So we'd get Denver's pick at 5 if he does sign with the Broncos? Or are you talking some type of sign n trade deal?

To be honest, I'm not sure how or if there's going to be compensation at this point. Which tag is effectively at the disposal of the team is at question as well. So until there's clarity on these points, I can't give you a reasonable answer to your question.

I waned to point out where Denver selects for informational purposes only.

The only compensation if he leaves as a FA is a compensatory 3rd rd pick, I believe. to get Denver's 1st, we have to have him under contract and trade him or designate a tag for him and work out a trade.

Correct on all counts, however, there are grey areas in the CBA with concerns to which tag is available to the team.

Actually there is no grey area.

As this would be the third time he is tagged we can either trans tag him, or Exclusive tag him. Tag rules say if a player has been tagged twice, the non exclusive tag cant be used.

So if we trans tag him we get no compensation but can march a deal.

If we franchise him we can allow him to talk to other teams, but we then become subject to the Champ Bailey rule where in Denver gave us an over rated RB for an elite corner and a 2nd round pick.

Not quite, there's nothing in the CBA that says the Non-exclusive tag cannot be used. In fact the CBA is written in a way that outlines what governs a third tagged player and not which tag can or cannot be used. Therein lies the rub, it's ambiguous, and therefore allows them to use the non-exclusive tag...to what end is not clear.

Interesting take. The only real reason I could see them using either franchise tag is simple.

They cant let Cousins go for nothing. And if they don't tag him and settle for the 3rd round comp pick in 2019, it puts Bruce on the hot seat to find a better QB than Cousins right away.

Also an interesting take and while I agree with all of it, there are other things to consider.

Maybe Bruce actually wants Kirk to stay, and as long as Dan doesn't object he will continue to tag him if all efforts to sign a LT deal fail.

With or without Kirk, it is not Bruce who will be on the hot seat, but Gruden. With Kirk the measure will be what two of his former assistants are doing with their teams and without Kirk, the measure will be his failure to turn what's likely to be spun as a great replacement into success. If nothing else, Bruce Allen has mastered the CYA employment tactic.

I took the time to re-read the CBA and discovered what's not included. Now, I know that what I'm about to post will greatly disturb a majority here, but there's nothing in the CBA concerning tagging a 4th year. At first blush, one immediate reaction would be...THAT"S CRAZY/INSANE right? However, has that same reaction not been used two years running? I personally, would not put it past Bruce Allen, of course with Dan Snyder's approval.

Well, if you are going to set a record, make it unbeatable. We are already the first team in history to play a QB on the tag for two years...why not go for four?

If you can’t be famous Bruce Allen, you might as well be infamous.

Oh I believe that Bruce is on the hot seat with the fans. History tells us that Vinny was on the hot seat with the fans for years before he was dismissed. I expect the same thing now.

We have a very different definitions of "hot seat."

Vinny didn't have major connections in the state of VA that could help Snyder get something that he covets dearly. In this case I would really, really love to be wrong!

I think a bunch of us feel the same way.
