Seen it happen too many times. Its like the Madden curse
I checked the Wikipedia page a little while ago. Whoever's been editing it decided to jump the gun and knock out the Lightning prematurely. They must believe in the curse even more than you and I:

I don't follow hockey closely at all, but my impression is the playoffs are completely, totally random. No matter how it's seeded, or how good you are, series outcomes are completely up in the air. Do I have this right?

Tampa was really great during the regular season right?

Baseball is similar but there's a little more predictability.

Well, yes and no. Teams have a best-of-seven series to prove they deserve to go onto the next round. More than any other sport, hockey is a game of momentum. Teams that squeaked into the playoffs can get hot and dispose of some team that tied the record for most wins in a season.

Yes. But the regular season is the regular season. That's why there's a separate trophy for doing the best there.

Very true. Great way to frame it.

OK that's pretty cool. Maybe baseball, with a similar if less prevalent issue, should do the same? The 2001 Mariners would approve.

I imagine most MLB fans, players and team owners would treat it the same way NHL fans treat lesser awards, such as conference championships and the President's Trophy; they would shrug, but hope for more. Hell, there's a superstition among a majority of players not to even touch such trophies until winning the Stanley Cup.

This is shocking to me, but playoff hockey is a different beast.

As long as we can all agree that this is only because the Lightning are choking and this is not in any way related to the Jackets abilities and heart.

I don't really watch much hockey but this is great! Prematurely, assuming Columbus does win and say they sweep Tampa this would be one of the biggest upsets in NHL history especially if they swept them pretty much dominating?

Game 1 wasn't domination, Tampa ran out to a 3-0 lead in the second. But from the third period of that game until now, yeah, CBJ are controlling things. Which, in a way, makes it even more impressive. Lots of other #8 teams would have collapsed after that start.

Going all-in on Tampa game four...either way, I'll be happy with the outcome
