Historically? Mike Ditka was just a below average coach that struck fucking gold, rode Buddy's D to a title and then choked in every ensuing playoffs. No excuse that they didn't win another Super Bowl. They were the best team in football at least twice after. Especially in 86 when the D was even BETTER than 85. I know McMahon got cheap shotted by Charles Martin... blah blah blah... but still... fuck that.\
Imo, Ditka is a little overrated as a coach but by most fans is probably underrated as a football player. 4x first team all pro, 2x second team all pro is nothing to scoff at.

Yeah, as a player, he is not over-rated. He is a legit HOFer. But as a HC, I think he is grossly over-rated.

... Yes the 'Slash' reserves a special place in my heart for nostalgic reasons, but if not for the era that he played in he probably would have gone undrafted in the NFL and moved to WR. And if we're honest he only had 1 decent season as a starter in 2001. Beyond that he shouldn't have been starting at QB. He was an exciting player during a relatively dull ground & pound era of football.

Plaxico Burress... Aside from his size, there really wasn't anything special about him. His athletic potential never really materialized in the NFL. The QBs & systems that he played with gave him more attention than he deserved. I was not sad to see him leave Pittsburgh.

Mike Wallace... 1 trick pony that needed a QB with a good deep ball to be effective. Wasn't sad to see him leave either, especially at the pricetag that Miami paid him... LOL. He was arguably the beginning of the "me-first" assholes that Tomlin began to foster in Pittsburgh.

Kendrell Bell... Aside from his rookie season, the rest of his career was marred by injury. He was supposed to be the next Greg Lloyd, but he was never the same again.

Jarvis Jones... SEC sack leader and an absolute steal at 17. Or so we thought. The rest is history.

Limas Sweed... lmao... Big swing & a miss here.

Oh, dude. He's a hall of fame and probably top 5 all-time TE. Helluva career and a big part of the 1963 NFL Champion team. John Mackie and him revolutionized the position. I will never slight him on that.

I'm not saying he hasn't been a contributor to the franchise. I was more speaking to his "legend" around Chicago as "Da Coach". You would seriously think this guy is superior to Parcells, Walsh or BB the way people lap his ass. You'd have to be a Chicagoan to fully appreciate it, I do suppose.

Barry Sanders is honestly the only guy I can think off off the top of my head from the whole history of the Lions other than Calvin Johnson and Stafford. Oh, and that one kicker who played for them for like 40 years awhile back, he was cool too.
Jason Hanson remains underrated imo.

Don Muhlbach as well. Quinn drafted his replacement years ago, yet Donnie remains. The greatest longsnapper in Lions history.

I'd take Herman Moore on my team before Quitatron fwiw.

I agree with @broncosmitty Lions are too consistently terrible to have anyone overrated. Calvin Johnson is the only one. I dont think Stafford is held in a high enough regard to count.

Stafford is valued about right. I think people regard him as an above average QB. You think Calvin is overrated?

Yeas, not at first. He gave up years before he retired and it showed though. Not really his fault, but he gave up on plays all the time the last couple years. Lions broke him

Teddy Bridgewater - He's a poor man's RGIII.

bridgewater might have been overrated by Minnesota fans, but this is pure nonsense. I'd take Bridgewater any day of the week before I'd take Robert Griffin.

i don't know many Steelers fans who really had Kordell rated all that high, though. Once we got to see him for a full season in 97, it was pretty obvious he wasn't that good.

he was decent, sure. but some Steelers fans would have you believe the guy was far better than he showed, particularly when playing the pass.

I can't count the number of times that Calvin Johnson had a pass hit him in the hands only to bounce off to a defender for a pick. then have to listen to @broncosmitty tell me how bad Stafford is because of the picks he threw in the game.

Plus to say that Herman Moore was just a possession receiver is wrong. He had 123 receptions in 1995 which was the NFL record for 7 years and didn't get topped for a second time until 2014. Dallas had Emmitt at the same time, but I don't see any of their receivers on the all time single season list.

Arian Foster.

So much ability to have been one of the best ever but so little desire to be.

"Hey, Numba Nine, try overhand."

It was mainly the younger generations that held him on a high pedestal. I was amazed by the fanfare that he received around town, and still does to this day!

the one thing that always comes to mind when someone brings up kordell are all those balls he threw into the dirt. anything past 7 yards out and he was inaccurate as a motherf....

For Dallas I have 3.

Roy William's, WR
Roy William's, S
Bradie James, LB
I'm not sure #1 and #3 were ever really over-appreciated by the fanbases per se. But RW the safety was IMO completely over-appreciated and never the player many made him out to be. He could hit for sure but he was the original lost in coverage, lost in space, bad angle Cowboy IMO. Now I'm not pretending he never had a role and was never good, but Woodson covered up his flaws and made him a lot of money and late in his career when he lost a step he flat out stunk.:2cents:

I can think of some 1st round picks that were way overrated. Tim Couch (# 1 overall), Brady Quinn (# 22), Brandon Weeden (# 22), Johnny Manziel (# 22). And yes I hate the # 22 now. Hopefully they never pick from that spot again.
#22 is my number because of the greatest goal scorer in NHL history...
