Burke and Moore are reliable....the rest not so much. Barlow isn't looking as bad as Martin and Santana. LeCllerc has zero fastball command, he's only comfortable throwing the one pitch for strikes and doesn't show any confidence at all.

Bullpen is overworked and just not good. Are there any reinforcements.....?
Most likely, not this year. Maybe Yerry Rodriguez, maybe.

I think too many bullpen games and too many very short outing by starters earlier this year has flat wore out the pen.

We need to spend on the pen this off season.

Eventually, we may get some reinforcements from starters who are moved to the pen because of better starters coming up from the minors.

From Jeff Wilson:

Martin Perez

The All-Star left-hander is not going to be traded, barring an overwhelming offer for the free-agent-to-be.

The guess here is that the Rangers and Perez’s agent have exchanged numbers that both sides saw as non-starters. They will remain amicable, Perez will continue to pitch well, and the Rangers will realize at some point in September that they need to up their offer.

If Perez reaches free agency, the Rangers will make him a qualifying offer. It will probably be around $18 million, and the Rangers would rather pay him that than the three or four years he might be seeking.

Should Perez turn down a qualifying offer and sign elsewhere, the Rangers would get a draft pick after the first round and a prospect who might be a better haul than what they feel they could get for Perez at the deadline.

Prediction: No trade, no extension.

From Jeff Wilson:

Matt Moore

This left-hander is more likely to be dealt, and the Rangers have received plenty of calls on him.

Moore has emerged as a capable reliever who can cover multiple innings, thanks to a new grip on his curveball and velocity that plays up in shorter stints than when he was a starter. No team will be burdened to take on the rest of his salary.

The Rangers won’t get too much for Moore. They traded right-hander Chris Martin in 2019 to Atlanta for left-hander Kolby Allard, a former first-round pick who hasn’t worked out.

Moore said on Saturday that he’s not really sweating out if he will be traded.

Prediction: Traded.

So the Rangers are back to low balling players. If that’s the case he will sign somewhere else and they will end up with nothing.

Uh oh!!!

From Jeff Wilson:

Joey Gallo

Boras also represents Gallo, who was traded 366 days ago to the Yankees after Boras turned down a club-friendly extension overture from the Rangers.

The deal has been a boon for the Rangers, as three of the four players acquired were on the field Saturday night. Gallo is hitting .159 with 12 home runs at a part-time player, and the Yankees just acquired Andrew Benintendi to replace Gallo.

New York is hoping to get something at the deadline for Gallo, who is owed around $4 million over the rest of the season. A story Friday said he wants to go to the Padres, but there’s no doubt that he wants to return to the Rangers.

The Rangers need an outfielder for 2023. Gallo would gladly re-sign and wouldn’t be too expensive. As much as some fans can’t stand his all-or-nothing offense, the Rangers could be interested in seeing if he can be a productive player back in Arlington.

The Yankees could use a left-handed reliever.

Prediction: Moore traded for Gallo and $2 million in cash.

From Jeff Wilson:

Controllable starting pitcher

The price for a non-rental starting pitcher soared Friday as the Mariners acquired Reds right-hander Luis Castillo for their No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 prospects, plus a throw-in. Castillo can be a free agent after next season.

So, it would seem reasonable to expect teams to seek more than that for pitchers who come with more than 1 1/2 years of club control, and that’s the kind of pitcher the Rangers are seeking. Miami right-hander Pablo Lopez ad Tigers left-hander Tarik Skobal fit that mold.

It’s debatable whether either is better than Castillo, so maybe neither would come at Castillo’s price tag. The cost, though, would still be hefty, and the Rangers don’t need to make a move now with the 2022 postseason realistically out of reach.

An offseason trade would accomplish the same thing, and probably for less.

Prediction: Rangers do not acquire a young starter.

I have so much more respect for Jeff Wilson's take on this than some of the other local media's takes.

Knowing our FO this could happen. Why do we need an OF who can't hit? IMO we are in good shape in the OF at least thru 2023.

I agree with Wilson’s takes except for the gallo crap.

the rangers need to figure out a way to extend Perez if they don’t trade him. Letting him walk for nothing is a loser-ish move the old front office used to allow and we need to show the fan base that things are going to be different this time by resigNing him.

there is no urgency to acquire a pitcher as we won’t be in the playoff hunt. The mariners have indeed driven the price up for pitchers in the short term. We should be able to sign or trade for one in the offseason at a lower cost.

Gallo is a waste of time. I thought we were done with these Banny type swing for the fences / boom or bust type players.

You're right about the Gallo deal.
Just don't see the need to bring him back. He has the same issues now that he's always had. With Adolis in RF, Leody in CF and most likely LF being Smith or Duran going forward there's just not room for him. As a defensive fourth outfielder? Eh, at worst White can fill that role going forward.
if not one of these prospects like Thompson

Gallo is a baffoon. The only one bigger is the FO if they bring him back.

Moore for Gallo is stupid. We already have a shit BP. Why not re-sign a guy that is reliable, vs. bring back a guy that isn't reliable, except defensively in RF

or sign a FA pitcher that doesn't cost you anything, prospect wise and allows you to do a short term deal while you find out whether or not some of the youngsters can come up and succeed at the MLB level, next year

The Rangers don’t need another outfielder. The especially don’t need Gallo. Woody doesn’t need another reason not to play the younger players. If Gallo comes here he will be in left field and Calhoun will be at DH everyday.
