The first car I seriously considered purchasing as a teenager was a Mercury Cougar XR7 Brougham (I think it was a 1971 model). I had saved up a little dough, but I wasn't working full-time, so I decided the $4340.00 they were asking for it was a little too steep. It's funny that I still remember the price more than 40 years later, but I can't recall what I paid for the car I settled on.

I ended up with a 1970 (I think) Oldsmobile Delta 88. It seems like it had a 454 V-8. Whatever it was, it was powerful & finely tuned. You didn't hear it or feel it when you cranked it up - which startled a friend of mine who was riding with me to a ball game - he was in the passenger seat when I put it in gear to back out of the driveway & he nearly jumped out of his seat. "How did you do that? I didn't hear it crank up," he said, with a startled look on his face. I just laughed.

That sucker had power, too. You could be out on the highway and give the accelerator a nudge and jump from 40 to 70 in just a couple of seconds. And that was on the plain old blacktop. Get out on the interstate and it would FLY! I kept that baby for about 10 years before I finally gave it up.

FYI, Oldsmobile would have been a 455.

My first was a '74 Malibu Classic 2 door identical to this. 350 2 barrel, vinyl interior.

The one I wanted was a '74 Jade Thunderbird Identical to this. 460 4 barrel, Jade luxury edition with every option Ford had. I'm still disappointed I missed it.

A good friend of mine, his mother had one of these Thunderbirds, think it was a same year, with the 460.
My cousin also had a 1974? Ford Elite that was awesome.

The first car I wanted, but didn't buy, could have been any number of Detroit muscle cars from 1966-1972, but I was extremely partial to the Plymouth Road Runners:

probably the most affordable, best bang-for-buck performance vehicle of the style/period.

The one I actually bought, my first, was a '70 Dodge Dart, aka the knockoff of the RR:

Mine was almost identical to this one, light blue with a white vinyl top. Mostly stock, no hood cowls, no bumblebee stripe, not the "Swinger" version, but an extremely peppy .318.

One of my older brothers had a 71 Cutlass Supreme, all black, not sure what the powerplant was, but it was extremely fast. Don't think it was the big block, probably had the 350?

I have never bought a car I really wanted, I have gone with cheap in my financial range. Always bare bones functional. I have been putting a car payment into savings ever since I paid off my last car 4 years ago. I am planning to for the first time to buy something I really want. However my tastes have changed, the first car I really wanted was 350Z.

Now though I am getting a midsize truck. Not sure which, kind of keeping my eye on the Ranger, want to see how it doeas after it's first year back.

One of my cousins, who was a few years older than me, had a Roadrunner Super Bee. And my mother's sister (who was only five years older than me) had a gold & white Chevelle Super Sport that she let me drive on occasion.

When I was 16, my grandmother offered to sell me her car for $1,500 and I said no.
