Of course they should have control, which is why FA exists.
But that is not the same as what's happening with Kawhi and you know that. He should fulfill his contractual obligation by playing - and keep his mouth shut while doing it & leave when it's his turn to explore FA.

Situations like these franchise guys forcing their way out of long term contracts is the ammunition these owners need as supporting factors to why they shouldn't give guys guaranteed money. SMH.

He will, and he has to. If he holds out, that year left on his contract remains. Who has ever forced their way out of a long term contract? Buyouts come at the behest of the team, not the player.

Do you honestly think it's better for the Spurs for Kawhi to have kept all of this to himself, played out his contract, then left the Spurs in a lurch next summer without having the opportunity to get something back for him? He had a terrible experience with his team, let it be known and gave his team plenty of opportunity to trade him before losing him outright. Their own refusal to accept the situation and act on it is only going to get them less in return the longer they drag this out.

You can embed tables here? How have I never known this until now? How did you do this sorcery?

Insert a code block and paste the formatted text into it. And it kinda formats into a table. Sorta.

Now the Sixers have a ball in their court. If Boston is really out, do they have to pay as much as they originally thought?? The only competition now appears to be the Lakers Kahwi is diminishing his value for the Spurs and for the teams who want him. *IF* Kahwi plays for Philly this year, will he be in as much demand as he thinks he will be in 2019? Will the money be there for a huge group of free agents that will be hitting the market??

Generally speaking, I agree that players should honor their contracts, play, keep their mouths shut and then leave during FA if they want out.

However, in the players defense, "forcing their way out" is their only option if they feel they need to leave before the contract is up.

If the team decides they need to move on from the player, they can just trade them or release them.

Covington, Saric, the Miami pick, and a Sixers own pick sounds like it would be a pretty fair deal for both sides if you ask me.

they cant get that kind of package of picks and players anywhere else really.

I have actually read that Miami is trying to get Leonard as well- but they are kind of behind the 8 ball since they have basically no picks to trade.

I would assume they would offer something like Richardson, Adebayo, Winslow.....etc.

I wouldn't past the Heat to go all in and think that the Miami lifestyle would be enough to keep Kawhi. It's the sort of gamble that Riley would make.

But giving up Richardson, Winslow and some picks seems awfully risky for them. Also the math gets pretty hazy.

Pretty sure that offer has already been rejected.

Pau Gasol is currently under contract with the San Antonio Spurs. If what I am hearing comes to fruition, that contract will be relocated to Philadelphia and the 7-foot Spaniard will be teaming up with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons next season. When you are having simultaneous conversations with people all around the world and not a single person is telling you “That is untrue,” you have a smoke/fire situation. And what I am hearing is that a trade scenario that would send Gasol to the 76ers is very much in play as one of the various Kawhi Leonard deals being pondered by the San Antonio Spurs

Well first off, he didn't do it in a professional way. If he felt some kind of way he should've kept that in house.

By not doing so he managed to tarnish each of their reputations - both of which had the utmost respect from just about everyone in and associated with the league. Was it really worth all of that in the end?

Agreed.

I just believe it's not what you do but how you do it.

I just saw a trade on the internets

Wolves Get:
Kawhi
2020 2nd round pick

Spurs get:
Jimmy Butler
Tyus Jones
Unprotected 2020 1st

I hate this trade so much I can almost guarantee Thibs will do it as he is the worst thing to ever happen to basketball. Why would you want to give up your best PG and an unprotected 1st just to have Kawhi walk after a year instead of Butler walking after a year.

Well, Kyrie did have the Spurs at the top of his list and he and Jimmy are rumored to want to play together....

I just don't see Kawhi staying.

Minny is about as far from the Sun and Fun of Los Angeles as you can get....

Outside of Keflavik Iceland and Adak Alaska.

Leonard is going to go to the Sixers.

Great fit for the Sixers

Sixers have the assets

Sixers have the Pop/Brown connection

This way he gets out of the West and they don't give him what he wants

Itll be based around Covington, Saric, Miami 1st rounder. The Spurs- for 1 year of Kawhi, could do a lot worse. Maybe they get another pick or two but i cant see them getting Fultz.

That trade doesn't make sense for either team.

The Wolves give up their best player in order to get someone who is better but they also give up Tyus Jones and an unprotected 2020 1st round pick? If Kawhi leaves next year, the Twolves are almost certainly a lottery team against for 2020.

For the Spurs, they replace a guy with one year left on his contract for ANOTHER guy with one year left on his contract who ALSO has injury concerns.

Reading rumors that Pao Gasol may be part of a Philly trade. Without another team being involved in the mix and assuming that the Sixers aren't trading Fultz it would seems the deal would be something like..

Leonard
Gasol

for

Saric
Covington
Bayless
Chandler
Justin Anderson
Whatever picks they agree to.

Bayless and Chandler are on expiring contracts so that would free up a ton of space.

I agree with that. I don't have a problem with Kawhi or any other player forcing his way out.

But Kawhi and his reps should have found a better way.

We'd have to include all 3 of those guys for it to work in terms of the Spurs getting quality assets. Probably would have to include TJ/Whiteside and take on a bad contract from the Spurs (probably Gasol). Still don't see it happening. But I'd be damned giddy if it did.
