Washington Wolverines. Wildebeests? Nah. Warhawks? Eagles vs Warhawks.......
I submitted the name "Warhawks" with an updated golden lance on the helmet and those 70th-anniversary uniforms. No stripes on the helmet either. Good call! :suds:

It did, but to be fair almost everyone used it in early America__ the1800's__ including our people. With the advent of film followed by television the term was used exclusively in a negative manner as noted by anyone who has ever watched a western or film of that nature. Protests, lawsuits, and direct appeals naturally followed but like every other group seeking equal treatment, dismissal, little or no reports/coverage of such protests and often times, retribution was given a pass with a "legal" blind eye. These protests rarely made the news and/or were drowned out with feigning acceptance by native Americans as non native Americans depicted them in such ventures.

BTW; I remember that meeting with Edward Bennet Williams but it happened in 1972. So, protests go way back to early film and television but @R.J. MacReady is also correct because they were taken more seriously, had more in-depth reporting on them which renewed interest and greater public knowledge about some of the country's shit that had been swept under its collective rug beginning in the 1990's.

According to linguist Ives Goddard of Smithsonian, Redskin was coined by the “Indians” in their dealings with the white man.

Even if true, how does this change the fact, excuse away, or reasonably explain that the word was usurped and used to denigrate, dismiss, and caricaturize a people?

Not politics dad but I will stop if you think it is. Here is the sad fact. People do not read or learn history but are quick to point out what they think is an indiscretion without knowing what the fuck they are talking about. Read this lick and tell me where the indiscretion is.

The untold story of the real 'Aunt Jemima' and the fight to preserve her legacy

Without knowing you might assume this was a slight or indiscretion. It was not. Some folks watched TV in the 60s and 70s and decided Redskin was a slight. Meanwhile lily white Irish kids like me wanted to be the Indian when we played cowboys and Indians. So much so that I read everything I could find about Indians so I would understand their culture and who they were. Pretty bad ass actually. Now I am told I am a white privileged racist. It is just a shame that so many see bad intent in places that was not the intention.

Oh well, these are just a couple of reasons I am getting old and have a limited time watching people make fools of themselves because they are not educated.

I will leave it at "this is why I would still like to see the Indian culture in some way stay part of our name." HTTW!!

The Washington Woke's

It might take some work to get her to fit on the helmet.

Any word can be changed. If I looked at you and called you a “fucking apple,” would we stop using the word apple? Of course not, because I could also say you are as healthy as an apple. The context in which a word is used is all that matters.

Now, would you ever name your prized possession, an NFL franchise, after something you hate? Hell no. Did Indians wear headdresses? Of course they did. Did they look pretty bad ass? Hell yes they did.

Aren't we talking about this particular word? So I'll ask you once more, Even if true, how does this change the fact, excuse away, or reasonably explain that the word was usurped and used to denigrate, dismiss, and caricaturize a people?

Are you attempting to say that this word was not used for that purpose despite overwhelming provable evidence? Don't ask for it either, you have the means to watch tv already.

BTW; calling me a "fucking apple" doesn't change the word, just your opinion of me and yes, you would stop using the word in that manner.

The entire point of my post is words, names, etc. are being changed to fit the narrative people want it to fit for their side of the argument. Apple can mean anything, it is the context that makes people think it is positive or negative. People have insisted I am a racist for saying Redskin when nothing can be further from the truth. I'd be more worried about the person calling me a racist being racist than me who never once had that thought.

Point two is we are obliterating history to fit the narrative some want. Isn't history supposed to be what helps us from making the same mistakes over and over again?

Enough of that. I am not here for this. I am here for football and I would love to see the team get a new name such as Warriors, Renegades ... hell I would even take Shaman or something that reflects the history of the team.

The word has been used both ways. What is wrong with the caricature of our mascot? I find him to be completely honorable. Who is being dismissed and by whom?

I am saying the word has been used both ways.

I like Redwolves or Warriors but just for fun trying to imagine the announcers saying the names how about The Washington Reds and The Dallas Cowboys next right here on Fox
