White Sox are bullshit.

That being said, I told you I’d cut you @SlinkyRedfoot if the Padres signed Machado. Let’s calendar something.

LOL...OK Nostrodumbass. You can predict that he won't win the rest of his career???

I agree with Cal. Manny comes across as a whiny pussy who would be fine playing for a loser as long as he's getting paid, and signing with the Padres doesn't do anything to change my mind on that.

So what's the minimum Harper contract after this? 10/310?

No it doesn't, but the padres don't have a bad offense, and they have the best farm system out there right now... is it possible that they are not as bad of a team as we all think they are?? What if they trade for Kluber??

62 win team.

Franchise whose largest contract in history is 68 million.

We bring up Cy f*cking Young in our farm system a handful of years back...dump him in his prime for a handful of "maybe one of these guys is the next Cy f*cking Young" players.

This was never going to happen if some team was spending 300 million. Simple as that.

Honestly, I find it actually better that we didn't sign him. We'd be f*cked for two decades playing minor leaguers in half of our roster spots if he had a career ending injury. At least now we still have hope we can pull of a Twins/2005 ChiSox like miracle with a bunch of homegrowns and a splash signing if we find ourselves back in the 80 win+ range.

. My questions are Why was the Padres the only team willing to do this??

...

because it's a dumb move and the bigger payroll teams have already been burned many times by albatross contracts like this so they've learned their lesson.

so, the padres will go from 66 to 74 wins and it will cost them an add'l $30 mill.

I'm sure he will put a few more butts in the seats early in his tenure and sell a little more merchandise since he's a 'big name', but the Padres will never recoup the $300 million they are going to pay him and most teams have figured that out.

Ranked 28th of 30 teams in runs scored last year. But their pitching ranked 21st out of 30, so they've got that going for them.

and they have the best farm system out there right now..

That's better than not having the best farm system, but it really doesn't mean shit until it does. The for years, the Indians continually had one of the top ranked farm systems for years in the 2010's, and all it netted them was a single playoff berth - a Wild Card to boot.

is it possible that they are not as bad of a team as we all think they are??

With Jesus, anything is possible.

What if they trade for Kluber??

They'll no longer have the best farm system out there right now, but they'll have an ace with a creaky back.

Sox are getting destroyed right now in the media. What they deserve.

they absolutely should be... if the padres got Machado, then that is saying the White sox could have... And not to mention the players that the Sox signed just to get machado over...

Owners have to stop being so cheap... lets not pretend they can not afford these contracts... and why is it that fans are always on the owners sides in these matters?? you would rather the owners pocket the money than spend on their players???

That is insanity...

Sox ownership is among the cheapest in the sport. They practically guaranteed they’d finally spend. Always the bridesmaid. For shit’s sake, the GM said today we should be proud of their pursuit. Tell me that isn’t fucked three ways to Sunday.

Holy shit. Clearly, SlinkyTardfoot hijacked my account and penned the above clusterfuck.

My apologies to everyone that read that abortion of a sentence.

I don't think the contract was too bad... kind of what I was expecting for him... My questions are Why was the Padres the only team willing to do this?? and would he have taken a little less to go to a team that actually matters??

It doesn't look good on a player who takes the money to play for a loser... But with that said, Padres do have a great minor league system, so maybe they compete sooner than later...

The amount of years and money for a guy who admitted he doesn't try at times is why. He'll look at last year's World Series as an example

Don't think the Red Sox even made an offer.

Why would they have? They already have a shortstop and no way with the luxury tax they'd get nailed with. Besides, they need to worry about resigning Sale, Xander, Mookie... etc

Sox already have a 3rd baseman and shortstop, not to mention they need to extend several players.

Embarrassing day for the Sox front office. They spent the last 2 months talking about him every chance they got in front of a microphone. Padres kept a low profile and got a deal done. Professional organization vs a clown show
