Agreed, but his bigger point is a good one. Before Morey's tweet, no one was sticking microphones in the faces of these players, most of whom came from poverty and can't be expected to have nuanced geopolitical instincts, and asking them for their opinion on crucial geopolitical issues. Now they are on the hot seat, and that's not their fault.

LeBron is saying basically they are ballplayers and entertainers, not diplomats. Should we stop sending movies to China? Stop all trade with them? Declare war?

Do any of you work for a company that does business with China? Why aren't you quitting your job to speak out?
We also aren't on the internet calling our President a Bum Ass.

Which coincidentally, would be a death sentence in China.

We aren't wearing shirts that say " I can't breathe " on National TV.

Which would be a death sentence in China. But, would never make it on the air.

Cause you know.... Dictator.

Black guy gets wrongfully choked to death by NYC Cop, make a stand.

Thousands of people executed yearly for seeking the everyday freedoms that we take for granted , meh.

His selective outrage on human rights issues makes him look like a clown.

He can't have it both ways.

So Lebron calls Morey mistaken and misinformed. You know who is really mistaken and misinformed? The average person in mainland China.l, that’s who. The ones who have no idea what’s going on in Hong Kong because the news isn’t allowed to report it. They have no access to any of this, none.

He blew it for sure, but these guys never should have been involved in the first place

Which is why Lebron should have kept his mouth shut.

What have you done for Hong Kong lately?

Nothing. But I'm also not taking any money from China or calling someone who spoke out in support of Hong Kong misinformed or uneducated to protect my own interests there.

Is this true?

This is a Lakers reporter, right?

The balls on this guy!

NBA star LeBron James reportedly pressured the NBA to punish the Rockets’ General Manager Daryl Morey after he tweeted support for Hong Kong. James argued that if something a NBA player had tweeted had cost the league money they would have been punished, and questioned why the same wasn’t happening to Morey, according to Dave McMenamin on ESPN.

lol... James is just totally tone-deaf on this one.

There's a world outside the NBA and your 1%er inequalities, Bron.

What a BITCH.

Talking shit about our President didn't risk adverse actions either, right?

“Nearly a week ago today, in a Shanghai hotel room, or Shanghai hotel ballroom, Adam Silver got up and addressed the players, and LeBron James is one of the players who got up and spoke and said, ‘Hey, what are we doing here? Daryl Morey made these statements,’” McMenamin recalled on air Tuesday. “You know damn well if a player made the same statements and caused such poor ramifications for the league, there would be some sort of league recourse.”

“There would be repercussions the player has to pay. You know, potentially this tweet could cost the NBA hundreds of millions of dollars. That could come out of the players’ pockets, and so that’s the double standard that was being addressed in that meeting,” he continued.

I hadn't heard that one yet. Something tells me that the league wouldn't be punishing a player for speaking out against people being oppressed though.

I've said that he was correct in that Morey should have waited a week. Having said that, just because someone sticks a microphone in his face and asks a question, doesn't mean he has to answer. He called Morey "misinformed" and "uneducated" on the subject and then proceeded to show how misinformed and uneducated he is.

Also, being raised in poverty doesn't keep them from being able to understand that the Chinese government oppresses people or that their are people in China fighting to have the same freedom that we enjoy in this country.
Ok, what have you done for Hong Kong today?

He's American, not Chinese.

So if you want to speak out on some injustice in the US you also have to speak up on every injustice in every country in the world? Can't someone focus a little, on issues closer to home and closer to their own experience (growing up poor and black)? Are you saying if you can't protest everything you have to shut up about everything?

There are many countries in the world, and many of them do awful things to their people. Does LeBron have to fight every battle to be allowed to protest racism in his own country?

I'm not arguing LeBrons recent tweets and comments aren't stupid, they are. I'm arguing the hypocrisy accusation. When someone here tells me how they are helping Hong Kong, then they can rip him for that.

How exactly is that relevant to the conversation?

I figured you were above moving the goalpost.

Nobody is arguing that LeBron is required to do anything, say anything, in support of Hong Kong.

But, after his very clear PUBLIC condemnation of the President and the racial divide in this Country, who the fuck is he to tell Morey what he can, and can't, support?

Yes, LeBron is an American and not Chinese... but let's not pretend he doesn't have significant financial attachments to China... through the NBA, through his shoe contract, through Hollywood... China is a big fat honey pot for him.

All of that is highly relevant here... can't ignore it.

No.

Again....you are moving the goalpost.

He is not a hypocrite simply because he hasn't said anything in support of Hong Kong.

He's a hypocrite because he spoke out against someone who did.

Do you think he gave a fuck how his statements about the President affected the Rockets, Morey....hell the NBA?

NOPE.

Yet, he is ADVOCATING for this man to be punished for shit he does allllllllll the time.

Hell of a elephant in the room to try and ignore.

This is not even a complicated situation.

He tried to throw Morey under the bus for doing something that he does CONSTANTLY.

Speak out against perceived injustice.

Why did Lebron do it?

Financial gain.

Hypocrite

When did Lebron ever say he was against what Morey said? Because I see a lot of people hijack this topic to make it seem like he is against people standing up for Hong Kong.

You still had people bitching about the players not saying anything. Matter of fact, people bashed Harden and Westbrook for having no comments about this at their press conference.

I think we're talking past each other. I'm just saying he can criticize the president and protest racism and that does not require him to also protest Hong Kong

He did fuck up calling Morey out though

Oh boy, @msgkings322 ... I'm normally on a similar wavelength with you, but you've about totally lost me with this atomic stretch.

I'll assume you're feeling squirrelly and itching for some kind of devil's advocate position to argue from on a boring Tuesday afternoon.
