Good analysis and detailing as to what went right and what went wrong this season.

I have to wonder tho if the initial statement in the final section, the team needs is correct: The White Sox are rumored to be one of the teams anxious to do some spending this offseason. Really?

After Jerry bails La Russa out of the drunk tank - will there be enough money left?

**Filing that under the label OUCH**
The broader point is talk is cheap, but when the Sox went after Machado and Harper - they made headlines, but didn't sign anyone (even though they hired Machado's best friend and his cousin).

LOL, I knew where you were going with that. And yes, talk is indeed cheap. But I suppose we do have to be a bit fair here (just a bit). They did actually try to sign Machado, altho it was reported that Jerry demanded a sizable portion of the contract offer be back-ended, which pretty much sunk our chance from the getgo. I don't think we ever got into serious discussions with Harper's agent. A little pokin' & proddin' perhaps, that's about it. Now OTOH, Jerry did open the checkbook for Wheeler to the tune of $7m more than what he ended up accepting from Philly. I think I'd be more inclined to agree that maybe we would have been one of the more aggressive teams this offseason had it not been for the covid nightmare. It put just about every team (apparently except the Mets) out of whack. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'll give you Wheeler as an honest attempt for a get - that hurt. The Sox sure could have used him last year.

i am skeptical enough to believe he had no intention of signing machado. wasn't hard to make the offer he made knowing it would not be accepted. but it looked good, didn't it?
as for wheeler? i'm just as skeptical there tho i have no proof other than knowing jr is a jerk. don't know much about the offer compared to the one he took. does anyone?

But we also have to remember Mingo that had we signed Wheeler, we likely would not have signed Keuchel.....and he turned out kinda ok. :D Also, maybe with that huge Wheeler contract, Jerry wouldn't have been so open to the extensions for Moncada, Robert, and Jimenez. One of those things we'll always have to wonder about.

Can't argue about Machado. But as for Wheeler, there were about 2 dozen articles, including one on the White Sox official website, confirming that Wheeler turned down an offer of $125m with the Sox for the same length of term as he signed with Philly for $118m.

i've no doubt there was an offer. have you seen the details of that offer?

Just a quick google confirms a couple of links showing the Sox made a greater offer, altho you won't see the actual $125m number listed. I believe it was during one of Q&A sessions on the Sox website that Scott Merkin occasionally puts up where he actually stated the official offer of $125m. I'm too lazy tho to continue searching.

from what i've read wheeler had no intention of signing with the sox. did the sox know this? i just read an article about wheeler and his hopes the mets would match an offer etc and the sox weren't even mentioned in it. why is that?
as far as i can deduce, the sox knew they weren't going to get wheeler.

Don't believe the details were ever reported, but nowhere did I read in all those articles that the Sox tried to do some shifty accounting like back-ending a large portion of it, such as what they did in Machado's case. Wheeler himself said he received a better offer, but wanted to stay on the East Coast. That's why I'll agree with criticism of Reinsdorf's penchant for throwing nickels around like they were manhole covers (thanks Dick Butkus for that great expression), but not in the Wheeler situation. That was legit.

Well then they would have looked mighty foolish had Wheeler accepted the offer. Kinda think you're grasping for straws here iddy.

like i said, i'm skeptical enough to be very doubtful to think it was a bonafide serious attempt.

that's ALWAYS the gamble when you want to appear like you're dealing in good faith but aren't really. had it been real and been accepted then i imagine they would have lived with it.

Look, I'm no insider to the workings and goings-on when it comes to contract negotiations. I'm just some schmuck who sits behind a computer and acts like he knows shit. But it seems quite reasonable to assume that a legit offer was put in writing. I'm sure Wheeler's agent, or any other agent for that matter would not have it any other way.
