What’re you drinking? Pecota has them losing 90 games and that’s probably pretty spot on.

So, a 10 game improvement :D

And PECOTA sucks.

Also, considering they haven’t made the playoffs since 2008, this whole rebuild is kind of a scam and an excuse not to spend. When they finally try to spend, it ends up being a botch job. Please don’t let Reinsdorf fool you into thinking it pains him to lose, which he always peddles. He loses on a yearly basis and all of a sudden hopes a bunch of prospects will get some sort of synergy going? Bollocks.

Whatever man. Nothing I say is gonna change your mind.

If improving 10 games still means losing 90, that’s beyond awful. Sox haven’t been above .500 since 2012, and that team went nowhere.

To think Eloy is going to come to MLB and put up Gehrig numbers and somehow lead to more wins when the rest of the roster sucks other than Abreu, that is certainly one way of trying to be positive despite reality.

You're moving the goal posts. 2019 is not the year to be good, it's the year to be noticeably better. Eloy is not meant to be Gehrig, yet.

I'm telling you, 2020-2022 they are a playoff team

Going to hundreds of games over the last 20 years of full and partial season ticket package ownership, talking about winning in the future means nothing any longer. Not ragging on you by any means, but I have zero faith in Rick Hahn and Jerry Reinsdorf. The Sox haven’t signed a top flight player since Albert Belle, and Tupac might’ve still been alive then. When you’re in the third largest market in the country and never sign top guys and just lost 100 games, future this or that comes up as hollow.

Again, not trying to torpedo your optimism.

Buddy, I totally get it. Your pessimism is more than justified (although, 2005 did happen). And obviously my take isn't a lock. Just saying, it feels like the plan is going to work out to me.

My dad is the big Sox fan who got me into them (I adopted the Giants when I moved to SF 30+ years ago), and he and I would always argue about how to do it. He would always say sign this guy sign that guy, never wanted to blow it up and do it the Astros/Cubs way. Joked that he might not live to see that work (he's 81). And for years they avoided doing that. Until now, they are finally doing it right.

Note that Chicago is not the 3rd largest market (the city proper is pretty big but markets include the surrounding area) and they are the smallest market with 2 teams. And we both know the Sox are barely noticed in Chicago. Not even 2005 moved that needle much.

No guarantees it works, but I think they will at least make the playoffs a couple of years and then it's pretty random.

A quick aside, this was one of the first things when I moved to Chicago. Living in the northside I sometimes forget they are in town, especially since it seems like the Cubs have a hold on the entire surrounding area.

But to your overall point, I can see the pieces moving in their favor towards contending in a couple years.

PECOTA's always got some wacky projections. I really don't buy the Cubs finishing under .500, I think there's a lot of players that underperformed last year that are set to rebound in 2019 (Bryant, Rizzo, Contreras). Baez will probably regress a bit at least in the power department, but the batting average doesn't seem very fluky given his BABIP was in line with 2016-17. Steamer also had the Red Sox dropping off in 2018 when most of the Red Sox hitters underperformed in 2017. The lineup bounced back significantly in 2018.

I am glad the Giants were never linked to this guy. He just doesn’t seem like the kind of player you want to anchor yourself to. He doesn’t appear to really care about winning. He is a great player, though, no question. But now that his great great grand kids are set for life, will he put his feet up and relax from here out?

Im with you...……....
It appears to me it is more about the money than wanting to win......and not picking on SD here, but wtf,SD………….?

what do they have to send them towards the top...……..?

I know you gotta start somewhere, but does SD have any start players or any top prospects coming up to start a good foundation to win with...……....?

Sorry @calsnowskier
I posted before I read this guys comment...………:

Well the Padres have the #1 farm in baseball so having him as a base I guess would be good by the time their prospects come up and complete their 6 year obligation along with some service time manipulation Machado will be on the last few years of his contract

Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Urias and Francisco Mejia were pretty highly touted prospects and will probably see significant playing time in 2019. Chris Paddack has been dominating in the minors and could see a callup this year. Logan Allen is also one of the top LHP prospects and could get called up this year. And that's just some of their near MLB-ready guys.

Good signing by the Padres on Machado. Maybe not 2019 but I think in 2020 and beyond the Padres prospect group w/Machado could be a team to watch.
