26. How do exceptions count against the cap? Does being under the cap always mean that a team has room to sign free agents? Do teams ever lose their exceptions?
If a team is below the cap, then its Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level (either the Taxpayer or Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level, whichever applies to the team) and/or trade exceptions are added to their team salary, and the league treats the team as though they are over the cap1. This is to prevent a loophole, in a manner similar to free agent amounts (see question number 37). A team can't act like it's under the cap and sign free agents using cap room, and then use its Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level and/or trade exceptions. Consequently, the exceptions are added to the team salary (putting the team over the cap) if the team is under the cap and adding the exceptions puts them over the cap. If a team is already over the cap, then the exceptions are not added to their team salary. There would be no point in doing so, since there is no cap room for signing free agents.


My reading of that would lead me to believe they cannot use cap room to sign free agents, and then use the mid level exception in the same year.

Sixers center Joel Embiid said he embraced Wade at the end of the series in case Wade decides to retire.

"I had to pay my respects because I don't know if this is it or if he has another year, but he's a great player and a Hall of Famer," Embiid said.

Wade was complimentary of the young Sixers after the series.

"I think they grew up and learned some things from us and the way we pushed them," Wade said. "You want to see good things. I mean, these guys are the future of the NBA, and the NBA is in great hands with Ben [Simmons] and Joel and those guys."

Very glad to see that Wade is setting a great example for these young guys.

meh, the Heat organisation is typically good at doing their homework and getting things done in the past. not saying these times aren't challenging, but their usually able to sort things out...

that said, obviously changes there are coming. gonna be an interesting off season for them...

Well I think right now they are in a tough spot. No cap space and no draft picks.

I just havent understood what Riley has tried to do the last few years. He sacrificed all his cap space and all his draft picks and really does not have a lot to show for it other than Goran Dragic in his walk year, a solid 3 and D player in Richardson, a 3-D player that has had some injury issues but still has a lot of talent in Winslow, and a solid role player floor spreader in Olynk.

Whiteside, Waiters, J. Johnson, T. Johnson just seem like overpaid role players. As a Cavs fan- i know how much overpaid role players can restrict you in making moves.

The bummer part for the Heat is that even if they decided to tear it all down and tank for the next 2 years until they have tons and tons of cap space, they dont have a first rounder this year, and they odnt have a first rounder 2 years from now- and i think that first rounder 2 years from now is unprotected.

If Riley can salvage this mess he has created then I will be extremely impressed and recant on my oft repeated stance that he has lost his fastball.

@TurnUpTheHeat fails to accept that stars win in the NBA- and as this guy says-- a gaggle of gritty role players isnt equavalent to a superstar.

Stars always have, currently do, and always will, win in the NBA. Either you have them or you are trying to acquire them. Gritty, deep, hardworking teams of role players just dont go anywhere the vast vast majority of the time.

Waiters- Nah, this is what role players are getting paid now. 12 mil isn't that much and I actually like his contract more than the other 3 once he can stay healthy from this point on.

JJ- Not a big fan of it but don't think they overpaid that much. Think he would have likely gotten 11-13 mil yearly had he gone elsewhere. Had a really good season

Yup. Too many fans hope that their team can become the next 2004 Pistons. The problem is that there is a reason why people talk about that Pistons squad. It was really exceptional in its composition.

What Can You Do About Hassan Whiteside?
There isn’t a clear-cut strategy to match up against a team like Philadelphia. Whiteside has only two inches on its starting point guard; his assignment at center, Joel Embiid, has a tendency to leave the painted area, where Whiteside is most comfortable, and explore beyond the range of a typical 7-footer, where Whiteside is helpless. In crucial moments this series, it wasn’t Whiteside’s name that Spoelstra called. With the way the game continues to change, that lack of faith in their $98 million man could be the new normal.

Chalk it up to a lack of rhythm if you’re feeling charitable. Whiteside was injured for three stretches throughout the season, missing a total of 28 games. But even when he was active, the Heat’s numbers were better with him off the floor. Whiteside started every game he’s played this season but was limited to 25 minutes per game in what amounted to keep him happy playing time. In the playoffs, his already-winnowed minutes average shrank to 15.4. Without those minutes keeping him happy, there was nothing stopping him from looking like this:

Dumping him is the best solution, but with the 28-year-old making $52 million over the next two seasons, it might be impossible.

Waiters, if he can be healthy, is a decent deal, but he hasnt been both healthy and good for long enough for anyone to take a shot at him i nthe trade market in my opinion.

JJ i think is a solid role player- but hes a guy you add once you have your core guys---- like a TT with the Cavs.....if hes plugging up cap room that prevents you from chasing a star- its not good-- if hes signed to augment a couple studs i actually think hes not a bad play.

Tyler is just overpaid because of the balloon payment/poison pill the Nets put in his contract--- it should have been averaged over 4 years but since the Nets backloaded there offer- the Heat had to match- hence like 6 million a year in the first 2 years and 19 million a year in the last two years. 2 years 38 million for Tyler Johnson is rough.

also- i forgot Bam in here who looks like he can be a very solid "big" - that can play D against 4's and 5's- but also be versatile enough to switch the PnR and guard on the perimeter. Hes athletic enough to be a solid roller and finisher on the pick and rolls. Honestly- its funny but he really does remind me of a young TT before he lost his balls in a lot of ways.

Richardson, Winslow, Bam, Olnyk, Dragic are the Heat's positive pieces if you ask me. 2 draft picks in the next 4 drafts is certainly less than ideal--- and like the Cavs- highly unlikely to have any cap room either this offseason or next offseason.
