Seriously, this team sold it’s collective soul. Villalona was just the down payment. We have been making regular payments ever since...

On a serious note, this would really suck. I had high hopes for him this year and was really interested to see what this new coaching staff could do for him.

Hopefully it's not as serious as it sounds.
It seems he was having a good spring too (after finishing 2019 strong). I wonder, how often has a tight feeling elbow NOT resulted in serious surgery? I would guess the percentage is low. Hopefully, he is in that low percentage category.

Can someone kill Dr Andrews? Every time his name is mentioned, bad things happen.

From sfgiants.com:
"Hard-throwing reliever Jandel Gustave, 2015 first-round Draft pick Chris Shaw and infielder Kean Wong were among the 17 players dispatched to Minor League camp, which officially opened on Friday.
Infielder Abiatal Avelino, right-hander Melvin Adon and left-handers Sam Selman and Conner Menez were also optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Ten non-roster players -- right-handers Sean Hjelle, Tyler Cyr, Jake Jewell, Luis Madero, Trey McNutt, Sam Wolff and Raffi Vizcaino, left-hander Sam Moll, catcher Ricardo Genoves and outfielder Jamie Westbrook -- were reassigned to Minor League camp."

I am a bit surprised that Gustave got sent down so quickly. He looked good last year. Not surprised, though, that Shaw got a quick hook. Didn't know what to expect on Wong.

Assuming Beede is shut down for the rest of camp, the team is down to 53 players (26 pitchers, 5 catchers, 12 infielders and 10 outfielders left) in spring training. The average age of the reamining players in camp is 29 years old. The only two left in age under 25 are Webb and Bart (and we know Bart will eventually go down). This is going to be one old team when camp breaks.

Edit: Hey, this is my 10,000th post here! I've been pretty busy these past 4 and a half years, considering I think I've post all but one time only in the Giants' forum (you all seem normal compared to the other posters on this forum).

Kapler just had another TV interview. Did not cut it short this time.

I think all of us here understand what he's talking about already, but he had some pretty thoughtful things to say that many casual fans may not know about. I think he's going to grow on a lot of people.

Some interesting Springs so far from non-roster vets like Cahill and Ruf. So far looks like they both deserve a roster spot, plus the Giants will need to clear one for a catcher, whoever it may be, and the you assume Sandoval as well.

Could be a Chris Marrero, here's hoping he's an Eric Thames
That is exactly what I was thinking (the new Marrero). And has Sandoval taken any reps in the field yet? If not, why would the Giants carry a DH to start the season? Seems like a waste of a 26th spot on this team.
And there is this news too:
Not like he was going to make the team but still a bummer for him. He'd likely had gotten a chance sometime in the season, provided he didn't fall flat on his face in AAA.

One thing that is fun about a last place team is the wide open competition for so many roster spots. Who is going to rise to the challenge and earn a roster spot? For the bullpen, I had penciled in Gott, Gustave, Coonrod, J Garcia, Blevins, Vincent, Rogers and Watson to start the season. Gustave is already out. I had thought he'd earned a spot with his 2019 season but a poor spring must have unearned it. Watson has yet to throw a pitch in spring and may begin the year on the IL. Both Blevins and Vincent look awful as NRIs and will probably be cut soon. Gott may get a dfa if he doesn't right the ship soon. And Coonrod may well earn a ticket to Sacramento with his spring. That leaves only J Garcia and Rogers as the two guys I picked who have the best shot to make the team out of camp.
So who makes the bullpen cuts? Andrew Triggs, Carlos Navas, Trevor Oaks and Rodolfo Martinez have looked good but are probably still outside candidates due to their NRI status (only so many 40 man spots can be opened up). I think the 6 with the best opportunities are Dany Jimenez, Wandy Peralta, Tyson Ross, Enderson Franco (gulp, I said it) and 2 of the 5th starter candidates. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the FO scoops up a couple or 3 guys cut from other camps who will be old and uninspiring.
As for that 5th starter's spot, it looks like it is down to Trevor Cahill, Andrew Suarez, Dereck Rodriguez and Logan Webb. Shaun Anderson looks like he needs to go to Sacramento. Cahill looks the best, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the bullpen and either Suarez or Rodriguez making the 5th spot, with the loser in the bullpen as well. Webb will probably go to Sacramento but there is still two weeks of camp to see if he can make it.
Looking at the non-Posey catchers in camp, Bart is having the best offensive performance so far and should begin the year in Sacramento. I don't see the team making him a backup right now. Brantly is the next best and that is not saying much, with his .572 OPS. Probably going to see a late camp acquisition here at well.
Infield is extremely interesting. Both Darrin Ruf and Zach Green are having phenomenal springs so far but Ruf has the upper leg in terms of MLB experience. Solano is also hitting well as is Dubon. Flores, Sandoval and especially Yolmer Sanchez have not looked good in camp. Flores is the best of the group and he is guaranteed a spot, regardless of how he looks. Sandoval, I really hope they don't push carrying a DH type on the OP roster. He needs to finish his defensively rehab and get some minor league games in before making the roster. Sanchez needs to go. Sure, he's got a great glove but there is just not enough room on the roster for him. With a starting infield of Belt, Flores, Crawford and Longoria, that leaves 2 or 3 infield spots left (depending on whether the 26th man is in infielder or outfielder). Solano should make the team on the strength of his 2019 season and current spring numbers. Dubon should also make the team. That leaves a spot for either Ruf or Sanchez. Do you go with the offense or defense here? I'd go with Ruf. Sanchez probably has an out in his clause if he doesn't make the team and would surely exercise it, considering his options he had with other teams before signing with the Giants.
Looking at the outfielders' slash lines, Joey Rickard is having the best spring so far. I'm not sure he makes the team though. Pence, of course, will be on the roster. So will Dickerson and Yastrzemski (despite poor spring showings so far). If the Giants keep 6 infielders, that would leave room for 2 backup outfielders. I would guess, if they add Ruf to the roster, that he can fill the 5th spot. That leaves a competition between Rickard, McCarthy, Hamilton, Davis, Robinson, Guyer, Slater and Duggar for that last spot. I think Hamilton has the edge. Rickard is an NRI, McCarthy is a rookie with options and Davis, Robinson, Guyer, Slater and Duggar are all hitting worse that Hamilton.
If Ross, Cahill, a catcher, Ruf and Hamilton all make the team, then there is 4 spots on the 40 man roster that need to be opened. Aramis Garcia will surely go on the 60 day IL, so there is one spot. Trevor Gott probably gets dfa'd, opening a 2nd spot. While Tyler Beede, Tyler Anderson and Tony Watson all start the year on the IRL, I doubt any of them get placed on the 60 day (for the record, Moronta is already on the 60 day). I think Sam Selman and Keon Wong are the most likely candidates to get the dfa as well.
