The past two Friday nights into Saturday morning (when they stock my club) have seen torrential downpours. Fuck it....they run like rabbits and can hardly fly in those conditions so I've just skipped the AMs. I've managed to get a limit of birds on the previous Friday afternoons though at a State area. It's real wet in places so I wear lightweight waders. Whip will range out there in the open spaces and he pinned a rooster last Friday out in the middle of a swamp. The GPS read 80yds and it was waist deep water and reeds most of the way but once there I discovered an island and my boy locked up. I haven't been shooting well but I made a nice shot on this one and folded him clean. Would have sucked to trudge all the way out there to miss.

Had a great experience at the deer club Friday evening. One of our members is in his upper 80's and hasn't been able to get around all that well the past few years because of a bad back. We've purposely built deer stands for him to use where he doesn't have to walk very far to get in the stand or climb a ladder when he gets there. Despite this he hasn't been able to hunt as much as he used to because of his health, but when he does he's great to have around hunt camp.

Earlier this summer his doctor informed him that he wasn't going to be able to operate on his back due to his age and the condition it's in. He was really bummed about that because not being active due to his back issues he's been miserable. He hadn't planned on hunting much but we were able to convince him to come down this past weekend.

Friday comes and it's an absolute monsoon. I was getting bummed because I was doing my usual hunt Friday then go to Clemson Saturday morning with some of the other guys and didn't think I was going to be able to hunt much with the older gentleman. Luckily the rain eased off late in the afternoon so we were able to get a hunt in.

Last year I had a spot that I hunted with my climber and had seen a lot of deer so back in the spring I put in a box blind style ground stand on the closest road for this gentleman. When the time came for us to go hunt I drove him right up to his stand, told him where the deer were coming from then went to a nearby stand so I'd be close by if he needed me.

Right about 6:00PM I hear him shoot, complete with the familiar "slap" of a rifle round finding it's mark. I sat there for a minute but couldn't stand it so I climbed down and went to see what he got. It wasn't the biggest doe but it was the first deer he had killed in three years. I was as happy for him as I was for my kids when they killed their first. Hunt camp was in a celebratory mood Friday night!

Best thing is he was so energized by the hunt he's already planning his next trip, trying to line up when we are all going to be down!

Hopefully when I get to be his age some younger member takes the same effort with me.

Decided to get Whip out to that farm where birds hold up well past stocking. Picked up a hen pheasant on 1/19. Two months after the final stocking!

Drew a buck tag in the Owyhees in southwestern Idaho... I'm pumped!

It's been a minute since I've hunted anything remotely close to public lands so I'm going to have to do some actual planning this year. For the past 5 years I've been goin up to my uncle's property in the Clearwater region to grocery hunt for Whitetails.

Anyone have any tips or advice? This is what many Idahoans call the trophy hunt, so I want to do this right.

Good luck my man. The farthest south in Idaho I've been hunting is Weiser. What dates for the tag?

I'm leaving in 8 days for my elk hunt down that way. Already have my pack ready and the sleepless nights have begun. I can't close my eyes without seeing a bull bugle!!

Heading down in November I believe... Bucko's should be plenty fat by then if they survive the bowhunters.

Really want to get back into elk. Haven't done it in years, probably back when I was in high school. Never got to put one down, but I always muled out the meat for someone else. Quite the workout but I was always rewarded for my efforts from my friends.

Good luck with your hunt in Weiser. Are you going to be on the Snake side of Weiser or the CC Res side?
