Just compromise and give him some funding for the wall in certain areas to test it out and where it's needed most. Because a stronger barrier IS practical and useful in certain sections of the border. Just offer him a billion for limited wall construction and both sides get a win and we all move on. The wall is (over large swaths of the border) a mostly stupid idea that doesn't even address how most illegal immigrants arrive here. But a billion in the scheme of things isn't a big deal and compromise is part of this whole democracy thing.
The difference this time is Trump has made it really hard for the Democrats to see any reason to give in. He's, without prodding or scheming, given the Dems absolutely everything they think they need to come out of this with a win by just continuing to say no. He took ownership of the shutdown before it even began. He addressed the nation about literally nothing. He is leaving negotiating tables in a huff without any meaningful actual negotiating taking place. The leader of the legislative body his party still controls has been so invisible throughout this I'm wondering if anybody has filed a missing persons report.

And yet for Trump it kind of works anyway because unlike when he was separating families at the border his base couldn't really give a shit about wasteful federal employees getting paid and food stamps being distributed. In fact, there may come a time when those people turn on the Democrats and start bitching at them to give Trump what he wants.

Trump has nothing to gain by capitulating and has his wall to gain by sticking to his guns. If any voices start to get louder, it won't be toward Trump.

I don't disagree with you at all, I just think the Dems should be the bigger people and do what is best for the COUNTRY since they are the only adults in the room here and the government needs to reopen.

Trump certainly owns the blame for this, polls are against him, he didn't get it done in the last 2 years for some reason, and his messaging has been ALL over the fucking place (need a wall, but we can fund it without Congress, but they must fund it, but Mexico is paying for it, but we can't prove that at all, and the border is better under me already, so... wtf?).

So I don't blame the Dems for what they are doing, I'm just bigger than the fucknuts who cheer really giving it to the "other side" for the sake of giving it to the other side. They're fucking idiots. They are too ignorant to know any better. But I'm a fan of pragmatism and results at the end of the day. And the overall impact of all the work people will have to catch up on alone probably will now exceed $5 billion in overrun costs. So what's the point.

I guess saying "Listen you motherfuckers, we're building a wall" didn't work.

And now he's flying to Texas for some reason to show us where the wall will go? I don't know. That's stupid.

Here's the thing though, I actually blame both sides even though I think Trump is a complete buffoon and a human wasteland of moral fiber. Just compromise and give him some funding for the wall in certain areas to test it out and where it's needed most. Um, no...

He rode this pony stating Mexico will pay for it.
He had 2 years to address this "emergency" that he created, with a Republican gov't...so why is it an emergency now? Is it because of his policies?
He is distracting from the real problems...again, that he created.
Nothing about a wall eliminates what he claims, falsely, are the emergency issues.
He's offering nothing in return...that's not a compromise.

You can't depend on anything coming out of this fuckers mouth. It's a teachable moment for this asshat.

Don't disagree with any of that. It's all his fucking fault. But they won't come close to completing even 1/16 of any border wall the next two years. And I just don't think hurting the country for his tantrum is worth. Give the baby a rattle (a smaller one than the one he wanted) and see if he can play nicely with it so everyone can get back to their shit.

You know he won't play nicely with it and will believe this is how you do the art of the deal. No upside for the Dems to give him anything...

No upside politically. But airports having proper security, food being inspected, permits being given to small businesses, parks being opened, overtime expenses for backlogged work, a million+ employees not getting a paycheck, FEMA continuing to help people, farmers getting checks to survive, investigations into serious crimes being suspended, landlords not getting checks for Section 8 housing tenants (and evictions that follow), and on an on are an upside.

I don't disagree Trump deserves absolutely nothing. He's a complete piece of shit. If he had a heart attack tomorrow the country would be better for it. His supporters are ravenous, fuckwit traitors so poorly educated they will believe anything.

But...

but..

...the country also has to run and somebody has to be the bigger person.

I don't want to be the guy standing outside the window shouting at what a fucking idiot the guy is who brought the raccoon into the McDonald's. ;)

You have to face the consequences. You can't clean up his mess so he continues to generate others because he didn't learn.

and it's not like gov't workers or sub contractors, or even union people, didn't know who or what they were working for...and that shutdowns/strikes are out of the ordinary.

Our security is fine and delays in approving the latest micro brew isn't a problem. Now the farmer bailout and pricing will be an issue, but those folks voted for this turd.

It's painful, but lessons need to be learned...tough love

I agree.

The past shows Don wont actually really negotiate anything (see Television City NY) so if the Dems give anything then he'll claim a victory. That will energize his supporters upset some of the Dem supporters.

There is no winning for anyone when a president uses his power only for himself. If the Democrats give in--at all, though it seems from what I've read Trump will only accept his $5.7 billion figure, and not a penny less--they set a precedent for allowing him to ransom federal employees and food safety--people's lives and wellbeing--against decent folks to get what he wants. The Democrats may have a responsibility to get the government up and running, sure, but they also have a responsibility to protect vulnerable Americans from being used as leverage in Trump's political schemes.

To help explain crime in the U.S., I took the time to annotate this map. I hope you all learn something about how and why crime happens here... and a little about dinosaurs.

Can you run the MD stats again without crimes that I am involved in and show an updated colour?
