Looking like a top 3 class in 2019 but again this is all the way in 2019. A lot of 5 star guys could turn into mac-level players in the next two years for all we know.

Yeah -- who knows where these guys end up. That being said -- UM has a chance for one of their best classes ever in 2019. It is one of those years where the state of Michigan has some elite talent -- Devontae Dobbs is a 5 star OL, Logan Brown is a top 50 recruit at OL and Julian Barnett is a top 100 recruit.

Rare to see the state with 3 top 100 recruits nationally. The strangest part -- Dobbs has said UM hasn't recruited him very much? Belleville is literally a pitching wedge from ANn Arbor. Not sure why that is?

They're already admitting defeat on this one. He's all OSU. Went to two games last year, Friday Night Lights the last two years, had several unofficial visits, and plans to get to at least the Oklahoma game, if not more, in Columbus. He's also got a very close relationship with Kerry Coombs and Mike Weber.

The recruitment is far from over. OSU is not totally in the lead either as PSU and MSU is right there. I know Belleville. The main reason Michigan is behind is because they didn't recruit his teammate. His coach wants him to go to MSU or U of M.

One thing I know about is high school recruits in the Metro Detroit area. While Dobbs may have a casual relationship with Weber -- calling it a close relationship, I find it hard to believe. Belleville and Cass Tech are polar opposite high schools. CT has been a powerhouse for years and is located in Detroit. Belleville has had a handful of solid players, but a new coaching staff a few years ago brought a rash of transfers from top talent to the school.

As far as all OSU -- I wouldn't get too excited. He goes to school literally 15 minutes from Ann Arbor. He has made public statements saying he wants UM to recruit him harder and isn't sure why they haven't been.

One thing UM has going for them, if they want him -- his new coach came from Cass Tech, which is a big pipeline to UM as Cass Tech's coach played at UM. With the coaching staff set at UM now, if they want a player from that area -- 95 times out of 100 they will get them.

I do wonder if UM's staff sees something they don't like about Dobbs? And that is why they haven't put a lot of emphasis on him.

I'm just going off a quote from him saying he's close with Weber and Josh Alabi, another Detroit kid on OSU. I haven't seen him say he wants them to recruit him harder, just that they haven't.

I also wouldn't say him being from Cass Tech is a slam dunk for michigan - see Damon Webb, Josh Alabi, Mike Weber. There's also another safety from Cass in 2019 calling Ohio State his "dream school".

All I know is what I've read, and this kid has shown a ton of love for OSU, more than most recruits at this point in the 2019 cycle, and he has already forged close relationships with several folks at OSU, per his own words.

Agreed, but man it's fun to think about how good it could be.

Damon Webb is the only recruit UM really wanted and didn't get from Cass Tech. Weber was committed to UM and if not for a coaching change, would be at UM. Alabi was a low 3 star recruit, so he was highly sought after.

I wouldn't put much thought into recruits this early for 2019 though. Still a ways to go for 2018's class.

That being said -- Cass Tech's coach is Thomas Wilcher. He played college ball at Michigan, so no matter what you read, UM has a built in advantage from the jump. Any player located centrally to a major P5 program, especially a blue blood program is going to have a huge built in advantage on those players. That is why it is huge to live in a talent rich state.

With Dobbs -- I'm not going to say he is definitely going to UM, but if UM really wants him, they will get him. I'd say the same thing if a recruit lived centrally to Columbus -- if OSU wants him, they will get him.

Alabi's first offer was michigan and they were all over him. Then OSU offered him and he switched pretty quickly. He was also a high-3* guy.

UM does have an advantage with Wilcher, but I'd say it's foolish to say he's michigan's if he wants them, especially with the relationships he now has at OSU. If you guys think you can come in late and try and get him, I'd probably not count him in your numbers. You're not dealing with MSU or PSU here. Cass guys have come here and been successful.

Alabi was the 9th ranked player in the state of Michigan and 560th ranked player nationally -- he wasn't a high 3 star.

Little guy just woke up. Will respond about Dobbs later

The highest ranked 3* that year was ranked 337th and the lowest was 2,116th. He was 553rd. That would constitute a high 3*.

I won't even start seriously following 2019 recruiting until the 2018 cycle is completely over.

So many kids who commit this early end up not ending up where they originally committed (and often end up committed to multiple schools before making a concrete decision)

Agree to disagree. IMO, the guys considered high 3 star recruits are those that just missed out on being a 4 star -- if there are 200+ guys ahead of you, that isn't the case.

It is only an opinion anyways. That being said Alabi was in the same year as Weber, when any player from the state of Michigan was open game. UM was terrible for the 3rd straight year, the coaching staff was in the headlines daily talking about firing them and then they were fired.

With Dobbs -- he doesn't play for Cass Tech. He is at Belleville. His HC at Belleville came from Cass Tech (used to be there D.C.). Like Wilcher, he has every in at Michigan and is only 15 miles from Ann Arbor.

Have a feeling UM isn't as high on Dobbs as others. He was interviewed August 4th in an article in the paper and Dobbs said UM coaches still don't contact much and he isn't sure why. Guess we shall see. He isn't someone I've had a chance to watch play, but he is 10-15 minutes from me, so I may have to take a look.

UM has quite a few really good 2019 recruits. Logan Brown is another one and a DL Mazi (something or another). All 3 are top 100 recruits. We don't get that very often here.

Well, think about it. If Harbaugh loses again to OSU this year, as it would appear he's headed for, why would a recruit choose him over Urban?
