I don't think either can play due to injuries

Every good 'team' comes to an end, so all you can hope for is a SB while the window is open. The exception is New England, because Brady doesn't force a 'normal' contract. That isn't the only reason of course, but a big one.

If Garapolo plays like he did in 2017, our window could open as soon as THIS season.

Could but not likely as I believe the O-Line needs to much help.

New England is the exception because of Bill Belicheck. They are able to fill roster holes with reasonably cheap talent or draft picks. They have done an incredible job with personnel over the years while managing the salary cap

The biggest issue to me is the secondary. Only Sherman is proven. The team is relying on a bunch of injury prone and untested players this year.

With better communication and better health, the secondary will be a little better. The pass rush will help them even more. So not saying the secondary will be solid, but am saying the results will be better.

Witherspoon needs to play with more focus, but at least we know he has ability. This is his 3rd year, so he SHOULD be able to "play faster". If he 'flames out', their first draft class will then be considered lousy.

Yes, but it is still a big question mark heading into this season

The secondary does need help as well but Verrett is proven (was a pro bowler) he just can't stay healthy.

No doubt health is the first factor, but thats not something anyone can predict. There will be injuries but we don't know the severity and to how many players?

So at this point all we can do is assume better health. IMO last year was more than typical in the severity and number of injuries.

That is the problem. The secondary has at least three people who have a history of not being able to stay healthy

The interior O-Line has a history of giving up QB pressures, at least the injured have shown ability to be NFL starters. What would you rather have guys that stay healthy but can't block or guys that have a hard time staying on the field but can cover? The front office doesn't seem to care if they protect the money the invested at the QB position which seems like lunacy to me.

The 49ers center has shown the ability to be an NFL starter. He was not too long ago ranked one of the top centers in the NFL. And if by the injured you are referring to secondary it is questionable beyond Sherman and Verrett how many of them you would consider to be quality NFL starters.

Yeah we all know this, EVERY team has injured players. There will always be question marks heading into ANY season.

Every year there will be questions marks, whether at QB, RB, O-line, D-line, LB, Secondary, etc. Every year somewhere. Every year there will be injuries, whether before or during the season.

Not saying things are now solved, because the team never will be complete. But am saying there are improvements and you can't fix everything at once. Yes, there are injured players, and we don't know what will happen. But this a fact of NFL life.

The difference is in the secondary there are a number of players that have an injury history. It isn't some random injury with these players. They are hurt every year so the 49ers are going into this season hoping these players defy their histories. Relying in Ward, Tartt, and Verrett is a big question mark.

Sure Richburg has shown he can be a good player and hopefully it was just injuries but the same can't be said for the guard play. I would include Ward with Sherman and Verrett. The 49ers interior O-Line was absolutely terrible last year and they did even less to fix that than they did the secondary.

I would not include Ward. He is average at best. PFF ranks him average. The guards are ranked as good as the secondary. Person is above average. Tomlinson average. Tartt is above average, Ward average, Colbert and Witherspoon below average

The interior offensive line gave up 98 QB pressures which doesn't rank very highly.
