Chris Chelios: Chris Chelios the greatest American hockey player ever - chicagotribune.com

I agree with this guy, even if he is a filthy Chicago reporter.

I hate Chris Chelios. I HAAAAAATED him when he was a Blackhawk. When he was traded to the Wings, it was like showing up to church on Sunday with Satan at the pulpit. I tolerated him on the Wings, because of his greatness, but it never felt right. Think Chris Pronger, Matt Cooke, Steve Ott, and the Westboro Baptist Church all rolled into one.

He probably should have won a few more Norrises than he did, but he was never flashy like Bourque, Leetch, Coffey, or Blake. I'll gladly listen to arguments for Mullen, Modano (God I would love to say a Michigan man is the greatest of all time, I would really love to say it), or Lafontaine, but to me it's always been Chelios.

What do you guys think?

I'm partial to Joey Mullen...he may not be considered THE single greatest American born player ever....although he is definatly up there....but he is my favorite. One of my favorite players ever, actually..

I'm a big fan of Joey Mullen as well, but I have to give the nod to Chelios, he was an elite defenceman for a long time first with the Habs and the Hawks. There are a number of guys in the mix though (and that includes Modano, Lalalalalafontaine, and Mike Richter).

Edit: Throw Phil Housley into the mix as well.

The pool of US talent is certainly deeper than it's ever been, but we're still waiting for that star power from days of yore to break through. Outside of Miller, I don't see anyone who can match up with the old days Leetch, Roenick, Tkachuk, Chelios, Modano, Lafontaine, Chelios, and Housley. Hopefully Kessel, Kesler, Backes, Oshie, Parise, Ryan, Suter, Bogosian, and the Johnsons go on to prove me wrong.

Modano carried his team for 15 years.
not sure you can say that about the others (maybe lafontaine)

best right now is between kesler and kessel.
i'd much rather have kesler. in beast-mode, he isamazing to watch.
i think kessel is way over-reaching right now

He carried his team during the lean years, but in his prime he also had Sydor, Belfour, Hull, Niewy, Carbo, Zubov, Chewbacca, and a pretty good supporting cast. After the Cup years Dallas still had some good teams with Modano on the decline.

I think in Phil's case, If you throw that much gas on someone they are bound to catch on fire. I can't really think of too many others that would be more fed up than Kessel coming into this season.
