I fully believe that this is the worst trade the Mariners have made since the Erik Bedard trade.

Only way that this trade even breaks even is if the Mariners can get something for Santana and Crawford lives up to expectations. Even if Crawford does live up to expectations, I don't think he'll ever be as good as Segura is.

Crawford was a very highly rated prospect but hasn't performed all that well in his brief time in the majors. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't have high expectations for him.

Only way this trade makes any sense to me is they end up flipping Santana for prospects + taking on someone else's undesirable contract. Regardless, they're still stuck in an endless undesirable contract loop.

Joel Sherman kinda throws this idea out there.

There both trade bait next year, someone will come in at the deadline and over pay for one of them, he has to take a step back to move forward, nobody was gonna over pay for Segura now after the whole clubhouse fight, and they sure as hell weren't going to keep him. This trade will not be graded until he moves Santana for more picks and the plus side is Crawford actually living up to his potential here finally

Great trade by the Phillies. I'd honestly give them an A++ for this one.
Phillies are lmfao at this trade. Really, it's a damn robbery is what it is. They got rid of an undesirable contract from Santana and picked up a decent SS in return. Ended up giving a SS that's no way in shape or form better than Segura.

This trade is downright stupid for Dipoto.

it appears the M's really really REALLY want Segura to GTFOH.... they'll pay him 1mil in bonus for waiving the no trade clause. Not the Phillies, but the M's.

I'd rather eat salary and get prospects, although it sounds like the Mariners aren't willing to do that.

I'm still under the impression that Jeff McNeil was pulled from the Mets' trade because the Mariners lowered the amount of money they'd send to New York. The speculation that Seattle would send $60m to the Mets was revised to $20m right around the time it was announced McNeil wouldn't be part of the trade.

The Mariners can essentially "buy" prospects from other teams if they eat more salary of these bloated contracts which I think is something they should be doing. I know that this is a business, and you need to make the money aspect of everything work, but even if the Mariners run a deficit, the franchise generally appreciates around 4% or more each year regardless of the on-field performance. For a franchise worth $1.4b, that's $58m a year. If you look at it from that perspective (which I think you should if you want to build a strong franchise), the Mariners ownership can afford to run a deficit and still be making money each year in terms of franchise evaluation.

The Yankees are a strong candidate for Carlos Santana, but I really hope it comes along with a substantial prospect haul and not another fucking contract swap. Santana at least has value, Ellsbury would be pure dead money who likely wouldn't be worth much to any team.

Jean Segura trade grades: Phillies get a high mark while Mariners leave a lot to be desired

I think this has a pretty good write up.

I think they obtained Crawford with the mindset that he's a MLB ready player whose value has decreased a bit due to his 2018 performance. Who knows.

Not to mention they landed Pazos who is a solid left handed reliever who is pretty cheap. I'd figure that Pazos alone could land a mid-level prospect at the deadline.

Well, I guess on the bright side, the Mariners only have $29m in contract obligations right now for 2021 assuming that Mike Leake ($5m) and Carlos Santana ($500k) are bought out. But that's under the assumption that those two are on the team (unlikely) and LeBlanc is still on the team. Doesn't take into consideration arbitration money.

Will be a breath of fresh air to look at the Mariners payroll obligations and seeing not Felix + Cano eating up so much money.

I agree... they went cheap. Dipoto most likely wanted to send the 60mil to get McNeil but owneship stepped in and vetoed the offer. Don’t know if MLB rejected as well since there was cash transaction, it would require the commish approval. I’m leaning towards the side of ownership cheaping thru the trade.

“60 mil???!!!! Nahhh, lower it and see what you can get”

They went cheap and missed out on McNeil

D is a bit generous but look like the M’s will go all in with Crawford from this trade.

As for Santana, pretty much with the same mindset that they will flip him for something. He does have some value.

I wonder what kind of value he's got though. Maybe a mid round prospect or two?

So that'd make it Crawford and a couple mid level prospects for a top 10 All Star SS in his prime.

Well fuck fuck fuck.
How do they not get a prospect P tagged along with that deal?!? Well here’s to 4 more years of not making the playoffs until the rest of the prospects make their way through the farm. Well if they are going to shit the bed the next few years they better get number ones each of the next few years.

Jesus Christ, I wish the Mariners had anyone in the ownership group who cared about baseball. Do they not have access to cable? Jerry has been laughed at for the past year and a half by every national baseball person. Then he pulls this trade. I can not grasp for one second what this trade does for the franchise? So the Mets and Phillies both said no to what Jerry wanted then he just shrugs his shoulders and says ok I’ll do it your way.

And it just made me laugh looking back on the Montgomery trade, where said Vogelbach has future all star 1B written all over him.

Yeah, at the very best 1-2 mid level prospect(s). Continuing to take on undesirable contracts from other teams, while trading away your own undesirable contracts doesnt make any sense unless you try to flip for something in return.

Problem is... in order for someone to take on Santana’s contract, the M’s will have to take on someone’s contract for prospects.

Could see the M’s continue to be in a loop of undesirable contracts.

They could end up keep Santana to play DH for next couple years but his productivity will be no where near Cruz at 17mil when Cruz had an annual salary of 14mil. I rather that they resign Cruz

But you don’t trade one of your best players for guys you hope to flip. You trade prospects you have no use for for that. Kind of Jack Z did for Cliff Lee or have a Healy as the centerpiece. If he was going to pull a dumbass move like this, it is a deal you throw Seager in as a throw away trade so you cut your losses.

The biggest irony of all of this is in this trade Jerry dealt two of the biggest contracts as the Mariners GM he signed. Yippie, owners are happy to cut some salary while not realizing the only reason those two have such a high salary is because the dipshit they hired to use the Mariners as his little laboratory.

What's Dipoto's problem ? Even if the ownership knows nothing about baseball doesn't Dipoto know something ? The M's are getting weaker and it's gonna reflect on him...
