North by Northwest: 3/5 stars. Nice performances all around, especially from Grant, but the middle part of the movie dragged. I did really enjoy the suspense that was built up at the house in South Dakota in the last 30 minutes of the film.

Also, this shit was hilarious:

Great movie

Yeah, I don't think it's a classic or one of the greatest movies of all time like others (not to disparage their views or anything, I just don't agree with it myself), but I did enjoy it.

Still, I like Vertigo (4.5/5 stars) and Rope (4/5 stars) from Hitchcock better.

The airplane scene is a certified classic. In some ways I think it helped inspire the Bond films with their cool, sauve secret agent types.

Yeah, I've heard that as well, that it was, in effect, the first James Bond film.

Seeing Jaws for the first time tonight with my father, before I move into my apartment before school starts. It's his favorite movie of all time. We shall see...

Jaws: 3.5/5 stars. All three lead performances were very good, but Robert Shaw in particular shined. In fact, if you take out Shaw's character or even just his performance, I don't think the film is as critically acclaimed as it is.

I would not go as far as to say that the film is one of the greatest of all time (though, many films I see that are regarded as "the greatest of all time" often fall short to me. On the flip side, the films that I consider to be among the greatest of all time are often not perceived that way, except for maybe The Departed or The Dark Knight), but I did enjoy it for the most part. Honestly, the first half was a little slow for me, but I suppose it was necessary to set up the kick-ass last half where they're all on the boat together. That part was pretty fucking awesome.

In fact, Spielberg himself said that that was his favorite part of the novel, and that he would keep that part in tact perfectly, but that he wanted to change the screenplay for the first half.

Also, maybe I heard wrong, but I could have sworn this film is considered a horror. I beg to differ. Maybe thriller, but I'd much sooner call it a drama.

Hell or High Water: 4.5/5 stars.

Now THIS is how you make a modern Western (or a neo-western for the Western snobs out there). While I haven't seen too many films from the genre, this is now my new favorite Western, surpassing The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (4.5/5 stars).

The cinematography of West Texas was incredible. It makes me want to move out there, and spit Kodiak into a coffee mug at a diner after just robbing a Texas Midlands bank.

The performances were also amazing. It's tough to choose between Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges as to who was better (probably Pine, but it's very close), but you can't forget Ben Foster. His character truly became sympathetic towards the end of the movie. If you had told me he would be a sympathetic character after the first scene of the movie, I'd tell you that you were full of shit.

None of the sequences felt cliched to me. In fact, I thought the climax (especially) and the ending as well were both pretty original. Some will call the ending anticlimactic, but I thought it fit the overall mood of the film, and was pretty realistic and still gave great closure.

Whoever picked Nick Cave to do the soundtrack deserves a million dollars, along with Nick himself getting a million bucks.

The film was so good, I'll even endorse a sequel.

Always amazes me that the guy who was so blah as such a blah character in Sons of Anarchy is turning into the king of writing a screen play.

Not that acting and writing go hand in hand at all, I just find it funny. He was written off SOA because he thought he deserved more money playing that garbage deputy.

But he's nailed it with Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River

Took the kid to see The Nut Job: 2. Great movie to fall asleep to. My 7 year old liked it but he just likes going tot the movies. He kinda ruined it for me as he kept talking while I was trying to sleep.

Shot Caller.

Pretty good movie, honestly. I was lost for quite a bit but it all came around. I'm still confused on one part of it though. I'd recommend it.

Dunkirk....a brilliant piece of work!
Just saw this a few days ago and loved it. I will be visiting Dunkirk and Normandy in November when I travel France. Flying into Paris and taking the train up to the north coast. Really wanting to see Omaha and all of the sites from WWII.

Just watched Snowden. 7.5/10

These types of topics always interest me. Obviously it's Hollywood so you have to question the the overall accuracy but you get the gist. I was pleased from an entertainment perspective.

Miller's Crossing: 4/5 stars.

This is my second (or third, if you count the first time I watched it whilst on Vicodin and didn't remember any of it, which I don't count) time watching Miller's Crossing. I watched it with my father yesterday, as the last movie we watched together this summer (I moved into my apartment today).

I really fucking loved this movie the first time I watched it (sober), and thought that a re-watch would serve to increase my enjoyment of the film, and might even bump the score up a half star (of course, I did not go in with this agenda. Just a guess on my part).

Well, actually, the opposite nearly happened: I thought about bumping the movie down to 3.5/5 stars. I ultimately didn't and felt that the movie was worthy of 4/5 stars, but the movie definitely loses some of its charm upon re-watch.

I think the biggest thing is that the film is placed upon witty dialogue (mainly from Byrne) and a couple of plot-twists. Once you know and can remember the dialogue and twists, which are pretty simple in the first place, the film doesn't seem as good.

I still really like it and regard it as one of the finer gangster films ever made (that I've seen), but certainly not a 4.5/5 star film. Solid 4/5 stars sounds right to me.

My father enjoyed the movie, particularly Jon Polito's performance (whose performance I also loved). RIP Mr. Polito

I never saw SOA, and hadn't heard of the guy until you mentioned him now. Sicario was good (3.5/5 stars), but HOHW was clearly superior to me.

Wind River is the new film with Jeremy Renner, right? I'm not the hugest fan of Mr. Renner, but it got great reviews IIRC, and if it has this screenwriter, thus I shall check it out when it becomes available for rent on Amazon.

I liked Wind River a lot. Renner and the normal Olsen sister were both great. This was his directorial debut.

I probably liked Hell or High Water a little more but Wind River is a great setting too. Pine was originally cast in Renner role but has to drop out.

I'm with you on Sicario. It was very good, but also overrated. My least favorite of the 3.

Sicario was not overrated. Awesome editing and use of rising tension.
