The league (and NBC) probably wants two American teams in the game, but this game just screams Leafs - Wings to me...

Maybe the NHL will have the Wings go to DC in 2013 in plans for them hosting the event soon after. This seems to be the pattern they use. If I had to guess now I'd say...

DC - 2013 (vs. Wings?)
NY - 2014 (vs. Hawks or Kings?)
Detroit - 2015 (vs. Pens?)

Wings vs Avs? Avs need a boost to their fan base this would get some eyes on their team again.

but I think Wings vs Leafs would be good ratings anyway. its classic and both are original 6.

I wouldn't have a problem with Detroit hosting the winter classic. My question would be who would they play? It would have to be a team that hasn't been in the winter classic yet.

San Jose would be fun.

It's not Bettman. It's what NBC wants (and contracted for) and it makes sense. The cities of the participating teams have a massive spike in ratings compared to most other cities, often posting a number 4-5 times that of your average city. Well okay, to your average Northeast city. To give up a participating American franchise would mean a very significant dip in ratings.

Canada has a corresponding outdoor game that those teams will get to participate in more often than American teams will.

I wonder if the NHL should start considering making the Classic a double header or something on back-to-back nights. One team hosts another and then you have two teams play on neutral ice. They go to so much trouble to set up the stadium/ice/etc and the demand for tickets is off the charts. It might be kind of cool to have 4 teams play and then you'd be able to push more midwest, southern, and western teams into the mix. Day game and night game. Would be pretty cool.

i think regardless of who it is. the Stanley Cup Champs should be in the winter Classic every year. Not necessarily in their city as not all cities can host it and like a all star game it shoudl move around as much as possible but it would be great to promote the Champs in it and then have a new team face them. This should also replace the all star game IMO. but I understand the all star game is to get the business/corporate sponsors some serious show time with the games best. I still hate that game

we have only had 2 heritage classics since this all began which is what 5 years now? or 4? we dont get it everyyear and it seems to be bettmans choice when.

Not grounds for a "rivalry", they don't play each other enough. If thats the case, any team playing any team is considered a rivalry.
