I guess. SInce sign stealing is such a new innovation and all.

:noidea:
I agree, but he will get in soon.
Congratulations to Scott Rolen on his election to the Hall.

Just makes it even weirder that Ortiz made it into the hof last season. If any speculation of cheating causes you not to make it then he should not on his first turn

Jimmy Rollins only got 12% of the vote? Yikes. He is borderline as a candidate. 12% says he’s not likely getting in. Give me a bit and I’ll set up a comparison between JRoll and Barry Larkin. Pretty comparable players. If Larkin is in, JRoll should be in.

I've already stated the Hall is dumb now without the 2 big names but stuff like Jeff Kent not being in is laughable. He had way better hitting stats than Rolen, Rolen's fielding is supposed to make up for that? Plus an MVP

Also, and I know this is a minority opinion, if Ozzie Smith is in the Hall Omar Vizquel should be too, just as good a glove and way better hitter.

I agree with vizquel. I have always said Kent doesn’t deserve it. And I am ok with rolen. He is a very weak HOFer though.

For me, Kent is a firm HOFer, but within that “fence” zone that I am somewhat OK with him not making it. I think he has a strong argument for making it through the vet committee.

Ozzie had the backflip that put him over the top….

He was SO lovable which trumps everything……amazing analyst also
Just proves it is nothing more than a high school popularity contest. The writers are a bunch of ego driven children who are incapable of looking at things without a heavy dripping dose of “look at me”.

Agree 1000%! Look at Schilling. I’m the first to say that he’s a horse’s ass but that shouldn’t impact his candidacy for the Hall. Dude has like an 80 WAR and went to the WS with 3 different franchises, winning for 2 of them in which he played a big role for all three teams he went with.

If you are outspoken politically, only one side of the argument gets crucified for it (Kent falls into this category as well). I don’t want to focus on this too much, but it is a factor that can’t/shouldn’t be ignored.

It’s all nonsense. It should be about the baseball.

Not seeing it.

Larkin: .295/.371/.444, 116 OPS+, 198 HR, 2340 hits, 1329 runs, 960 RBIs, 379 stolen bases (caught 77 times), 70.5 WAR in 9057 PA
Rollins: .264/.324/.418, 95 OPS+, 231 HR, 2455 hits, 1421 runs, 936 RBIs, 470 stolen bases (caught 105 times), 47.6 WAR in 10240 PA

Larkin's easily a better hitter. Rollins was a good hitting shortstop in his prime, but a 95 OPS+ is still rather pedestrian for a SS and Larkin's 116 OPS+ ranks among the best hitting shortstops of all-time. Rollins had more extra base hits and a slightly higher ISO (.154 to .149), but Larkin was far better at hitting for average and getting on base (Rollins' career high .349 OBP in 2008 would have been the 6th worst of Larkin's career). Both were outstanding baserunners. Rollins does come out ahead in Rfield (+43 to +18).

...except he wasn't.

Smith: .262/.337/.328, 87 OPS+
Vizquel: .272/.336/.352, 82 OPS+

Keep in mind that while their careers overlapped, they played in pretty different eras for shortstops. SS was seen as a more defensive position during Ozzie's career than it was Omar's. Ozzie had more seasons with an OPS+ of 100 or higher and he did finish in the top 10 in OBP twice (Omar never finished in the top 10 in his league). Ozzie also stole 176 more bases while getting caught 19 fewer times.

WAR isn't even remotely close. 76.9 for Ozzie to 45.6 for Vizquel, and that's with Omar having 1235 more plate appearances.

Yup. Agree. Schilling is a perfect example of just someone easy to hate. Not just because of his politics. Or it is but he was really outspoken about it.

But he is a clear HOFer imo. And arguably the best post season pitcher of all time.

Rolen, congrats to him. Not the most deserving but on the right side of the fence that I won’t argue. But I think what helped him the most is the position. Third base is surprisingly very weak.
