This kid, who has only played in 31 games of a possible 48 and was a 2016 4th round draft pick, received a 3 year 25.8M extension. That's 8.6M per year on avg. Coleman's annual average pay is pretty much in line. Wait until Bryce Callahan signs with another team.

Tavon Young Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap

Contract Notes

Tavon Young signed a 3 year contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens on February 20, 2019. The extension is worth $25,800,000 with $13,000,000 guaranteed. The guarantee consists of a $10 million signing bonus, $1 million salary guarantee in 2019; and $2 million salary guarantee in 2020. Total paper value of the contract is $27,845,000 which includes the $2 million which Young was scheduled to earn in 2019 prior to the extension.

Justin Coleman is now the highest paid nickelback in the NFL. 9 million for a nickelback is a crazy amount of money, unless they are planning on moving him to the outside and playing more than 50-60% of the defensive snaps.

Lions reportedly agree to deal with tight end Jesse James

The 6-foot-7, 261-pounder is also a respected blocker. He graded out 15th among 81 qualifiers at his position as a pass protector and 29th as a run blocker, according to Pro Football Focus.

Yeah — before the Lions signed him, I read how he was rated the most complete TE on the market, when you add in blocking and pass catching.

I like his signing — I think he will be a valuable addition to the Lions and hopefully put an end to the thoughts of a TE at #8 overall.

I have very little knowledge regarding Coleman but 9M a year for a nickel CB seems awfully high, so I will assume Coleman is the new CB2.

Assuming Coleman becomes the outside CB2 then a 9M APY can be considered somewhat low in this market. That's me assuming he was signed to be the CB opposite Slay.

This signing right here, while not knowing the contractual numbers, will be my favorite of any of the four so far. I wouldn't care if the APY is slightly over 7M for James.

We'll still draft a TE and no ones knows what round that'll be but when it does happen, I'll assume it's a draft value.

Flowers got what they thought he would. He basically replaces Ansah.
James is a huge need for us and he is young. Don’t know what they paid him? I like those two moves.

Amendola at 34 for 4.5 million is way too much money.
And 9 million for a NCB is crazy. We have too many holes to fill to have the highest paid NCB in the NFL.

I know it gets old but the Lions have to pay a bit more for FA. I think the Amendola cost is pretty on point. He’s only here for a year, hopefully he can be somewhat as productive as he was in NE. Miami was a mess at the QB position. Plus Funchess just signed a 1yr/13mill deal.

Like the Flowers and James signings, confused by the amount they gave Coleman. Amendola singing sucked.

So far so good. If Flowers does not convert those hits to sack it will be rough though

I don’t think that is how they will use him. I’ve been reading up on him and it says he really struggled on the outside, which is why he was cut by Minnesota, then traded by New England for a 7th round pick. Seattle moves him to the slot and that is when he made big strides.

If Detroit is able to move him outside - 9 million isn’t that bad. If it is to play the same role he played in Seattle. That is ALOT of money.

Landon Collins gets 6 year 84M with 45M in guarantees. 14M per year avg.
Do you still wish the Lions had signed Collins and for what he's getting from the redskins ?

Ridiculous amount of money for any Safety.

I had to take a double look. Good grief.

And he is not even a cover safety. That is by far the largest overpay so far. It makes signing Flowers at 16-17 mil look pretty good now. I was afraid it was going to be close to 20.

I don't know which signing is the largest overpay so far but Collins getting 14M APY, Honey Badger 14M APY and then Mosely 17M is at the top for me at this time.

Safeties receiving outside CB1 money and a LB that is average at best in coverage receiving Edge rusher type money baffles my mind.

Lions free agency grade: Breaking down the Justin Coleman signing

Positional need
Believe it or not, nickel corner was just as big of a need for Detroit as outside corner is. With teams going three wide more and more often in the NFL these days, the Lions are likely to have at least five defensive backs on the field around 70-80 percent of the time.

Last year, the Lions didn’t truly have a nickel corner on their roster. While the common belief was that Lawson was their No. 2 outside cornerback, no defensive back played more in the slot than Lawson, with nearly 40 percent of his snaps coming from that position.

The rest of the nickel snaps came from a mixture of Darius Slay, DeShawn Shead, Quandre Diggs and Teez Tabor, among other—none of which had more than 90 snaps from the position.

And how did that lineup perform in 2018? Not well:

Just a reminder of the #Lions DBs in the slot in 2018:

Nevin Lawson- 236 snaps, 113.8 passer rating allowed
Darius Slay- 82 snaps, 136.7 PR
Teez Tabor- 69 snaps, 149.1 PR
Jamal Agnew- 55 snaps, 108.3 PR
Mike Ford- 26 snaps, 109.7 PR
Cre'Von LeBlanc- 19 snaps, 118.8 PR

Lions free agency grade: Breaking down the Justin Coleman signing

But with Coleman now aboard, the Lions don’t have to continually search for their nickel cornerback. They have one. And while Coleman doesn’t provide a ton of versatility (he played 74 percent of his snaps in the slot last year), he will assume one of the toughest jobs in the secondary and allow his teammates like Darius Slay to do what they do best—dominate the edges.

There’s no doubt that Coleman excels as a nickel cornerback. Let’s just drop in a few stats from his past two years with the Seattle Seahawks:

And consider this: Per SB Nation, the Lions were dead last in the league last year, allowing 9.52 yards per attempt out of the slot. Justin Coleman allowed just 5.21 yards per attempt.

If there’s a weakness to Coleman’s game, it’s in defending the run. Coleman has had consistent tackling struggles throughout his career, and his 5-foot-11, 190 pound frame makes him an easy target to block out of a play.

Surprising signing seems as though MP requires his DB's to be better than just average at tackling.

Lions free agency grade: Breaking down the Justin Coleman signing

Value
This is where the signing of Coleman will be debated. Is a nickel cornerback worth $9 million a year?

There’s no doubt that teams are realizing just how important of a position nickel corner is, not just because they are starting to play more in every game, but because just how difficult it is to find talent at that specific position.

That being said, would the Lions have been better off spending a couple more million per year? Kareem Jackson got a three-year deal at $11 million per year, and Ronaldy Darby is expected to get even more.

It’s hard to put an exact number on the value of a talented nickel cornerback, but the Lions certainly made a statement about their priorities by making Coleman the highest-paid player at the position.

So Kareem Jackson, who will be turning 31 this year, gets a 3 year 11M APY.

I'm pretty sure I guessed somewhere in this hot mess that he get 6-7M APY. I wasn't even close and Jackson played outside CB, Nickel CB, Slot CB and some FS last year.

I don't believe the Coleman signing is quite the overpay when taken into consideration other signings by DB's so far at this time.
