Wow! Lots of story lines in there... Bonds and Clemens' final year? ARod & Big Papi's first year?

I think Clemens & Bonds finally get in... Rodriguez & Ortiz both fall short because of the steroid not-sees....

Schilling & Sosa fall well short...

I hope Schilling, Clemens, and Bonds all get in on their last try. Not holding my breath though.

Bobby Abreu

I think Abreu deserves a serious look. At a minimum, I think he's one of the better players outside the Hall.

.291/.395/.475, 128 OPS+, 400 stolen bases (caught 128 times), 2470 hits, 574 doubles, 288 home runs, 60.2 WAR, 28.3 WAA. He also had thirteen consecutive seasons with 150+ games played from 1998-2010. He played 142 in 2011.

He had a nice run from 98-04 where he hit .308/.416/.525 with a 142 wRC+, hit 163 home runs and stole 203 bases. Only four players had more WAR over that span (Bonds, A-Rod, Rolen, Andruw Jones).

I think Schilling will make it this year. Maybe Clemens/Bonds. I also think Rolen is going to come pretty close and make it either in 2023 or 2024.

edit: oh yeah, I could see Ortiz getting in on his first try.

Ortiz will likely come up short this year, but should get in eventually. Schilling likely won't get in via the writers. He has a chance with the veteran's committee. Bonds and Clemens probably won't make it.

Morneau and Lincecum will likely fall off the ballot. Nathan might get 5%, as he was as good a closer as there was (other than Rivera) during his career.

Then the Hall has no meaning of consequence

Bonds and Clemens belong in the Hall, but the voters won't put them in -- in my opinion. The veterans committee will be the ones that put them in. And their plaques should indicate what they did and the choices they made.

Agreed. He just didn't last long enough. Had he held up later in his career, he would probably have a stronger case.

Didn't Schilling have a temper tantrum last year and say he no longer wants in?

I think the writers should oblige him.

I think that they will. Bitching about how the writers have it out for him because he's a conservative (that's not the reason, he's just a racist, bigoted asshole) is not a way to get what you want.

If he doesn't ever go in, it's not some kind of tragedy either. He's a borderline candidate as it is.

Most of the early baseball stars were racists. Cap Anson only played a game with a black man on the other team because he realized that if he didn't play, he would forfeit his pay for the game.
Ty Cobb was terribly racist while he played.
Both of these guys are in the Hall and were icons of the game for over a generation.

Both of those guys were and are slam dunk players.

Different eras of media coverage as well. Both of those players would have their detractors if they played today, and if they were as outspoken about their racist views, they would face backlash.

Schilling isn't even close to a slam dunk in the realm of Anson or Cobb. Even If he weren't a racist prick, I wouldn't have any problem with him not getting in. He defines borderline.

And Schilling is on the wrong side of the border... Just because other borderline players got in doesn't mean the bar should be lowered...

I think if the likes of Jack Morris and Catfish Hunter are in, then Schilling should be in too.

And he would be, if he wasn't such a raging moron.

28th all-time among SP in JAWS, ahead of HOFers like Halladay/Glavine/Smoltz/Mussina/Palmer/Marichal to name a few.

He had a pretty strong peak from 1996-2004:

141-81 (on some pretty lousy Phillies teams), 3.23 ERA, 141 ERA+, 2007.2 IP, 63 complete games, 1.08 WHIP, 1761 hits allowed, 222 HR allowed, 397 BB, 2127 K's, 58.5 WAR

If the Steroid in the Bay (Bonds) & Roger the Roider (Clemens) get into the HOF Cooperstown will be a complete joke. Same with A-Roid. They are three of the biggest cheaters from the **Steroid Era** of the game.

And I know cheating has been part of baseball forever. But those three to me are the main figures of the outright illegal assault on the record books.
