Excluding the LSU game due to bias

Including playoffs Best: Ohio State vs Clemson. No explanation needed.

Excluding: Wisconsin vs Oregon in the Rose. Oregon finished strong, Wisconsin lost one they shouldn’t have and ran into a good Ohio State team twice.

Worst: Florida vs Virginia. Nothing about this game excites me. Virginia is a meh team, Florida is a solid team. Can’t see this being much of a game.

Miserable. The conference prearrangements ruin everything.

Florida versus Wisconsin would not only be appropriate, given rankings, but I'd be interested to see what would happen.

Instead, we play Virginia. If the U of Va disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't notice besides feeling badly about Tommy Jefferson's school being vaporized. Now that UF is a top university, are we more likely to get stuck playing other eggheads in bowls now? Is that why Michigan is playing Alibamma?

Then, they shouldn't lose! :) BTW, I know it's not an even match-up, but they have put themselves in this boat. If they were a full playing member of the ACC, they would be in the Orange (instead of UVA) vs. Florida.

Sometimes, they play up record wise (Like 6-4-1 ND vs. 11-1 Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl in the early 90s), and sometimes they play down record wise like this year. Either way, hopefully, Iowa State can give them a game.

iowa st should be happy, they have a lot to gain with a win. a question for nd is whether kelly can motivate his players.

The only ways for us to play is either CFP or Capitol One or Outback Bowl. I would like to see some spots free up but if Wisconsin doesn't make the CFP, the Rose Bowl is the goal.

Iowa State is very happy! Most of us thought we were heading back to the Liberty Bowl - which would have been fine. However, the warmer, new destination is a very pleasant surprise! Up to ND to get themselves ready. If they are just looking at labels, that's on them. Something tells me when they look at film, they will realize they are playing a solid team.

#1 Rankings don't pay.

When they are recruiting those kids, they tell them the goal is to play in a bowl game, not just high ranking bowl games. Too bad they don't actually join a conference and have a chance to play for a championship, but that's on them. Also, this year, they have a very weak 10-2.

i imagine nd has their reasons for remaining independent, which includes a huge television contract, and not having to share revenue, from bowls or otherwise, with the rest of the conference.

without a true playoff you really don't know how weak or strong anyone is. everyone plays teams within their conference for the most part. what common opponents did alabama and osu have?

kids who go to notre dame expect to be playing in one of the big six bowls.

Agree with your complaint about bowl predeterminations. Bowls should be allowed to take the best available.

i think they know they are playing a dangerous team, and will take a professional attitude, although i'm not sure they will be excited about it as much as iowa state will be.

at an elite level in sports, little things like being emotionally a little flat can be the difference.

Doesn't the contract with the CFP state how they get to the Big 6 bowls? They didn't meet the criteria. I don't think that Notre Dame carries quite the clout you think it does. They have become a glorified G5 team. Yes, they play mostly P5 teams, but their opponents aren't up to the usual standards. They need to win marque games when they get them, like Georgia this year, Wisconsin next year.

is there a criteria for getting to the big 6 bowls. it looks like a mess. nd will probably make more by keeping all the revenue even when they go to a lesser bowl.

opponents are scheduled years in advance. you can't predict how strong or weak they'll be.

there are @10 teams will 10-2 records. they all have arguments pro and con.

The ones that I see is The Orange Bowl has a tie in with Big Ten/SEC/Notre Dame and the Cotton Bowl is At-Large

Also:

Notre Dame – eligible for ACC-contracted bowls. However, Notre Dame cannot be selected by an ACC bowl if there is an eligible ACC team with two or more wins than Notre Dame. For example, a 9–3 Duke team must be chosen over a 7–5 Notre Dame team. Notre Dame was selected to the 2019 Camping World Bowl in lieu of the 3rd-place ACC team, the third time since 2014 they have taken an ACC slot. Notre Dame can also be selected to play against ACC teams in the Orange Bowl twice in the span from 2014-2025, and has no limit in playing in any other New Year's Six bowls if selected (Notre Dame has yet to make an Orange Bowl in that time; its most recent New Year's Six Bowl was the December 2018 Cotton Bowl Classic).

i've got a better idea. just take the top 16 teams, put them all in bracket, and determine a true champion.

the bowl games have become irrelevant, and uninteresting.

They always were irrelevent except as an added data point. They were games played to make money for the organization or city putting on an exhibition.

Notre Dame needs to add Hawaii to its schedule and get 13 games a year. 11-2 looks better than 10-2

10-3 even looks better than 10-2.

Yep, sort of. In the way it is set up now, you can only have 13 games at this point if you played Hawaii or won a division and made your Conference Championship game.

Then the problem would be adding another team to even the divisions out. The choices I'm assuming would probably be between Cincy or UConn.
