And curious why Danny hates Shabazz when he is the best player and value right now

I said earlier that hayward could sign elsewhere. The Pacers screwed themselves trying to dump garbage on the Celtics that the C's didn't want. Now the Pacers are really in a bind because they've still got Turner and McDermott and warren and Olipado and they can't move an inch. The Knicks might help but they have about ten forwards and need guards desperately. I heard that they dumped $40+ M in salaries but no names or specifics.

There are still rumors buzzing around about the Celtics moving Kemba Walker. The Bulls are the team that keeps being talked about and the C's would get Zach LaVine and Thaddeus Young.

NESN is reporting that the C's may move Marcis Smart today.

The networks are legit, but you have to wonder if they're just trying to keep people tuned in. I certainly can't see both Smart and Walker being shipped out. LaVine is a swing G/F and could easily take Kemba's spot and improve the defense. There will be a ton of crap competing with the Patriots for air time.

Updated depth chart:

1 - Kemba Walker
1 - Jeff Teague
1 - Tremont Waters
1/2 - Carson Edwards
1/2 - Payton Pritchard
1/2/3 - Marcus Smart
2/3 - Aaron Nesmith
2/3 - Romeo Langford
2/3 - Javonte Green
2/3/4 - Jayson Tatum
2/3/4 - Jaylen Brown
3/4 - Semi Ojeleye
3/4/5 - Grant Williams
4/5 - Daniel Theis
5 - Tristan Thompson
5 - Robert Williams III
5 - Tacko Fall

* Bolded are presumed starters

Feeling much better now after the Hayward loss and slow start to our FA.

Tristan Thompson joins with Theis to give the C's one of the more mobile duos at the 5 spot in the NBA. A very good Boston defense will be even better.

Teague was a necessary addition that addresses (to some extent) both our lack of veteran guard depth and our lack of bench offense. He's not perfect, but he can run a 2nd team offense and get people involved.

The main weakness on the team is now the hole left by Hayward's departure... that high level scoring and play making from the wing position behind Tatum and Brown.

I wouldn’t have minded bazemore for the biannual exception.

but sounds like Danny is trying to swing a double sign and trade with Hayward to Charlotte, batum and picks to Sacto and bog to Boston.

i doubt that gets done. But it’s something that would solve a lot of the issues left.

another power forward would be nice too

Thinking a little bit more about where the Celtics are right at the present moment...

... Ainge and co. should be thinking win now, go for the championship now.

The Eastern Conference is as open as it is gonna be... Miami is very good, but also appears more concerned with the future than they are with the present... Milwaukee has Giannis, but has kinda fumbled their off-season... other contenders such as Philly and the Nets have a lot of potential but also a high degree of unknown...

... in short, it's likely gonna be more competitive in the future... so strike now.

Kemba isn't gonna get any younger, and Tatum and Brown are entering their young prime. Everybody at the top of this line-up has great experience with each other. Now is the time.

By my estimation, we're one veteran wing scorer away from going from a fringe championship contender to being a bona fide championship contender.

So if there is a move to be made... the Celtics should do it. Even if it means losing a future draft pick or two. The Celtics should lean in to the present opportunity.

I'm not sure exactly what that deal looks like... but something like the Bogdanovic trade idea (double S&T) is exactly what I'm talking about... make the splash now and go all-in.

We'll see if Ainge has any magic up his sleeve.

Bog signed an offer sheet with ATL that idea is dead.

best move is just bae Wayne Ellington to add another shooter.

man’s hope that Tatum becomes kawhi and brown becomes butler

I think there's a good chance that you guys are more than fringe contenders now...but it depends on Tatum and Brown. Both have been steadily improving and have made great strides since their rookie seasons. Now would be a good time for them to take that one more step to become true star level players. If that happens (and it seems likely), you are legit contenders, imo.

Getting the vet wing scorer you're talking about would obviously be good for the C's. But even if you don't, another step forward by Tatum and Brown would make it less necessary than it appears now.

their best chance to do that is to still turn GH into a trade exception.

then they can at least get their own oubre type wing vet who can help (not the same player, just a non star asset who can play especially when one of Brown or Tatum needs a breather).

We largely agree... yes, if the C's are gonna have a good hope of winning a championship:
  • Tatum has to take that next step to bonafide superstar...
  • Brown needs to keep maximizing his potential and be aggressive...
My point was more that, looking at the roster as currently constructed, there is a pretty big hole in terms of bench scoring.

I guess it's within the realm of possibility that either a Carsen Edwards or a Aaron Nesmith or a Romeo Langford blossoms into a consistent bench scorer immediately... (all of them showed that potential at the college level)... but that doesn't seem like a possibility that's great to depend on... not for a real championship contender.

Boston doesn't have to act right now (before the season). If the right deal isn't available at the moment, the C's could wait and see how the young guys shake out and then have an eye towards the trade deadline in-season...

... but something probably needs to be done at some point, and I personally wouldn't mind if the C's dream a little bigger...

Yep. Kind of what I was getting at. But you stated it better. No need to rush just to fill a spot that doesn't need to be filled right away. You may be able to get someone better close to the trade deadline than you could get right now. Like you said...dream a little bigger.

Dreaming REALLY big would be getting a massive trade exception from turning Hayward into a S&T and then following that with a trade for a player who is in the 15 to 20 million dollar contract range...

It would take the C's surrendering multiple picks (in all probability)... and it would cost a bundle... but it is a spicy possibility.

Like I said earlier, I don't know who they could get this way...

It does sound like the Hornets just had to outbid not only the Pacers but the Celtics as well...both were offering 4 year-$100-$108M I am hearing just not $120 like the Hornets.

pacers needed to sign and trade.

It's a rumor but Zach Lowe is a pretty reliable source so

“You want to clown the contract?” Lowe said on his “The Lowe Post” podcast. “That’s fine. Just know it’s not like the Pacers and the Celtics were offering $80 million. They weren’t offering $120 million. But my best intel is something like $105 million, $108 million, $102 million, $110 million.

I would’ve rather Queen and Mason Jones
Apparently, Tremont Waters was the G League Rookie of the Year last year. I didn't know that.

I never gave him much of chance... too short, and lacks elite quickness... bad combination... but whenever I see him play he always acquits himself better than I would have thought possible. He has savvy, is a good passer, and has elite defensive instincts...

... I still don't know if Waters will ever amount to a NBA rotational player, but he's a great kid to root for.

Tacko is just the best kid ever and a great story. If Waters is too short, then Tacko is just too damn tall... but he's also a great kid to root for... I'm happy they're both back for another go-round.

Yeah.

Tacko is never going to be a regular NBA rotation player. But every locker room needs quality people at the end of the bench. And it doesn’t hurt to have a 7’6” practice player either.
