On a semi related note..
Duke gets signed to JAX practice squad...a team who recognizes that without their #1 pick they needed a similar guy. First move Urban Meyer has made that I appluad.

And the Ravens, who publicly are perfectly content with their RB depth chart, just hosted LeVeon Bell for a visit. They also attempted to claim Freeman off waivers before the Panthers beat them to it. Someone is getting added there
And speaking of Freeman...Ravens hosted him too. And he's about one step away from being Peyton Barber himself.

Practice squad seems like a good place for a RB who can move into a backup RB role if the starter or backup goes down. Problem is big-name vets aren't going to sign to a practice squad.

And the special teams coach needs dudes, too. Like 25-30 snaps in a game with 11 each time. Jacobs and Drake had zip special teams snaps between them last year.

I hadn't thought about this before, so I took a look: non-linemen/kickers (RB/WR/TE/CB/S) had about 2300 special snaps for LV last year.

They lost more than half of those snaps with players no longer with the team (mostly Derek Carrier, Jeff Heath, Erik Harris, Isaiah Johnson and Devontae Booker) and replaced them with players with a combined SIX special teams snaps last year.

Six!

Until they added Barber, who brought another 130.

Raiders also tried for Freeman and missed him. 159 special teams snaps last year.

I don't think Peyton Barber is ever going to be the long-term starter or backup in LV. If Jacobs or Drake goes down, somebody else will come in to be #2 after a week or so. Trey Ragas maybe, but more likely one of those big ancient unsigned names that are flying around.

Now that I drafted Gaskin in the Barbarian league I'm hoping he remains in the role he had last year. It doesn't seem that Brown did anything to change it IMO. Guess what has me worried just a hair is that the Dolphins seem open to the idea of replacing him/changing his role despite not drafting a RB. I give Gaskin this season before the Dolphins quit screwing around and draft a RB1 next year.

Well, I hardly said this was the only boneheaded move by Gruden, just the most recent. In addition to the gutting of the ST, he also gutted the oline and signed 2 WR's they'll never use, one of which already got cut. And that just one year after drafting 2, very high, that weren't used either

The guy is is frustrating. It'd be one thing if any of his weird moves paid off, i could get on board,, but they arent. They even wasted that bounty of draft picks they got by trading Cooper and Mack

Like I said to TKO..if we're talking about an IR situation where whomever is taking over for either Jacons or Drake, long term..than it makes little difference. Little to no production from Barber is only slightly worse than sub mediocre production from what's out there. If that's the scenario we're talking about than it doesn't matter. I'm talking about being able to contribute in general, handful if plays here or there, get thrown in in a pinch...that's where someone with some juice, or someone with slightly better ability to grind makes a difference. If that guy us the THE guy at any given point, might as well start prepping for '22

And now we know why the Ravens brought people in..
Justice Hill torn achillies..might as well consider his career over. Bummer.

Now...will they sign someone who could actually threaten Gus's workload..even in the slightest...or someone like Elijah Holyfield?

Or it means Gus the Bus gets even a bigger workload then anticipated. I'm excited for him this season.

kinda like the raiders situation, ravens need someone to play ST snaps. you think anyone out there that will threaten Gus' workload and take ST snaps?

I don't even think there are guys out there willing to take ST snaps that would threaten Ty'Son's RB2 role for the ravens at this point.

team needs outweigh talent when you are talking about end of roster RBs. You don't pay up for a premium has-been when you want someone to grind out the dirty ST snaps.

But outside of one who returns, you can get your 3rd-4th TE, or 5th LB, or 4th safety to play the exact thing on ST as a RB does. So unless he's gonna return, it's really not a must.
And unlike the Raiders, the Ravens next RB will be their #3, not necessarily a ST must, and will definitely be called upon to contribute offensively.

Part of my biggest issue is the the Raiders don't need a 4th RB, period, they need depth in the LB's and secondary, they need OL depth. So if they are going to use a roster spot on a 4th RB..I would hope he could contribute more than being a kick/punt cover man.

Uh... does somebody need to talk to their strength and conditioning coach?

someone has to take the handful of rushes and receptions they were expecting out of Justice Hill this year, lol

I think people are really underestimating Ravens' de-valuing of the RB position. Literally anyone can do what they are asking, so why spend extra money on a name when there's practice squad guys that will produce similarly?

Agreed. They have a system & OL in place that will make do with just about anyone. Don't sleep on Ty'Son Williams. But out of the vet FAs, I think Freeman fits the best. Bell & Gurley aren't the zone-runners they used to be.

Neither is Freeman..lol.
None of the "name" guys out there are great fits for the one cut and go style any longer. But they're all about as good as Gus..and he gets it done to a point.

Honestly, if what's being said about Williams is true, I wouldn't be shocked to see him be the main guy at some point, or at least just a straight 50/50 split

I just think Freeman has a little more left in the tank than those other guys... But that's mainly because I haven't been paying as close attention to him lol. From what I saw of Bell & Gurley last year... And both have been "worked out" numerous times this offseason and never signed. I think both of those guys are pretty much done unless someone hits a panic button.

Agreed on the 50/50 split. I tried to stay away from Gus in drafts... But I did grab him a few times and am hoping to at least trade him before long lol. Fingers crossed he has a few great games early on.

He might, it's a tough call between those "washed up" vets, as to who has more left in the tank.
If it's strictly just going by the most recent numbers, then it's easily Gurley and AP, they easily outproduced all the veterans being discussed. Freeman owns some very lackluster recent numbers, lower than Bells by far.
If it's an eye test..my eye test says Gurley...but common sense is that his knee will eventually make him a zero mid season, in which case my eye test says Bell, but Bell has his own issues. My eye test says Freeman is pretty much done, but I do think he'd make more sense than a Barber, Alf, Gore or McCoy. But that's just my eye test. Given that I did grab him in multiple leagues when he signed last year, I did pay some attention to him, but granted, I didn't exactly "study" him.

Gurley is such a tricky one, cause he was performing well the first half of the season last year, but as everyone knows his knee can no longer hold up to the rigors of the NFL.
I don't think his knee will ever get better, only worse - which is my assumption, but I also think NFL team would've signed him by now if that wasn't the case.

If I had to guess, he's been contemplating retirement when he started getting ruled out of games last year, but we'll see.
