Lots of Karlsson talk, but also this little nugget...

3. With Kris Versteeg out a long time, Calgary may look for a power-play specialist and someone who brings edge to their game. They feel a little “too nice,” outside of Travis Hamonic, Micheal Ferland, Mike Smith and Matthew Tkachuk. I could see the Flames part of a growing group eying Buffalo’s Evander Kane.

If Kane ends up traded I hope he doesn't show up to Calgary in a tracksuit...

Kane is an expiring contract - I could see Vegas dealing for him to solidify their Cup run this year.

Jack Johnson is expiring too. They should get him also.

Please send Karlsson back!

Bergevin didn’t make it easy. He aimed high and never wavered. It’s believed that, when Los Angeles inquired, Bergevin’s ask involved
Tyler Toffoli, 2017 first-rounder Gabriel Vilardi and possibly more. The Kings quickly said no. Another belief: He asked Minnesota for Charlie Coyle-plus, also a no.

One of Pacioretty’s preferred destinations is Florida. GM Dale Tallon is close with Bergevin. I suspect the Canadiens targeted
Vincent Trocheck. The Panthers weren’t doing that.

You get the idea. Montreal valued Pacioretty and refused to make a panic move at the buzzer.

Montreal's been out of it since, latest, December. How would this be a panic move at the buzzer? NYR decided two weeks ago to rebuild and they moved Nash and McDonagh for a boatload of stuff. Can Bergevin only negotiate in French?

Further, Patches has as many points as Toffoli this year. Why would he think he can get Toffoli + a high prospect + more? They're about the same playoff point wise as well.

Maybe Bergevin doesn't realize Pacioretty is a UFA after next season and his team is better off not keeping him around until then.

He also implies that Ottawa expected teams to both pay a high price and take Bobby Ryan in any Karlsson trade.

I'm no GM but that doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

43 already alluded to the JJ Sucks to Mtl.

this is quite something that Vegas was somewhat close to getting Karlsson!
sheeeit, that would have changed things. They didn't want to give up Cody Glass.

also interesting, that controller OV unplugged moment was a turning point for the Caps,
as the players deemed it unacceptable.

This summarizes my thoughts perfectly

31. Years from now, when we’re all gossiping over Mahjong at the retirement homes, I hope we look back at the last 12 months as a time hockey changed for the better.

I’m not talking as much about the play, but the presentation.

When the puck drops, it’s about the game, and it always should be about the game, but the celebrations around it are going to a new level, and it needs to happen even if future sites don’t include Nashville and Las Vegas.

Some things might not work, but we shouldn’t be afraid to try – I’m told Hockey Operations wouldn’t allow fire on the ice, which is probably a good call. (For example, if Toronto ever gets in, I want to see Drake sitting on the CN Tower – for real.)

As a reporter, the last two Cup finals have been among the best things I’ve covered because they were fun and different. I think the fans and players liked it, too.

Sometimes, we confuse personality for selfishness. That’s wrong. Yes, the lines can blur on a person-to-person basis, but it’s time hockey allowed its players to show themselves on social media, to wear something stylish but different to the rink, to step out from its conservative nature.

If you really want to sell and grow the game, that matters to the “reality generation.” And, I’d bet that the vast majority of players who took advantage would still be serious and competitive when it mattered.

I find that hard to believe. If someone offers up Erik Karlsson, who in their right mind says no because of Cody Glass??

If Vegas did they're pretty goddam dumb.

Vegas needs some sort of future. For a team that had three guys signed beyond 2020 and a grand total of ten prospects I'm guessing trading the best of those prospects was probably not in their best interests.

to clarify, it was for 1 year of Karlsson. no guarantees after that
no way vegas thought it would get this far this season, even at the deadline
with so many UFAs this year (remember, the were build to sell at the deadline for more picks), they don't really know what next year will look like
for their development, there is very little in the next few years - what with no farm team and all - so their expected window is more like 4-5 years from now when these early draft picks start to develop.

Karlsson will be approaching mid-30s by then

but in hindsight, jeez, he would have helped.

It is worth mentioning that they gave up a 1-2-3 for Tatar which seemed kinda steep even before he totally sucked.

In that regard, maybe just throwing in Cody Glass and getting Karlsson instead of a fish and chip condiment would've been worth it.

Sharp eyes on Hrudey:
4. Kelly Hrudey showed during last week’s pre-game show how Carey Price has moved his legs closer together, providing video evidence of a six-inch difference between his skates from 2017–18 to 2018–19. In the short-term the adjustment looks good, as he stopped 44 of the 48 shots he faced in nearly ruining the Maple Leafs’ home opener and blowing out the Penguins. The Canadiens wanted to see him regain his swagger, and felt the first week was a great opportunity for that.

Two things stood out: Price celebrating when the Canadiens got to overtime in the Ontario capital, knowing that would be good for confidence. Second was a lengthy solo practice with goalie coach Stephane Waite Tuesday in Montreal. Years ago, then-Canadiens coach Jacques Martin complained about Price’s work habits, wanting to see him work as hard on the ice as Patrick Roy would after a bad performance. Price is putting in the time after good work.

First, to be clear, he is talking about how far apart his skates are in his stance, not that he's switched to speed skates.

This goes to show why elite goalies stay elite and why some guys can come out of the gate great and then disappear after a few years. Coaches get a book on a guy, and if they are not willing to adapt they will get exposed. Guys like Felix Potvin, Steve Mason, Tomas Vokoun are some examples of this. Matt Murray is looking to be heading down that path right now. They have success and don't change anything and expect it to continue.Guys like Luongo, Price, Hank all continue to adjust and adapt.

Price is getting the benefit of faster transitions side to side and the angle of his skate blade is making his launch to position a bit faster. It seems to be working.

It's a natural part of the aging process too. Younger guys can rely on speed and reflexes to compensate for poor form or positioning, but as they age and the gloves slow, being in the right position and having more efficient movements is critical.
