Can We rename the thread Best Based on WAR?? In no way is WAR the best test for SP... especially when it overweighs longevity, and overweighs innings pitched...

Are you really telling me Mussina is better than Roy Halladay or Clayton Kershaw??

"Why not have a debate on it?"

It's merely a starting point. I also provided their Hall Rating rankings which weighs peak and longevity. So why don't you come up with your list?

Just wondering... what do you consider better... A player in a 5 season span being a top 5 pitcher, with at least ONE season as the BEST pitcher, or a player in a 10 season span being a top 10 pitcher but never being a top 5 guy??

Okay so the closest these guys could be are:

Player A:
Year 1- 5th best
Year 2- 5th best
Year 3- 5th best
Year 4- 5th best
Year 5- Best

Player B:
Year 1- 6th best
Year 2- 6th best
Year 3- 6th best
Year 4- 6th best
Year 5- 6th best
Year 6- 6th best
Year 7- 6th best
Year 8- 6th best
Year 9- 6th best
Year 10- 6th best

I'll take Player B

The thing with WAR though is that a pitcher generally needs quality innings to rack up any meaningful amount WAR...it's not like merely existing as a pitcher on the mound means you'll add to your WAR total significantly. Bartolo Colon was garbage this year but threw nearly 150 innings, but he had a -2 WAR (so pitching those innings didn't help him).

So I do think WAR is useful because it can gauge quality innings.

WAR for pitchers. Pleseeeee.
1. Wins
2.ERA
3.WHIP
4. Ks
5.IP
Those are the best stats to look at for pitchers.

I think when pitchers threw 7 or 8 innings every start, a win was worth something, provided his team had the lead.

I like WHIP just a little, though I think it's inexact, not unlike ERA.
