Remember the thread last year down the stretch? Yeah, we saw improvement. Can we claim the same this season? Here is some data from the last few games:

WVU: avg 485 yds/36.3 pts per game avg.** (again, these stats include the OU game so their averages would have been even greater if the OU game stats weren't included).

Against OU they got 387 yds and 31 pts. We know that the majority of those yards gained were on the ground where McKoy and Crawford averaged 5.6 per carry. That is on the front 7 not being assingment sound, too late in the season for this sort of thing to be occurring. Also the last points were all on reserve defensive players.

All this has a big grain of salt in that Grier was hurt. All of this equates -21% yds & -14% pts.

@ KU: avg 329 yds/22.6 pts. per game avg. **

155 yds and 3 pts. Enough said. -53% yards & -87% pts. OU football.

TCU
: 422 yds/34.5 pts per game avg.*** (allowed more yards, so exclude the OU game and their yards per game avg. would have been less)
Against OU 424 yds and 20 pts. Defense shouldered the whole second half themselves due to the very conservative, clock-eating offensive gameplan after halftime. We allowed 2 more yds than the average but allowed 14.5 less pts. +.004 yds & -42% pts.

@ OSU
: 576 yds per game avg and 46.3 pts per game avg.**** (allowed more yards and points, no bueno)
661 yds and 52 pts. This was reminiscent of the TTU game last year. Pure boat race. Mike Stoops gets no raise this year if I'm the admin. This is unacceptable. +14% yds &+12% pts.

TTU
: 326/34.3 average vs. game result 437/27.*** (allowed more yards) gave up more yards but allowed less points. +34% yds & -21% pts.

@ KSU: 378/32.1 averages **** 412/35. **** Again gave up more of both. +8% yds & +9% pts.

I think it's safe to say that after he put the fresh meat out there in the secondary, we've been marginally better. 250, 32, 155, & 213 have been what we've allowed on the ground in the past 4 games. I don't know how to fix that other than keep a thicker outside linebacker in more of the time with his knuckles in the dirt on obvious running plays.

Here's to continued success of some sort or another. :suds:

Improving, maybe.

When Bob upgraded the Offensive staff a few years ago, he forgot to do the same on the Defensive side of the ball.

It's no coincidence that the Offense has taken huge strides forward.

The Defense is a crap shoot in any game we play.
Is it enough to slow down Georgia??? I hope so.

We will need a perfect "A" game from the offense to win the next game and the game after that because I'd be surprised if the Defense gets the job done. If they can just slow them down a little, we might could outscore them.

I'm going to be severely disappointed in Lincoln Riley if he doesn't make some changes on Defense this off season.

I’ve actually got a little more faith than you for two reasons.

1) Mike actually tends to do pretty well against these traditional 1 dimensional offenses. He usually doesn’t produce a complete shut down performance but he’s able to force teams like Auburn and Ohio state into 3rd and long situations enough times to get stops. In neither of those games did we shut down their running game, but Mike kept figuring out how to put their offense behind the chains at the right times. Georgia better come out and score early because one thing I will say about mike is as infuriating as he can be, once he makes his second half adjustments it’s over for the other team as long as the offense doesn’t fall apart.

2) On a more long term note, I’m hearing we really are moving back toward more of a 4-3 which is why we really are focusing on loading up on guys who can play the 3 tech instead of a bunch of 0/1 tech guys. The 4-3 is what Mike cut his teeth on. He’s never felt comfortable in a 3-4 and that’s been obvious. It will also allow us to attack more from our line. I do think we need to get rid of Kish unless he pulls a rabbit out of his hat this year. No excuse for starting Emanuel fucking Beal at a program like Oklahoma.

I agree with all of that.
It's just a shame that we don't have a Defense anywhere near the level of our Offense.

I just don't see how we are going to win back to back games and win an NC with our defense.
I just don't see it happening

Hope I'm wrong.

The only team that worries me is Clemson. I don’t think Georgia or Bama has enough offense to keep up. I may end up eating my hat. We’ll see. I didn’t think we’d hold Ohio state to less than 20 but we did and held them to 3 in the first half despite multiple offensive fuck ups.

Hey guys let add my 2 cents. Sorry our D is well it's bad!!!!!!! We need another pass rusher that's one problem and we have other problems also. But to start being a better Def team we have to start with tackling. Bad def teams have major problems with TACKLING. This is part of the reason why our def routinely gives up big plays one after another. I have and I am sure everyone here have seen this issue all season long. I want you guys look at this data on CFB film room.

Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia - College Football Film Room

Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma - College Football Film Room

Look under def stats and count the missed tackles under the MT category for each team. Very interesting stat inregards who is a better tackling team. Georgia!!!!!!!!!

Now if Georgia attack us on the perimeter and make our cb tackle sooner or later they will break one. So you see if we can improve on the tackling, this will go a long ways in helping us beat Georgia who are really like romero has said they are a one "dimensional team". If we don't tackle better then Georgia will look like the best team in the entire world.

Please leave toast Thomas on the bench.

Yeah. We have problems all over the field.
I'm with you on the tackling. It seems fundamental, but we lack it.

It's coaching.
I'm a firm believer that you play the way you practice.
And that doesn't give a very pretty report card to the Defensive coaches.

If the Offense hadn't fallen asleep in the 3rd Quarter, we win the game.
WTF happened.

Don’t know WTF happened, but the 2nd half play calling by Riley sucked rocks...

Still OU had this game in the bag, that’s what really sucks.

If the defense could stop them in the final minutes we win. Georiga had no special offense, no trickery just ran us over. Mike stoops schemes suck balls. I can't blame Riley. He lightened up on the calls but the defense time and time again shows it's ass. We will never be title contenders until the defense has playmakers. Recruiting, scheme, development, coaching all of it on the D side is insufficient.

I don’t disagree that Stoops needs to go.

So who does Riley go after to replace him?

1st Georgia drive:
3 and out.

2nd Georgia drive:
Big guys couldn't shed blocks and OLBs focused on driving play inside rather than playing gap, resulting in breakdown in gap coverage.
They spread the vertical spaces with playaction, just like we do.
Murray biting on playaction resulted in their first touchdown.

3rd Georgia drive:
First play Ward, Kelly and PMott all screw the pooch.
3rd and 3 Obo gets caught in the middle (pass/rush) resulting in 1st down. Not sure if scheme caused this or Obo failed his assignment.
Next first down Ga. BIG set and PMott comes on corner blitz, LBs must rotate toward corner blitz to contain releasing back/TE, they don't resulting in TE releasing for easy out 1st down catch.
3rd down at 2:42 of 1st quarter Murray comes out for dime? Bring Obo on pressure and force 4th down. Punt.

4th Georgia drive:
First play Murray and Norwood overpursue fake handoff to crossing WR with no eyes on backfield. Michel easily reaches second level, 75 yard touchdown. One of them should have been in that gap. Have to assume again it was Murray blowing his assignment as he would have been spy on backfield.

5th drive:
Forced a punt.

6th drive:
First play Murray shoots 2 gap with no visibility of backfield movement only looking at directional blocking. Chubb gets to 2nd level and Johnson way too slow to react taking bad angle. 45 yard rush.
Next play Parker comes on strong-side blitz for a sack.
2nd down Norwood gets lucky defending on an underthrown ball. Force punt.

I'm not gonna dissect the 2nd half. Way too many instances of guys expecting someone else to make a play. I don't think we were schematically sound against Georgia from the get-go. Just like we had prepared for a Big XII team. Again, the same refrain, NOT ENOUGH PRESSURE on obvious passing downs. When we brought solid pressure Fromm had NO time to do anything. They brought more pressure on us in the 2nd half and look what happened.

The knee on the late tackle that Baker took halfway through the third hurt him more than he or the staff were willing to admit. You didn't see too many deep balls or good mobility after that.

After the scoop and score I thought it was over....
When we got the ball in the first OT I thought it was over...
When we got the first down in the 2nd OT I though it could be over...
When Seibert missed the short FG by it being blocked, I knew it was over...

Let’s be honest among ourselves. Oklahoma richly deserves its reputation for being soft. We’ve blown 5 chances when we have been playing games directly tied to winning National Championships just since 2000. Go back before that and we blew very winnable games against Miami, Texas, Nebraska and Arkansas over the years that cost us more NC’s.

OU has won 1 National Championship in the past 30 years. Think about that. One NC when we have had multiple Heisman, Outland, O’Brien, etc. award winners plus all those All-American players.

We win a lot of games but there is absolutely no traditional killer instinct at OU. Barry’s teams had it a little more than Bob’s teams ever did but now Lincoln Riley’s first team was horrendous at closing the deal when we blew 5 big leads this season that finally caught up with us in the Rose Bowl. That’s pretty amazing when we had 3 first team All-Americans on our offense including this year's Heisman Trophy winner.

I simply don’t tolerate consistent losing. It happens from time to time to any organization or individual but when failing with all the chips are on the table becomes your trademark over 30 years that is inexcusable. Winning more than my fair share is all that counts in my world.

And, sorry, but I don’t care about conference championships. I’d give up a butt load of conference championships to win an undisputed National Championship. Somewhere along the way OU got comfortable with consistent conference dominance instead of the occasional national dominance.

If Lincoln Riley doesn’t toughen up dramatically and change the culture at OU, then things will stay exactly the same. I just don’t want to watch the same thing keep happening anymore. I have my opinion about what it will take to win NC’s again. But what it would take might cost too much and it wouldn’t be worth it in the long run. Who knows? Just don’t expect things to change much from the way they have been, guys. OU now has a culture that has developed into something the school, the athletic department and the fans have accepted. The stadium is always full, the money keeps rolling in and things always settle back down after another ugly loss like the Rose Bowl. People I know are complaining to the athletic department about Mike Stoops (again!) but it’s going to take more than just firing Stoops to win another National Championship.

I have three projects around the country just getting started that I need to stay on top of so I won’t be posting much anymore. Hope everyone has a safe and happy 2018.

Hope all goes well for you GB, I appreciate your take on things.

We are an anomaly. I honestly think we've overachieved many times given the recent state of College Football (say last 12 years or so) for teams outside of the SEC and/or more major markets.

Where have most of the playoff/BCS participants been from? Recruiting hotbeds in the South. We aren't texas. We aren't 'Bama. We used to be! But lately we've been the respectable team that used to be dynastic.

We used to be able to rest on the laurels of our name alone, but the combinations of:
1. Media narrative
2. Media neglect unless it's negative news
3. Lack of killer instinct since I can't remember when
4. Insertion of the want for greater academia
5. Brain drain
6. Pursuit of a forthright program
have all contributed to OU being meh. None of the recruits coming in tomorrow will have even been born the last time we won an NC.

There will be some compromises made if we are to become dynastic again, some of those compromises might include legitimacy. I don't know if I'm ready to go that far, as that would be moving backwards...back to the way things USED to be. The win at all costs mentality cost us some bowl games and TV money.

Yeah we should have won a few of those, I'm with ya. I'm gonna give the new guy another year or two before I throw up my hands and walk away.
