2018 CFB Season Fun Fact

Just added up some numbers because... I'm bored and the family has taken over the TVs and such. Of course everyone went to bed by the time I got done.... Anyway, I went over the noncon information for the 2018 season and this is what I found out:

*Numbers based on scheduled opponented. Cancelled games still factored in as the intent was to play them. For fairness, Nebraskas replacement game against Bethune-Cookman DOES count into this even though they had Akron originally scheduled.


Short Version

SEC: 43 of their 56 OOC games were with G5 or FCS opponents, 76% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS. Specifically, 15 of the 43 were FCS = 32%.

ACC: 37 of their 56 OOC games were with G5 or FCS opponents, 66% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS. Specifically, 14 of the 37 were FCS = 37%.

PAC12: 27 of their 36 OCC games were with G5 or FCS opponents, 75% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS. Specifically, 9 of the 27 were FCS = 33%

Big12: 19 of their 30 OOC games were with G5 or FCS opponents, 63% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS. Specifically, 8 of the 19 were FCS = 42%.

B1G: 26 of their 42 OOC games were with G5 or FCS opponents, 61% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS. Specifically, 3 of the 26 were FCS = 11%.
*FCS % would be 7% if Nebraska did not have to cancel and replace Akron.*


P5 Average: 69% of all OOC games were G5 or FCS competition. Specifically, 32% of those games were FCS opponents.

Fun facts to take away:

• Every single SEC opponent had 3 or more G5/FCS opponents in their OOC games. Keep in mind they only had 4 OOC games.
• SEC and ACC are the only conferences in which EVERY team played an FCS opponent.
• B1G played the fewest G5 and fewest FCS opponents out of all conferences.
• Last but not least... fuck Iowa. Northern Iowa... really? I get Illinois scheduling an FCS, they need everything they can get, but I thought you were better than that, so....

First and last time I will ever defend Florida, but when they scheduled Idaho (powerhouse right?), they were still FBS in the G5. So it’s tough to knock them for that since it wasn’t an FCS team when they scheduled it.

I figured that, because I don't think you're allowed to schedule more than one FCS opponent for the regular season... I could be wrong though.

Not necessarily. Some PAC teams could schedule all 3 OOC's with G5's and FCS. That would bring the overall conference % up.

One a year should be the max. With 3 OOC games it should be a major P5, mid P5 and a scrimmage.
