.

I believe Nelson is undervalued by our fans if anything. I have yet to see anyone on this board give him decent reviews. And I don't believe he's as bad as he looked at times because of the crap around him after Hall went down.

The safety play blew with Nelson and it will blow without him.

Nelson is nothing more than an average Safety. Not worth 6 mil a year. I'd rather have Mikell Martin in the 3rd.

Nelson, a former 1st Round Pick, has completely rebuild his career in Cincinnati under the tutelage of Mike Zimmer. I agree with you that Nelson is unappreciated by some fans but he's far better than the alternatives in Free Agency or the Draft.

Safety play was serviceable prior to the Hall injury. It went down the drain without Hall. Take Nelson away without a significant signing and it'll become even worse.

A 3rd round draft pick isn't going to be any better than Nelson.

Martin probably has the best ball skillful the draft. I see him as the big play maker we need. And you have no idea if he will be better. Plenty of mid round picks become great players.

Seriously, can't get much worse. Even if the play drops off a little....unles Nelson is going to start making some game changing tackles, FF, or INT's...I'd better use that money elsewhere and go with a younger guy who has more of an upside at this point. I think Nelson has reached about what he's going to do in the NFL. Not that he's bad, but the position could be upgraded.

We franchised Nugent, because we planned on spending money on Nelson, but we wanted the market to dictate his price rather than us jumping the gun and overspending.

He was still a first round bust originally, but has been "decent" since coming here. He may get better, but only if he stays in this system. If he changes, he will have a learning curve and have to take a step back.

Let the market dictate his value, spend the franchise tag on Nugent where the value of a franchise kicker is way less than any other position. Try to sign Nugent to a long term deal but if not, franchising him keeps him ours, but costs peanuts compared to the value of other positions (and the FG kicker is one of the leading scorers on the field).

We will bust a little nut on Nelson, but it is going to be market value for a guys that was almost washed out of football only to see marginal improvement in this system the last couple years. Nelson will get about 4.5 million a year for maybe 3 or 4 years.

I wish I could agree with Crash, but I think Mike has already let go of Reggie. There has to be a team out there that needs Safety help, and many other teams will sign Reggie a little extra to sign with them.

Now that Armon Binns has been crowned WR#2, vaulting him ahead of Caldwell and Simpson, I expect we'll be forced to draft 2 safeties and a CB (or 2)
This is one horrific off season. I might not have the sanity for this.

Nelson was barely an upgrade over Ndukwe and Chinny was a 7th rounder.

It's not how good Nelson is, because he isn't......it's how bad the main alternative (Mays) is....next to Mays, Nelson looks like Ronnie Lott, playing safety near the end of his career.....We really need to keep him, at least until a reasonable alternative can be found.....
