I went and computed something. (I have nothing else to do).
I computed the 10 best current P5 teams, by winning pct, by decade beginning
with 1940. I did not include the current on-going decade which still has two
years to go.
After compiling the list I removed all the teams that have won a NC since 1936. (Poll era)
Now, that meant I removed 7 SEC teams, 7 Big10 teams, 6 ACC teams, 3 Big12 teams
and 2 Pac12 teams.
I took the remaining teams and listed what, if any, decade they were in the Top 10 in winning
pct.
SEC Ole Miss in the 50's and 60"s
Arkansas in the 60's
Missouri in the 60's.
ACC
VPI in the 00's
Big12
(None)
Big10
Rutgers in the 40's
Pac12
Ariz St in the 50's and 70's
UCLA in the 50's, 60's and 80's
Thus UCLA has to be the best to have never won a NC OR, at the minimum, they must be
in the conversation.
Hmm not sure then . Maybe it wasn't 58. Iowa has won 5 but only claims 1. Thought it was 58. I could be wrong
Weird. I wonder why they claim that one but not the others then ? I figured it was just because they actually deserved it that year . If we are claiming one like that then we would have 5 lolThey claim 1958, but they're getting close to Bama territory by claiming it.
LSU was 11-0 and was the top ranked team by every major poll.
Iowa was 8-1-1

Big12
(None)
Big10
Rutgers in the 40's (they were independents back then)
Pac12
Ariz St in the 50's and 70's (Sun Devils spent the 50's in the Border Conference; most of the 70's in the WAC)
UCLA in the 50's, 60's and 80's

To qualify, they may have won FCS championships, but they've never been declared "National Champions" by the PTBs.North Dakota State.
A list in college football where it pains me to put Oregon at the top.
Oregon is the type to celebrate new uniforms and make books comemorating second place seasons. If you think I’m joking check out this gen I found in the bargin bin at Barnes and Nobles...I have no idea, but I bet right now Oregon is looking over at UCF thinking "You can do that?"
