We might be able to make this work if Kirk doesn't decide to be a dick. Play chicken and refuse to sign it and see who blinks first. We cant carry his cap numbers for very long and he could wait us out. But if he waits us out he might miss out on going to a team he really wants as they move on without him. In the end, I doubt this works out for us at all. It's too late, damage has been done and the cards we hold are very weak.

KC would not be a dick at any point in any of this. He owes this franchise nothing. Why would he do anything to help this franchise now?

We can trad Alex Smith. What makes your brother believe we can get more than KC got for him?

We may be able to trade KC after we tag him. The second he signs the franchise tag is the second his next contract becomes more expensive.

Follow...

1- He signs the tag which is worth 35 million in 2018.

2- He signs an extension with whomever of the current contract worth 30 million per season.

If there is no tag, there is no contract to extend, so there is no new money...it is just a contract worth 30 million per season.

A shrewd move that will almost certainly be fucked up by our idiot-in-charge, Bruce Allen.

Tag KC with the "two first rounders" tag, whichever that is.

Tell him to negotiate with whomever he'd like, tell other teams that the asking price starts at the picks the redskins gave up - third this year, pick next year.

If nobody signs KC, have him compete with smith. Have a kickass qb squad.
Remind KC that nobdoy will need a qb next year - perhaps he should lower his demands.
Or trade Alex Smith, and draft a qb anyway.

I would think it would be easier to trade for KC than to buy him on the open market too.

Again, this is an incredibly ballsy move that has a high potential to be completely bungled by Bruce Allen.

But there IS precedence here: Iggles with Chase Daniel and Sam Bradford, after drafting Carson Wentz.

still own his rights because the tag was placed on him and they can still try and trade him
No, they can't trade him unless he is under contract. Which means he has to sign the tag.

OK. I had some running to do this morning.

I got some time to really contemplate on this while the smoker comes up to temp.... so here goes.

How could this work for the Redskins??

They Tag Kirk, allow him to talk to other teams. How it benefits the other teams is that while they are still basically in a bidding war for Kirk as far as money goes, depending on what they have to give up in the trade, a deal in principle for Cousins means they DONT have to have QB as a primary need. This might be worthwhile for the team(s) in question.. again depending on the compensation.

How this could really fuck up??

They tag Kirk without having some kind of agreement in place first with Kirk, and secondly on a list of teams Kirk either

1. Cant talk to
2. Doesn't want to talk to.

If they tag him, he has to sign it in order to be traded. If he signs it and we CANT trade him, we also likely cant trade Smith based on the bonus money agreed to in his new deal. In effect, if this goes really bad we would have upwards of $50M committed to the QB position on this years cap.

So long and short for any of this to work, the guy they just blind sided needs to be willing to do them a solid.

IN the end, this all sounds like classic Snyder building up hype and excitement during the off season.

It's not doing the redskins a solid. It's a business decision.

KC absolutely played the tag correctly to maximize his own return.

He SHOULD realize that the redskins are considering doing the exact same thing.

Agreeing to be tagged so that the Redskins can try to recoup something for him WOULD be Cousins doing them a Solid. Because he could simply NOT sign the tag, at which point the Redskins have to sit on $35M in cap space. He could also sign it and refuse to work out a long term deal with the team he is traded to, which lowers his trade value considerably.

IN order for the Redskins to get anything of value above the 3rd round Comp pick they might get next year, they Need Kirk to play ball on this move.

Yeah, but if he doesn't sign the tag, he doesn't play this year. And if he sits out the year, his salary does not hit the cap. I recognize that the timing of him coming off the cap is not ideal, but its moot as KC will not sit out this year. He will sign the tag.

Actually put yourself in his shoes.

He knows that if the Skins tag him, until and unless he signs the tag, they cant do anything else in free agency. Unless they would be willing to risk pissing Smith off by asking him to hold off on signing his new deal.

yep exactly until he signs the tag the 34 million doesn't apply to our cap he would screw himself because a lot of teams will not wait they will move on and that will limit his options

no incorrect if the Redskins tag him he has to sign it in order for the 34 million to be against the cap

Actually WRONG.. the moment they apply the tag signed or not, it counts against our cap. Look I know you wanted him gone, and I know you think Bruce made some masterful stroke. BUt tagging Cousins to once again try to prove how smart he is, will likely blow up in Bruces face.

You are mistaking counting against the cap, and being guaranteed.

The moment we tag him, it counts against our cap. Its only guaranteed once he signs.

So yes in real terms it wont count against our cap unless he signs.

BUt if we tag him, we must maintain enough cap space to PAY the tag should he sign. So for all intents, if we tag him, that's $35M we cant use else where until we remove the tag.
