Its a complicated issue that I dont think a lot of people understand, they really cant just do that. They can TRY to pull out of the conference, but its not a battle they are going to win without losing a shit ton of money. Basically its likely all talk.

As much as id love Ohio State to tell the big 10 to get fucked and play whoever they can get this season......its really unlikely.

Who says they are "pulling out of the conference"?

The Big 10 is not providing them a schedule of 9 teams to play.

Are the standard 3 OOC games "pulling out of the conference"? No
Does the Big 10 assign those 3 OOC games? No
Could Nebraska or any other team schedule those OOC games during a buy week of their basic Big 10 schedule? Yes

There had better be something in the Big 10 statutes regarding 'cancellation of the conference schedule' and that a team must also cancel it's 3 OOC games.

If there is, so be it. Then I'd support the Big 10 on it, and Nebraska should indeed stay home.

If there's not, and the Big 10 sues, then Nebraska should seek other games, litigate, and ask for attorney fees.

When Warren was asked specifically by Yahoo Sports if Nebraska could play college football this fall, he gave an answer that would make his hardline predecessor nod with approval.

“No,” he said, firmly. “Not and be a member of the Big Ten Conference.”

As stupid as they are for cancelling the season. You can be damn sure they know a lot more than we know when it comes to protecting their interests.

To me, the question is, what can the conference do if the team schedules games against other teams?
Claim a breach of contract, seek damages from Nebraska.

Ultimately, Nebraska would end up out of the richest league, and $100 million poorer for it for the exit fee.

They already do "schedule games against other teams"

Every Big 10 team "schedules games against other teams"

They schedule 3 of them outside of the Big 10 conference schedule.

They get their conference schedule from the Big 10 offices and schedule 3 more games in open weeks.

The Big 10 has had ZERO problems with that policy EVER.

Well that ends all that rumor mill nonsense then. Nebraska will not play.
yeah all this talk about them playing for another conference for one season or now if they can play 3 games as it's OOC schedule is nonsense. They are signed to a GOR which all THREE of it's media tiers are owned by the conference. They aren't the Big 12 who just owns the tier 1 and tier2 rights.. while every school owns it's tier3 rights..Texas has the LHN, ou has it's fox deal that provides one ppv game.. WV has it's own network as well.

B16 pays really well and for Nebraska to attempt to walk away from it is cutting your nose to spite your face.

Well you do know the B16 OWNS all of the rights? Including the OOC games which are tied to it's tier 2 and 3 deals..which the conference owns.

"They don't know what the results will be if they play"
"They don't know what litigation there might be"

They don't know what the results will be when the team boards an airplane to their game destination either.
Is there a chance of a plane crash? Yep

There are chances of permanent injuries EVERY TIME a player takes the field in practice or a game. There are chances of them choking on a chicken bone at the training table.

They claim they can throw you out of the conference. Legally, I don't think so. If Ohio State did it, the Big 10 wouldn't dare kick out their marquee program.

Oh, hell no.

Who is claiming the Big 10 can throw Nebraska out of the conference?

Do you have a link to someone official?

I can only assume Nebraska trying to carry on with a season when the conference told them no would somehow be grounds for expulsion. Legally.

I'm not a lawyer though. So who knows.

I would love to see them challenge the conference, then get smacked in the courtroom and to set an example, either force them out while still taxing them, or letting them stay and keep them as the whipping boy.

It's interesting, but I don't think the B10 would want that image...especially if they don't end up playing in the spring. They would have told a university that they cannot have the $50 million a year they were promised in the tv right deal, but they cannot do anything to make up that loss.

On top of that, they cannot allow their players to play football in the fall, and the conference will not try and make accommodations for those players to go play elsewhere this fall.

The bottom line, from my perspective, if they go sue Nebraska for trying to play football outside the conference this fall, they would look TERRIBLE. It would hurt future recruiting, and would set a bad precedent. Again, just my two cents.

Well said.

The bold is the biggest issue as Frost is already on record saying it would be detrimental to the players to play in spring and fall of 2021.

That would also apply to playing a fall 2020 season followed by a spring 2021 season.

yeah i see that but.. I doubt Nebraska is as wanted as posters and twitter accounts feel they are. If this was ND, I could be persuaded in seeing something like this happen where a conference would move heaven and earth to include them in their schedule. But Nebraska? Not even a competitive Nebraska at that..

Well then. Going forward, the Big 10 needs to take away all teams rights in scheduling 3 OOC games per season.

"All Big 10 teams will play 12 in-conference games unless an OOC game (Michigan/Notre Dame) is scheduled by the conference".

Me either.

That's why I say 'patience'.

I'm sure attorneys from both sides are scouring the statutes.

If there were something that directly says the conference can cancel all or any individual member's football season "for any reason" we'd already know that.

That would be low hanging fruit, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.
