Spike Lee V Knicks

I agree that the Knicks made too big a deal out of it, but when all that is stripped away, Spike was in the wrong.

Spike is wrong, but if you've being going to the Garden thru the same entrance for 20 years, can you blame him? The Knicks look like shit here.

1st...the man has been using this entrance for 20 yrs (reportedly)...it's not like the Knicks have 100s of Celebs coming to the Garden every game night. What's the big deal with letting him (or any other Celeb) use that entrance that's a regular at the games? I.E. why change the policy for a handful of people?

2nd...this one I'm not sure if I heard this right, but he was already IN the building and they asked him to leave and enter via VIP access. If, so, that had to be what ticked him off and made this into a media circus.

I don't really support special treatment for celebs (although they obviously get it). I agree the Knicks handled this like shit all the way through. I hadn't really heard the Knicks version. I'm sure Lee is embellishing a bit. Maybe he was technically in the building, but he was near the start of the corridor and they asked him to use the correct entrance. They shouldn't have done that. They should have said that going forward he needs to use the other entrance. He still would have been pissed.

If you believe they "suddenly" told him. Either way, cry me a river, you are still able to enter the building, sit court side, make free throws, trip the opposition, make a fool out of yourself but oh no, heaven forbid I can't use a certain door..... Now that's a travesty.

The Knick have the right to tell customers, all customers, how to access the building. No issue there whether I agree with the policy or not. I get the sense that it's HOW it was done that has made this a story.

Whether he had prior notice or not, if you've been doing something for 20 yrs the same way, force of habit would probably send me to the same entrance I've been using. From what I've heard Spike was in the building had his ticket scanned and was in the elevator heading to his seat when he was told he had to use the VIP entrance on 34th st. In other words, go back outside, walk around the building and re-enter.

Nah...you don't treat any fan that way...much less a courtside season ticketholder.

And that's why they are wrong on this. They have more to lose than Spike Lee does. As I've said, technically speaking, the Knicks are right.

However, getting into a public pissing match with your most famous fan is a wrong move. As @flyerhawk mentioned, there were better ways for the Knicks to handle this. But, being the Knicks, they chose the most hamhanded way they could.

On the special treatment for celebrities...I get it, if you have an establishment and have that kind of traffic, it's good for biz so you want to take care of them and hope they come back. But I don't like comping celebs meals and stuff when they have plenty of money.

Ok even if he had to walk out and re-enter be the bigger man and do it. Don't take it to the media and bitch and moan about it and make it a huge issue when it easily could and SHOULD have been handled IN HOUSE with Lee and the Knicks. Yes, the Knicks are dumb to "kick him when he's down" but they are trying to save face as well (granted easily could and should have been handled differently no doubt).

It's how business works though. NBA players, for example, don't just get free basketball shoes, they get paid to wear them.

The more famous people a company can have wearing/using their products or eating in their restaurants, etc. The more regular folks are likely to pay to wear/use their products or eat in their restaurant.

You ever wonder why hot girls get into clubs for free and all the dudes gotta pay ridiculous cover costs or buy bottles? It's not simply because they're hot girls. It's because they're the ones that draw the crowd. It's better for business. Just like if you comp a meal at your restaurant but get to put up a picture of a famous actor on the wall who's eaten there.
