what i would be thinking more is---- i really love the NBA, but at what point does me enjoying a league who bends over backwards to kowtow and support a communist dictatorship that kills thousands of its people, crushes dissent, destroys free speech, and goes against every democratic principle that the US was based on get in the way of me enjoying the NBA.

thats a personal question for everyone.

at least Silver supported free speech.

Lebron was as ridiculous of an ass kisser as he could be- his statement read like it was approved by someone in the chinese government.

100% agree.

Like it or not, the nature of the United States relationship with China puts people in the position of having to decide whether or not to enjoy a sports league that gets a lot of money from China (I've heard that if the NBA were to sever ties with China, it would cost them enough money that it would significantly effect the salary cap) or even buying products that were made there.

i just think its ridiculous to bash the President and America- like LeBron does--- while he lines his pockets from income generated from China which is about a million times worse in a million different ways.

that he runs his mouth about how he is "not going to shut up and dribble"- but when it effeects his pocket book he is all of a sudden "not educated enough to talk about it- i.e. - i am not going to kill the golden goose".

As one of the articles said

Michael Jordan was famous for allegedly saying "Republicans buy shoes too".

LeBron basically just said "Chinese buy shoes too".

The honest answer is distasteful. But, simple....

Would we be bending over for Cuba?

No.

They have nothing we want, don't own several conglomerates in our Country and don't have the largest Military force in the World.

Why are we kowtowing for China?

They own us.

The quick answer is that as of January 2018, the Chinese owned $1.17 trillion of U.S. debt or about 19% of the total $6.26 trillion in Treasury bills, notes, and bonds held by foreign countries.

In addition to Southeast Asia, the second location where most overseas Chinese banks are is the United States. However, unlike Southeast Asia where Chinese play dominant roles in the local economy, the Chinese Americans’ share of the highly developed American economy is small and most overseas Chinese banks in the United States are privately held.

Yep. And I actually have no problem with Lebron taking the "MJ stance" re: China, as long as he doesn't then turn around and rip someone else for speaking out.

MJ stayed out of politics, but I also don't remember him ever ripping someone for commenting on political issues.

the debt is an issue- but there are certain aspects of it that arent as detrimental as you may think.

much of it is held at super low interest rates. If Chiina stopped buying, or even selling US T-bills, the rates would go up, the value of their investment would go down, and they would have to find other places to put their money and nothing is as safe or reliable as a t-bill. It woudl hurt the US if they stopped buying, or sold of a large amount of their tbills but it would also hurt them as well.

the biggest, in my mind is access to a market of 1.4 billion people- and us getting cheap consumer goods. Companies want to sell their stuff there- but the chinese have forced ventures, and rampant IP theft--- that and they de-value their currency to get unfair advantages on trade.

A storyline in this years nba 2k video gm

After his "are you ready for it?" line? There's needs to be a dialogue choice where you can pick the option "Maybe. Is the bag involved?"

Ugh LeBron is awful on this, if true

Didn't read that specific link (garbage website) but I'm guessing from the headline its in reference to ESPN's Dave McMenamen's story. He was following the team when all this stuff happened and in his story he said Lebron pushed Silver to punish Morey because he believed Silver would punish a player if they ever cost the league money like that. Silver immediately pushed back and pointed out how the league never punished Lebron and others for speaking out on Trump, Trayvon Martin, "I Can't Breathe" and multiple other social issues. The story showed that right from the start, Lebron was never concerned about the issue, player safety in China, or anything else other than the financial hit he might take. McMenamen has a good track record so I'd say this is likely true.

Thanks for the info. It would be nice if more folks out there would just link to the video of McMenamin discussing it or something rather than Daily Caller's spin.

LeBron looks like shit on this, for sure. I'm not defending him here.

Dude, I thought you knew.

That was one of my first posts on the subject and why @Gman @trojanfan12 and I said he was being a hypocrite.

What a BITCH.

Talking shit about our President didn't risk adverse actions either, right?

“Nearly a week ago today, in a Shanghai hotel room, or Shanghai hotel ballroom, Adam Silver got up and addressed the players, and LeBron James is one of the players who got up and spoke and said, ‘Hey, what are we doing here? Daryl Morey made these statements,’” McMenamin recalled on air Tuesday. “You know damn well if a player made the same statements and caused such poor ramifications for the league, there would be some sort of league recourse.”

“There would be repercussions the player has to pay. You know, potentially this tweet could cost the NBA hundreds of millions of dollars. That could come out of the players’ pockets, and so that’s the double standard that was being addressed in that meeting,” he continued.

Actually, that's not hypocritical at all. Just because someone hasn't actively done anything for Hong Kong, doesn't mean they can't comment on or point out the hypocrisy of others.

I and the vast majority of posters on here are not really in a position to do anything for Hong Kong. We have neither the money, nor the fame to do anything that would make a difference. Not being in a position to do something, doesn't mean a person doesn't care.

However, Lebron and the NBA are in a position to be be able to at least pressure the Chinese government re: Hong Kong.

The fact that they are willing to make statements and take action when it either adds to or at least, has no effect on their bottom line, but remain silent or refer to someone else as "misinformed" and "uneducated" when they actually tweeted support for oppressed people, is as hypocritical as it gets.

I heard yesterday that protesters in Hong Kong were burning Lebron jerseys. Meanwhile, in China, his jerseys and shoes were selling well.

In China the people know what the government wants them to know and nothing more. That’s the irony of Lebrons uneducated and uninformed comment.
